Abstract

Indonesia's development cannot be separated from the development of its society. People need to get services from other parties with the aim of improving their quality of life. According to the Tridharma, a lecturer as an educator at a university, one of his duties is to serve the community. The Teaching Campus Program (KM) is a program issued by the Indonesian government which aims to provide opportunities for all students to learn and develop themselves through activities outside their respective campuses. The purpose of the service of the field supervisor (DPL) in the Teaching Campus is to help students from the beginning to the end of their assignment at the school where the students are placed by the central committee implementing the Teaching Campus program. A DPL receives an assignment from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. DPLs are of course responsible for guiding students in each program that students will carry out at the target school so that the objectives of the campus teaching program, one of which is to increase literacy and numeracy at the target school, are realized. This educational service uses a mentoring method for students who are placed in the program's target schools. Another form of service is DPL coordinating with various parties to support the smooth running of student tasks. From the results of implementing PkM, DPL mentoring services provide several benefits for lecturers' careers in relation to their tridharma duties. The author groups these benefits into three general categories, namely benefits in the fields of education, research and community service. According to field supervisors, campus teaching programs provide significant benefits, namely increasing students' hard skills and soft skills. In terms of hard skills, students can immediately implement the knowledge they are learning on campus in the world of work. In the field of soft skills, students gain knowledge on how to solve problems, collaborate, and be responsible for the work they do in the real world of work. The author draws the conclusion that there are many benefits obtained by field supervisor lecturers (DPL) from their participation in the Teaching Campus program. The benefit felt most by DPLs is that this activity supports their duties in fulfilling the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, especially in the field of community service.

Abstract

Before the COVID-19 pandemic which broke out in early 2020, most of the classes in many universities in Indonesia were conducted offline (traditional classes). After the outbreak of COVID-19, most institutions had to do online teaching-learning due to government policies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Both students and educators realized that online learning was effective for them to fulfill the learning outcomes. In early 2023, many institutions in many countries started to conduct face-to-face classes again due to the decrease of the coronavirus spread. This research aims to find out the perspective of the students in the Translation class in both online and offline classes, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers want to find out the solutions that both the students and the lecturers suggest for a better method of conducting a Translation course. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method. The data are taken from the interview session and the questionnaires. The respondents are the students and lecturers of Translation courses at Universitas Kristen Indonesia and Universitas Gunadarma. This research found that the online teaching and learning process is effective for students and educators.

Abstract

Some transmigrant students in their interactions with others have desires to get to know other local languages for various reasons including the student's desire to get to know people who speak the local language more intimately. This study aims to find out the motivations or factors that cause transmigrant students to learn other local languages and what obstacles they face when learning these other local languages. The benefits of this research are to find out the factors the students have and the problems the students encounter in learning local languages as a part of language maintenance. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The selection of respondents was carried out using the snow bowling technique. There were 50 respondents (transmigrant students) who were living in the dormitory of Universitas Kristen Indonesia, Jakarta. The researcher collected data using questionnaires. The researcher used thematic analysis to analyze the data. This research reveals that there are four main reasons for the students to learn the local language, namely a) because they want to increase their knowledge and skills in the local languages; b) because they want to understand the language and culture of friends from other tribes; c) because they like the local languages (the accent, expression, and intonation); and d) because they want to get closer with fellow students who use the local languages. This study found that there were two types of general barriers that transmigrant students experienced when learning local languages, namely external and internal barriers. This research finds that transmigrant students who live in UKI’s dormitory can be ambassadors of various Indonesian local language maintenance.

Abstract

The recent Covid-19 pandemic has forced universities to quickly adapt to conditions requiring the modernization of their learning systems through technology. Alongside these demands, universities must also maintain or enhance students' academic achievements. This presents significant challenges due to various internal and external problems faced by institutions. However, universities have taken numerous steps to maximize their potential and improve academic outcomes. To address these challenges effectively, universities must implement immediate solutions. A key approach is the development of adaptable learning models that can be applied both online and offline. This research focuses on developing an English language learning model. The study employs a Research and Development (RnD) design and will be conducted at the Indonesian Christian University. The objectives of this research are: a) to empirically identify the learning models students need; b) to empirically assess the feasibility of these models from the perspective of relevant experts; c) to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of the developed models; and d) to empirically analyze students' perceptions of the developed models. The expected outcome of this research is the production of fully developed learning models that are ready for implementation in universities.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of connotative words and phrases in the novel Raumanen and aims to translate them into their denotative equivalents. It further examines whether the translated (target) text retains the original meaning of the source text. Data were collected from the novel Raumanen, and the research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The steps included: (a) identifying connotative words and phrases in the source language, (b) re-translating them using denotative expressions, and (c) comparing the meanings between the original translator’s version and the researchers’ re-translation. The findings indicate that translating connotative expressions into denotative language often results in unnatural phrasing and ambiguous meaning in the target text.
