Abstract

The Aripan Village in X Koto Singkarak District, Solok Regency is suboptimal soil characterized by a dominant clay texture, high bulk density, low porosity, and inadequate organic matter content. This condition is exacerbated by community cultivation practices that still rely on chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, potentially reducing soil quality, suppressing soil biological activity, and increasing the risk of environmental pollution. This activity aims to enhance farmers' knowledge and skills regarding the benefits and techniques for applying organic fertilizers and botanical pesticides as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional inputs. The methods used include material delivery, interactive discussions, and hands-on practice in making compost from organic waste. In addition, participants were introduced to various local plants such as papaya leaves, paitan, and babadotan, which have potential as botanical pesticide ingredients. The results showed a significant increase in community understanding regarding the function of organic fertilizers, the negative impacts of long-term chemical fertilizer use, and the importance of botanical pesticides in safer pest control. Participants were able to make compost with the right composition and understand how to apply botanical pesticides. Overall, this activity succeeded in raising awareness and encouraging the adoption of organic technology towards a healthier, more sustainable agricultural system that is in line with the local potential of Aripan Village.

Abstract

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a soil-borne pathogen causing Fusarium wilt in banana and is widely distributed in Indonesia. Biological control using antagonistic fungi is a promising strategy for managing this disease. This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous root-associated fungi in controlling Fusarium wilt in banana cv. Barangan Merah. The indigenous fungal isolates and Foc were obtained from the isolate collection of the Research Center for Horticulture, BRIN, Indonesia. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design comprising six treatments (Control, Fusarium sp. 1, Fusarium sp. 2, Fusarium sp. 3, Trichoderma sp., unidentified fungus), four replicates, and five plants per replicate. Two-month-old banana plantlets derived from tissue culture were treated by placing 15 mL of fungal propagules per plant in the soil around the roots. The study showed that the application of Fusarium sp. 2 delayed the incubation period of Fusarium wilt in banana cv. Barangan Merah to 47.33 days, compared with 30.44 days in the untreated control. Fusarium sp. 2 resulted in the lowest disease intensity (33.65%). The application of indigenous fungi did not significantly affect plant height, stem circumference, or leaf number under the experimental conditions. Fusarium sp. 2 is a promising indigenous biocontrol candidate against Fusarium wilt in banana; however, further molecular identification, pathogenicity, safety confirmation, inoculum standardization, and field validation are required before practical recommendation.

Abstract

Fusarium wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a major constraint in banana cultivation, and its development in the field is frequently associated with improper nitrogen fertilization. However, information on how different nitrogen fertilizer rates influence Fusarium wilt severity remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying nitrogen doses on Fusarium wilt and growth of banana. The experiment was conducted under laboratory and field conditions at the Horticulture Research Center of BRIN, Solok, Indonesia, using a randomized block design with nine treatments and four replications. The treatments were nitrogen with different rates (control, 100, 250, 400, and 550 kg ha⁻¹ year⁻¹), applied with and without Foc inoculation. The results demonstrated that nitrogen fertilization enhanced vegetative growth of banana plants under pathogen-free conditions. However, in Foc-infected plants, increasing nitrogen rates—particularly at high levels—exacerbated disease development. High nitrogen rates (400–550 kg ha⁻¹ year⁻¹) accelerated symptom appearance, indicated by shorter incubation periods, and increased disease severity. In contrast, a moderate nitrogen rate (250 kg ha⁻¹ year⁻¹) delayed symptom development and reduced disease severity, although it did not prevent infection. These findings suggest that excessive nitrogen fertilization increases Fusarium wilt severity, while moderate nitrogen application may help suppress disease progression. Therefore, nitrogen management in Fusarium wilt–endemic banana production areas should prioritize moderate nitrogen rates and avoid excessive fertilization as part of an integrated and sustainable disease management strategy.
