Abstract

Community participation is essential in developing tourism villages because the potential of social and cultural diversity resources in the community is the primary driving force behind the activities in the tourism village. This research aims to analyze the stages and obstacles of community participation in the development of Warloka Pesisir Tourism Village. This research uses qualitative research with descriptive research type. Data were gathered using observation, interviews, focus group discussion impacts (FGDs), and documentation. The concept used to analyze the data is the concept of participation from Cohen and Uphoff. The results showed that based on the four types of participation, the Warloka Pesisir community has not yet reached an optimal level of participation in developing a tourism village. Participation in decision-making and benefit-taking shows that the community is passive in decision-making and tends only to follow the final decision. This has an impact on the community's lack of maximum benefits from the development of tourist villages. Some existing obstacles hinder participation and tourism development, so more attention must be paid to supporting community participation by updating infrastructure and developing skills with empowerment.

Abstract

Copper and brass crafts in Tumang Village, Cepogo District, Boyolali Regency, remain the mainstay of the community's economy. Unlike many other traditional craft centers that have declined due to their inability to adapt, Tumang has continued to develop and become known as the largest metal craft center in Indonesia. This study explains the survival strategies of the copper and brass craft industry in Tumang Village. The main problems faced by craftsmen are global competition, limited workforce regeneration, and the need to adapt to developments in digital technology. This study was conducted in July–August 2025 using qualitative methods, namely a research approach that focuses on an in-depth understanding of social phenomena from the perspective of the research subjects. Research subjects included entrepreneurs, employee craftsmen, community leaders, and village government officials who have a direct relationship with the sustainability of the Tumang craft industry. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The research findings indicate that survival strategies in Tumang include product design innovation, maintaining handmade quality, modernizing digital-based marketing systems, dividing roles between entrepreneurs and employees, integrating with the tourism sector, and regenerating the workforce through internships, educational collaborations, and extracurricular activities. These findings demonstrate that the survival of Tumang crafts relies not solely on past cultural heritage but also on the ability to adapt to social, economic, and technological changes. The implications of this research contribute to strengthening the literature on sustainability strategies for the traditional crafts industry in Indonesia while also offering practical perspectives for developing regional policies and empowering communities based on local wisdom. Keywords: Survival Strategy, Industrial Sustainability, Copper and Brass Crafts, Tumang Village, Creative Economy

Abstract

Troso weaving is a local Indonesian cultural heritage with high aesthetic and historical value and is an integral part of the social, cultural, and economic life of the people of Troso Village. However, this tradition faces challenges in the form of a crisis of artisan regeneration. The purpose of the study is to explain the factors that cause the low interest of the community in becoming Troso weaving craftsmen and the impact that occurs. The research method used is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subject of this research is Troso weaving artisans. The researcher used the rational choice theory by James S. Coleman to analyze the problems in this study. The results of the study show that the factors that cause this regeneration crisis are the emergence of other job alternatives, changes in the mindset of the younger generation, lack of family support, and the need for high skills. The impact of this crisis includes a decrease in the number of skilled workers and the threat of extinction of the Troso weaving tradition. Utilizing the findings in this study, a strategy is needed to create a balance between preserving traditions and meeting the needs of the economy and the development of the times.
