Abstract

Energy use plays an important role in human survival and activities, but the issue of conventional (non-renewable) energy crisis is often a topic of discussion. Some scientists predict that this energy will run out in the near future. The amount of energy is increasing along with the growth in the number of infrastructure and buildings to support the development of the human population. Applying the green building concept to buildings is one way to achieve energy efficiency. This research aims to analyze and optimize the application of green building concept in terms of energy efficiency in Building III, Faculty of Engineering, UPN "Veteran" East Java. The analysis was carried out on aspects of lighting, air conditioning, energy savings modeling using EDGE 3.0.0 software, as well as calculating the intensity of energy consumption. Based on the analysis, the building known that has an energy consumption intensity value of 24.92 kWh/m²/month and has made energy savings through the use of energy-saving lighting and air conditioning, with savings of 18.09% compared to similar buildings.

Abstract

Canteen wastewater is a type of domestic effluent generated from cooking and dishwashing activities, typically containing high levels of organic matter such as fats, oils, food residues, and key pollutants like Total Suspended Solids (TSS) also Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). This study evaluates the effectiveness of sweet orange peel (Citrus sinensis)-based bio-coagulant in removing TSS also COD from canteen wastewater. Orange peel was selected due to its bioactive compounds like a pectin, flavonoids, also organic acids, that contain hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups vital for coagulation-flocculation processes. Treatment was conducted using the jar test method with variations in pH, dosage, and settling time. The results showed that the optimum condition was achieved at pH 3, a dosage of 2 g/L, also a settling time of 45 minutes, resulting in TSS removal efficiency of 30.48% and COD removal of 29.29%. These findings confirm the potential of orange peel as an eco-friendly natural coagulant for canteen wastewater treatment.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the potential of the aquatic plant Salvinia molesta in absorbing heavy metal nickel (Ni) from wastewater through phytoremediation. The process was assessed using Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) and Translocation Factor (TF) parameters. The experimental method was conducted by applying variations in leaf density and surface coverage of the plant in reactors containing nickel solution. Results showed that Salvinia molesta reduced Ni concentration by up to 85.50%, with the highest metal accumulation found in the roots. The maximum BCF value reached 1.68, and the TF was 0.905, indicating that the plant effectively absorbed Ni from water into roots, but only partially translocated it to the upper parts. Therefore, Salvinia molesta demonstrates potential as a phytoremediator for Ni-contaminated water, with root accumulation being the dominant mechanism.

Abstract

Biogas is a potential renewable energy source, but the content of impurity gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) reduces its quality and efficiency as a fuel. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the adsorption method using a combination of coconut shell activated carbon and natural zeolite in increasing methane (CH4) levels in biogas. The biogas used was produced from a cattle farm in Carangwulung Village. The variables tested included variations in the composition of activated carbon (C) and zeolite (Z) adsorbents with biogas flow rates (0.2; 0.4; and 0.6 L/min). The test was carried out with an adsorbent mass of 300 grams activated by KOH and the resulting pressure ranged from 9–13 mbar. The results showed that the adsorbent composition of 50C:50Z with a flow rate of 0.2 L/min gave the best performance. Under these conditions, CH4 levels could increase from 45% to 87%, where there was an increase in methane by 48%. The adsorption process at low flow rates provides optimal contact time between gas and adsorbent, thus increasing the efficiency of increasing CH4 levels. Thus, the combination of coconut shell activated carbon and natural zeolite at low flow rates is effective in improving biogas quality through the adsorption process.

Abstract

The rising trend of working from anywhere has increased activity in cafeterias, which produce wastewater with high levels of organic matter and suspended solids. If discharged without treatment, this wastewater can pollute the environment and disrupt ecosystem balance. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of plant quantity and retention time in a constructed wetland system of the sub-surface flow type, using the emergent macrophyte wetland method with amazon sword plant (Echinodorus palaefolius) plants to reduce Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in cafeteria wastewater. Variations in plant quantity (12, 14, and 16 stems) were tested over a 16-day retention period. The results showed BOD removal efficiency ranging from 94.62% to 97.85%, while TSS reduction ranged from 73.3% to 97.8%, depending on the sampling time. In the best-case scenario (on day 4), the system reduced BOD from 185.9 mg/L to 6 mg/L and TSS from 150 mg/L to 3 mg/L, meeting the effluent quality standards for restaurant wastewater. This high efficiency is attributed to physical filtration through roots and substrate, as well as rhizospheric microbial activity supported by the roots of the Amazon sword plant (Echinodorus palaefolius).

Abstract

Wastewater generated from poultry slaughterhouses generally contains high levels of organic matter and ammonia, which can contaminate aquatic environments if not properly treated. The high organic content contributes to elevated COD levels, while ammonia can be toxic to aquatic organisms. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a biofilter system with intermittent aeration (anoxic–oxic combination) using tree fern board and bioring media in reducing COD and NH₃-N concentrations. The tested aeration durations included 3 hours (1 hour anoxic, 2 hours oxic), 6 hours (2 hours anoxic, 4 hours oxic), 9 hours (3 hours anoxic, 6 hours oxic), and 12 hours (4 hours anoxic, 8 hours oxic). The experimental results showed that the bioring medium exhibited better performance than the tree fern board, with the optimum condition achieved at a 12-hour hydraulic retention time, resulting in COD and NH₃-N reductions of 93.41% and 88.21%, respectively. Overall, the findings indicate that a bioring-based biofilter with intermittent aeration has strong potential as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative technology for treating poultry slaughterhouse wastewater.
