Abstract

The study employed a descriptive methodology with a cultural perspective, with a key focus on dissecting the novel Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia by Jean Sasson published in 1993 to explore the impact of popular culture on the identity of Saudi women, focusing on the princesses within the royal palace. The cultural environment of Saudi Arabia presents a complex scenario for women as they reconcile traditional Islamic values with pervasive Westernized influences. This inquiry scrutinized how popular culture, introduced through migration and media exposure, molded Saudi womens attitudes and actions, particularly those of the royal lineage. This novel is the source of data for the research. The analysis focused on themes, representations, and cultural significance. It examined language, imagery, and narratives to uncover meanings and relate them to broader societal issues, ultimately revealing how popular culture reflects or challenges prevailing ideologies. The findings revealed Sultanas struggle to balance her Saudi princess identity with Western influences, revealing the complexities of cultural exchange, marriage practices, and societal expectations in both Western and Islamic contexts. Sassons narrative highlights how global influences, particularly Western culture, shape perceptions and interactions, enriching yet complicating societal norms. Vivid depictions of gender roles, sensory experiences, and emotional responses underline the ongoing struggles women face in patriarchal societies. These stories provide an understanding of the intersections of culture, gender, and identity, reflecting personal journeys while echoing broader themes of empowerment, resistance, and evolving cultural identities in a globalized world.

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: 1. To assess how the ZIELTS application affects candidates' performance in the IELTS listening section; 2. To identify key features of the ZIELTS application that enhance listening skills; 3. To evaluate candidates' perceptions of the ZIELTS application's effectiveness.Methodology: A mixed-methods design was adopted combining quantitative performance measurement and qualitative feedback analysis. Ten participants were randomly selected and assessed using pre- and post-tests to evaluate listening competence. Participants practiced listening using the ZIELTS application for two weeks and recorded the frequency of use and topic preferences in logbooks. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test in SPSS, while qualitative data from logbooks and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were examined through thematic analysis.Main Findings: The outcome revealed a modest but not statistically significant improvement in listening skills: the mean band score increased from 6.75 to 6.90, t(9) = 0.896, p = 0.394. While there was some variation in the progress of individual participants, users were satisfied with the user-friendly design of the application, the wide range of topics, and additional features like vocabulary lists and audio transcripts. Minor technical issues (e.g., inconsistencies between audio and text) were identified as opportunities for future enhancements.Novelty/Originality of This Study: This study is one of the earliest empirical explorations of ZIELTS, a purpose-built, exam-aligned AI application launched in March 2024, as a means of improving IELTS listening performance. Using a mixed-methods approach that integrates quantitative pre- and post-test assessments with qualitative learner feedback, it contributes original, context-specific evidence to the relatively under-researched intersection of AI-assisted language learning and IELTS listening preparation.

The opportunity to analyze the novel from the viewpoint of the readers is presented by the positives and drawbacks noted by readers on social media. Fish’s theory of reader-response analysis in an interpretive community is then applied in this research. The participants of this study were six readers that are actively joined a book discussion over social media. In conducting this study, qualitative research design with research instruments in the form of Google Form questionnaire were employed. The result of this study shows that, generally, the readers expect an emotional and sad story from the novel and their expectations of the plot is fulfilled by the author.
