Abstract

This article discusses how the role of the scholars of the descendants of Hadrami or known as Habib performs the activities of popular Islamic Preaching (henceforth: da’wah) in the urban community. This paper specifically analyzes the activities of da’wah of Majelis Salawat Ahbabul Mustafa led by Habib Syech, a Habib, a descendant of the Prophet who lived in Solo, Central Java. Recently, a similar da’wah was made by young Habib to gain popularity among the youth in several major cities in Indonesia. By using the media of tambourine instrumental music in reading the Shalawat, the da’wah of Habib Syech successfully attracts the interest of many participants who mostly came from groups of young people. In the middle of the hard blasphemies of the Salafi Preacher (Dai) against the majority of the religious practices of Indonesian Muslims, the Majelis Salawat led by Habib Shaykh conducted the ‘counter attack’ by means of-ways and elegant manners. This group also performs the da’wah through a cultural approach as Walisongo did by using Javanese idioms to get closer to the objects of da'wah which are mostly located in Java. Keywords: Habib, Majelis Salawat, Da’wah, Youth.

Abstract

This article attempts to analyze how Indonesian Muslim scholars, such as Kiai Hasyim Muzadiwith his Nahdlatul Ulama background, not only profoundly understand the term of Moderate Islam but also implement this term within the Indonesian context. Data were obtained from interviews with Kiai Hasyims friends, family and documents on his unpublished textual speeches, notes, and comments on media. This study showed that moderate Islam is a term that has different meanings and has raised an intense debate among Muslim scholars. For instance, some Muslim scholars and activists in the United States even try to avoid using this term, and some use it with high caution. Unlike their colleagues in other countries, Indonesian scholars use this term as an icon of their activism and to label their respected organizations appropriated with this term. Using the Quranic term of Islam Rahmatan lil Alamin, Kiai Hasyim Muzadi introduces and promotes the moderate Islamic teachings to Indonesian Muslim and global societies. He believes that the core of Islamic teaching is in its moderate teachings and values. He argues that only with this moderate values and teaching, Islam will respond to the contextual problem faced by Muslims in the World.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the form of religious fundamentalism displayed through Tablighi Jama'ah’s da’wah movement in Madura and uncovers the rationale for Madura’s community's acceptance of this da’wah movement group. This paper is qualitative research using a case study approach. Data collection was carried out through interviews with some main figures and followers of the group, a series of observations, and documentation of the da’wah activities undergone by the group. The result shows that the Tablighi Jama'ah’s da’wah movement in Madura can be categorized as a puritanical Islamic fundamentalist movement, particularly because it intends to purify faith, sharia, and morals. In contrast to the beliefs of other religious groups, this group prohibits an active and massive use of technology because it is perceived as a direct obstacle to da’wah and is considered full of immorality. This group emphasizes the so-called sunnah appearance, such as using robes, turbans, siwak, cingkrang trousers, and not being engaged in practical politics. Moreover, they also emphasize congregational prayers and the necessity of living a simple life. This paper also signifies that the Madura community accepts the Tablighi Jama'ah because their religious practices are congruently aligned with the teachings of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah. In addition, the acceptance of the Madura community is due to their obedience toward the Kiai, who have previously accepted the Tablighi Jama'ah da’wah activities in Madura.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of Pancasila and primordial deradicalization as a socio-legal nexus for Islamic and socio-anthropological practices in Indonesia and Afghanistan, focusing on fostering a plural society. Pancasila, the philosophical foundation of the Indonesian state, has accommodated religious and cultural diversity, including legal plurality. The article explores how the principles of Pancasila can contribute to the deradicalization of extreme primordial affiliation (such as sharia) by addressing the underlying socio-anthropological factors that contribute to extremism in both countries. The study employs a comparative analysis approach, drawing on qualitative data from various sources, including academic literature. It highlights the similarities and differences in the socio-anthropological contexts of Indonesia and Afghanistan, particularly about the dynamics of Islamic values, laws, and their impact on society. By examining the role of Pancasila and its potential applicability in Afghanistan, the article aims to contribute to developing effective primordial deradicalization strategies in both countries. The findings suggest that Pancasila's emphasis on inclusivity, tolerance, and mutual respect can provide a framework for addressing the socio-anthropological factors contributing to a socio-legal nexus. The article argues that by incorporating the principles of Pancasila into deradicalization efforts, policymakers and practitioners can work towards creating a more pluralistic and cohesive society. It also explores the challenges and opportunities of implementing such an approach, considering the unique contexts of Indonesia and Afghanistan.

Abstract

Identifying the commencement of Ramadan in Indonesia encompasses religious and socio-cultural dimensions, illustrating the intricate interplay between Islamic doctrine and local traditions. This study adopts a qualitative methodology and field research techniques to explore harmonizing these elements in establishing the onset of Ramadan in Maluku. Findings indicate that the Maluku community perceives local customs as an essential aspect that should be integrated into all religious rituals and practices, including the early declaration of Ramadan. The method employed annually to determine Ramadan's beginning is regarded as a legitimate cultural heritage with authenticity and alignment with Islamic principles. In Maluku, religious symbols and traditional practices in observing the new moon via natural indicators are frequently utilized concurrently to ascertain the start of Ramadan. This interplay fosters a symbolic dynamic that merges scientific methodologies with traditional practices, influenced by the roles of national religious bodies and local indigenous communities.

Abstract

Abstract The issue of climate change is one of the global challenges that significantly impact human life, ranging from natural disasters to changes in social and economic life patterns. In climate change, scientific-based approaches are often the main focus, but religious-based approaches also have an important role. This study uses a qualitative method to analyze the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), one of Indonesia's largest Islamic-based civil society organizations, in dealing with climate change. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and study of relevant documents. The results show that NU not only puts forward a theology-based approach to understanding its people but also plays an active role in various concrete programs to support environmental conservation efforts. NU utilizes its extensive organizational network to spread information about the importance of protecting the environment as part of religious obligations. This research supports Robert W. Hefner's findings that civil Islam in Indonesia plays an important role in promoting democratization and strengthening the role of civil society in dealing with various contemporary issues, in this case, environmental issues and climate change. NU's contribution to this issue also aligns with Jens Koershen's research, which highlights how community organizations can be an extension of the government in helping communities adapt to climate change.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the practice of whirling dance within the Naqshbandiyya Haqqani Rabbani Order in Indonesia, explore the underlying understanding of its practitioners, and uncover the spiritual experiences associated with this ritual. The central focus is to examine the role of whirling as a form of dynamic dhikr and spiritual transformation within the context of contemporary Sufi practices. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with whirling dancers affiliated with the Naqshbandiyya Haqqani Rabbani community. The analysis focused on the dancers' subjective experiences and spiritual reflections during the practice. The findings reveal three main points. First, the whirling dance in the Naqshbandiyya Haqqani context is not merely an artistic expression but a structured, symbolic ritual of dhikr, representing the cosmic movement toward unity with the Divine. Second, the dancers possess a deep Sufi understanding of the dance, interpreting it as a manifestation of fana (self-annihilation) and ego transcendence. Third, the spiritual experience during whirling touches on core elements of Sufi psychology—qalb (heart), nafs (soul), and ruh (spirit)—resulting in observable changes in behavior, inner tranquility, and enhanced daily dhikr quality. Theoretically, these findings contribute to the discourse of contemporary Sufism, particularly concerning the role of embodied expressions in dhikr rituals and the relevance of embodied spirituality approaches in the study of Islamic mysticism. The whirling dance exemplifies the integration of bodily movement and spiritual consciousness along the Sufi path.
