Abstract

Abstract

The transition era between the New Order Era to the Reformation Era in Indonesia in 1998 became one of the popular themes for Indonesian writers. One of the works entitled Tembok Pak Rambo inserted elements of historical facts that occurred in Indonesia. The representation of the obscurity of the new order in this short story cannot be read only with heuristic readings, therefore a theory is needed to explore more profound the significance of the story. This paper utilizes the intertextuality approach in dismantling the veiled meanings in the story. The results showed that the short story represents two Indonesian leaders in the era of the new order transition to the reform era. This representation appears when aligned with a book called The Long Way of Indonesia Towards Democracy written by B. J. Habibie. Moreover, the short story titled Tembok Pak Rambo is not just about the hegemony between the ruler to his subordinates, but how the Indonesian writers were trying to criticism on the government and the historical facts that happened in 1998.

Abstract

This study investigates the ways bottom-up learning, specifically discovery and project-based learning, in strengthening local wisdom and identities among the youths in Surabaya. The local identities of Surabaya are generally associated with being egalitarian, urban, and multicultural. Despite the strong association of Surabaya with the bravery of Surabaya youths in the 1945 war against the Allied troops (semangat arek Suroboyo), young people of Surabaya nowadays do not internalize the spirit strongly. Our preliminary observation suggests the fact, and this can be seen from their writings before joining the writing class that we conducted. In coordination with the Public Library of Surabaya (Municipal Library and Archive of Surabaya) and community-based libraries in Surabaya, this experimental research was conducted to gain insights on the extent to which discovery and project-based learning can stimulate junior high school students to be more aware of their locally rooted identities. The study shows that the application of the student-centered learning methods can contribute significantly to the internalization and representation of Surabaya identities reflected in the students’ writings.

Abstract

This study criticizes the concept of "Housefather" that has released since 2021, which reflects changes in the construction of hegemonic masculinity in contemporary society. The dominant masculinity stereotypes have formed the gender dichotomy and resulted in the perception that men must be superior to women. However, this monolithic concept fails to encompass the various manifestations of masculinity that exist within diverse cultural contexts. This stereotype, often explained through the role of men as authoritative "heads of the household" who support the family and abstain from household chores, ignores a more complex and diverse reality. Through analysis of the film Rumah Aya (2021), this study responds to the idea that masculinity values can contribute to gender justice. Unlike popular films that usually focus on the mother's character, this film highlights a father's perspective and changes traditional stereotypes of masculinity. The main character, Bari, represents a unique construction of masculinity, one that differs from prevalent Western models of masculinity. In Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis and Fluid Connell's concept of masculinity, this research shows a shift in the role of men from "head of the household" to "father of the household". These results point to a more flexible role for men, where they are no longer limited by their traditional role as breadwinners, but also participate in domestic and childcare tasks. This research, therefore, helps in expanding knowledge about variations in masculinity, particularly in local contexts, and breaking down the boundaries of rigid gender stereotypes. Keywords: Stereotype; masculinity; film; critical discourse analysis; gender roles.

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to reveal how Balinese female dancers have existed by dancing in each era depicted in three novels namely Ni Rawit Ceti Penjual Orang (1935) by A.A. Pandji Tisna, (2) Tarian Bumi (2000) by Oka Rusmini, and (3) Jejak Dedari (2016) by Erwin Arnada. Structural-narrative theory by A.J. Greimas and Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism approach was used to dissect the three novels. From the analysis, some differences describe the characteristics of Balinese female dancers in each era. In the novel Ni Rawit Ceti Penjual Orang as a marker of the postcolonial era, female dancers have not been able to reach their existence because of tradition dominated by men. In contrast, in Tarian Bumi and Jejak Dedari as a remark of the 2000s, Balinese female dancers can achieve their existence with the help and motivation of the surrounding community of figures. Thus, it shows the progress in the way of Balinese society towards the existence of Balinese female dancers from time to time.

Abstract

The problem of plastic waste in Indonesia has become an increasingly urgent issue to be addressed. One of the areas facing serious waste management challenges is Bendelan Village in Binakal District, Bondowoso Regency. The lack of waste processing facilities and community awareness are key factors exacerbating the situation. Through a community service program, efforts were made to introduce and utilize ecobricks as a solution for managing plastic waste. This program involved PKK cadres in the socialization and creation of ecobricks. The outcome of this program was the creation of 20 ecobrick bottles, reflecting active community participation in the Plastic Exchange movement. This initiative is expected to be sustainable and contribute positively to creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
