Abstract

Petani perempuan usia subur berisiko mengalami penurunan aktivitas kolinesterase akibat pajanan pestisida. Fertile women farmers are risky of suffering decrease of cholinesterase activity due to pesticide exposure. This study aimed to analyze relation between pesticide exposure and the exposure agent to cholinesterase activity of fertile women workers at Kedunguter Village. This study used cross-sectional design on 94 fertile women farmers in 2015. Data was collected by observation, interview and cholinesterase test. Data analysis used chi-square test and analysis results showed a significant relation between pesticide types, working time, the use of gloves, hand-washing behavior to cholinesterase activity of fertile women farmers. Analysis results of this study showed that variable working time had the highest odds ratio (OR) score (OR = 14.072), so the variable working time is the most dominant variable in influencing cholinesterase enzyme. This study suggests that fertile women farmers should work not more than six hours per day.

Abstract

Abstract

Medical waste is one of the major public health concerns due to its potential direct impact on human health. One of the key factors contributing to the increased risk of disease transmission from medical waste is improper waste management, including the handling of sharp objects, infectious waste, and emissions from incineration processes that produce hazardous compounds. Studies have shown that exposure to medical waste can lead to infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, as well as toxic effects caused by heavy metals and dioxin emissions from incinerators. This systematic review aims to examine the impact of medical waste exposure on human health based on studies published between 2016 and 2025. The research employed the Systematic Review method following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles were identified through databases including PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and SAGE Journals. A total of ten studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed in depth. The findings indicate that exposure to medical waste contributes to an increased risk of infectious diseases, Needlestick and Sharp Injuries (NSSI), respiratory disorders, and toxic effects on vital organs. Moreover, hazardous chemical compounds such as heavy metals, dioxins, furans, and volatile organic compounds (BTEX) were found to exert carcinogenic and cytotoxic effects on humans. Therefore, safe and sustainable medical waste management is essential to prevent long-term health impacts among healthcare workers, waste handlers, and communities living near healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Background and purpose: In Indonesia, food waste is an urgent problem, especially in the informal food sector, such as Warung Tegal or food stall, which has received insufficient attention in waste-reduction initiatives. Despite its high prevalence, research on food waste behavior in this sector remains limited, creating a gap in understanding of how managers, employees, and consumers influence waste generation. This study aims to explore behavior of managers, employees and consumers of Warung Tegal. Methods: This study uses a qualitative phenomenological design with thematic analysis, based on in-depth interviews and field observations with 12 informants, including managers, employees, consumers from three Warung Tegal outlets, as well as environmental activists (FoodCycle Indonesia), the South Jakarta Environment Agency, and A Garbage Collector. Results: The findings suggest that food waste may be influenced by a variety of behavioral factors. It was observed that one in three Warung Tegal had implemented waste sorting, though government support for food waste management was considered inadequate. In addition, awareness programs regarding food waste management have yet to be directed towards Warung Tegal business owners and waste management officers, who play a crucial role in this cycle. Conclusion: Behavioral analysis of the informants indicates that food waste is influenced by various factors, including community access to waste management facilities and support initiatives tailored to the Warung Tegal sector. These findings highlight that Warung Tegal business operators could benefit significantly from support from the government and environmental organizations to raise awareness about the risks of food waste and mitigate this critical issue.
