Abstract

The election of Qatar as the host of the 2022 World Cup is enough to seize theattentionof the international community, because this world-class event is notonly the most awaited momentum by football lovers around the world but alsohelp strengthen relations between countries. However, as if escaped from publicview, in fact there is a hidden crime behind the preparation of the event which can be categorized as a form of modern slavery. This was allegedly based on thekafala system, which is a recruitment system for migrant workers that tends to be exploitative and much to the detriment of workers' rights such as low wages orhigh working hours.Thecase was revealedonthebasisofAmnesty International's investigation as an internationalnon-governmental organization engaged inHuman Rights. Through these findings, making the Qatari government as the event facilitator who was considered negligent in fulfilling the protection of laborrights, especially migrant workers, carried out policy reforms and transformation of its labor laws. Thus, Amnesty International's advocacy in influencing the policies and attitudes of the Qatari government can be said to be successful, although not yet comprehensive. This study aims to explain how the influence of Amnesty International is related to changes in Qatar policy in response to modernslavery. To answer the problems and research objectives, this research uses the concept of advocacy, the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), NGOs, and modern slavery with qualitative methods and data collection techniques through literature studies. This research shows that the advocacy carried out by Amnesty International was able to have implications for changing the attitude of the Qatari government in responding to the issue of modern slavery in its country, namely through policy changes regarding migrant workers, which in turn contributed to a number of positive impacts on the standard of living of migrant workers in Qatar.

Abstract

Cyber space is increasingly playing an important role in the global world, affecting the pattern of relations between countries. The issue of non-traditional security threats is shifting towards the threat typology associated with cyber space. The concept of national security began to be complemented by a national cyber security strategy to support the security of its national interests. Where the country needs to ensure the security of cyber ecosystems to maintain national economic stability. The large flow data and information increasingly large and complex, and brings hidden costs in the form of cyber security threats. Cyber security concepts that are considered not responsive and resilient in dealing with and overcoming cyber attacks can occur at any time with patterns and types that continue to evolve. The concept of cyber security should begin to be developed into cyber security that has patterns of recovery, adaptation, and evolution so as to be able to answer the dynamics of challenges in international trade. Interrupted cyber systems in international sphere will potentially cause disruption of international relations because the threat of losses caused not only affects one country. The increasingly complex international law context and involving big data should be one of the top priorities for cyber resilience strategies. This paper starts by explaining the state of play of cyber resilience in international relations and law. Next, analysis why the concept of cyber resilience in the perspective of international relations and international law needs to be re-visited to face challenges in the digital economy.

Abstract

Violence against women is a form of discrimination against women and is regulated under the 1981 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Violence against women is a global issue. It also still occurs in developed countries such as Denmark. In fact, despite the remarkable achievements in the agenda of gender equality in the economic, political and social fields, the prevalence of violence that occurred in 2003 and 2014 was still high. As a binding instrument, CEDAW provides an obligation for the state to comply with and to implement concrete measures in the protection of women. Therefore, the author in this study sought to see how Denmark's compliance forms to fulfill its obligations in dealing with violence against women according to this Convention. This qualitative research uses compliance theory by paying attention to the dynamics and the challenges of handling  violence against women under the Convention. There are several findings in this study. First, although Denmark has implemented significant measures in dealing with violence against women, CEDAW has not been fully implemented by Denmark. Second, the increasing number of immigrants and the financial crisis have affected the success in protecting women. Third, the social and cultural conditions of the community have not completely changed. Therefore, Denmark can be categorized as a high compliance-low effectiveness country.

Abstract

Good relations between the United States and Canada can be said as one of the best relations between countries in the world, this is based on several factors such as similar cultural values, shared political interests, intimate diplomatic relations, and strong economic relationship. At first the border between the United States and Canada was a symbol of good and intimate relations between the two countries so that there was no security at all at the border between the two countries, but this has changed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This incident has changed the views of the public and policy makers towards terrorist attacks, this incident has changed national assumptions about terrorism, especially those related to domestic security. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, migration has become a topic that can be related to terrorism because terrorists can enter a country through immigration gates for residents of a country. The research was made through the collection of qualitative data, as well as through the concept of securitization. This research analyzes the forms of securitization carried out by the United States after the 9/11 incident. The results of this study are that there are many policy changes on the border between the United States of America and Canada after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, this is proven by the Smart Border Action Plan policy which was signed in December 2001 right after the terrorist attack occurred. signifies the urgency to secure the border between the two countries

Abstract

Along with the growing political fear of refugees in Western countries, on the other hand Canada resettled more refugees in 2018. Canada has been known as a country with humanist and solidarity identity. But most Canadians disagree with accepting refugees. Canada's refugee policy is often characterized by the face of Justin Trudeau as a leader, indicating the prime minister's personality plays an important role in determining Canadian policy. This study raises the issue that personality of Justin Trudeau is the reason Canada accepts refugees from Syria. This study uses an idiosyncratic approach that analyzes Trudeau's leadership style based on the leader's personality type according to Margaret Hermann. By using content analysis method, this research finds Trudeau has character; high belief to control events, low conceptual complexity, and low distrust of others. This study will show how Trudeau's character shapes the process and outcome of Canada's foreign policy towards Syrian refugees.

Abstract

The rise of China as one of the great powers in the international politic has been the hottest topic in the 21st century. Following the economic reform led by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China re-emerges stronger than ever with its influences covering major parts of the world. One region particularly stands out since the prior dominance of United States therein, the South Pacific. The study of this research will be limited to 10 PICs recognising China, Vanuatu, Cook Island, FSM, Fiji, Niuee, PNG, Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Kiribati. Under the Western International Relations Theory (IRT) however, the rise of China is always seen in a rather malign manner. This research, therefore, contends that in order to fully understand China’s behaviour in the international community, we need to know how China perceives itself. By applying one of the most famous Chinese traditional school of thought, Daoism, this research aims to examine the strategy used in the expansion of China’s influence in the South Pacific. Daoism is symbolised with yin and yang, where the two elements are contradictory, yet they complement each other. Under the Dao dialectics, this research argues that China has been utilising a combination of two contradictory elements of power—soft and hard power—in expanding its prominence in the South Pacific region.

Abstract

Empowerment of women and gender equality is still major concern. This issue is still difficult to overcome due to the lack of public awareness about the importance of this issue in Indonesia. Seeing this, Australia, which has a higher awareness of women, invites cooperation with Indonesia through the MAMPU (Maju Perempuan for Poverty Reduction) Program. The collaboration aims to provide women with access to essential services and proper rights. By using liberal feminist theory and the concept of bilateral cooperation, this study has the main argument that the running of the capable program (2012-2020) has been running according to these theories and concepts. The findings of this study are that MAMPU Program has fulfilled liberal feminist theory by making women psychologically aware that they have rights and opportunities which also resulted in several legal changes in Indonesia regarding women, with this Indonesia-Australia cooperation has also run according to the concept of cooperation. bilateral because the response from both countries to the MAMPU Program was very good.

Abstract

The development of 5G technology has become a new realm in the technological competition between the United States and China. This technology competition focuses on competing for dominance of global core technologies, which can provide economic benefits through standard setting, patents, and global supply chains. Huawei, a technology company from China, is said to have dominated 5G development based on the number of patents and company spending on research and development of this internet network. The United States as a first-mover country that for decades has led the development of global internet network technology, is facing challenges with Huawei's rapid development in the development of 5G technology. The escalation of competition has increased with the designation of Huawei as a threat to the United States by President Donald Trump. The Clean Network policy initiative was also later issued by the Trump administration to block Huawei's 5G network in America. This initiative was also used to lobby allied countries to join this policy. This raises questions about the factors driving the establishment of the Clean Network policy as a response to United States' concerns about the leadership of Chinese tech companies in 5G development. This research uses Neoclassical Realism theory to explain the factors causing the choice of the Clean Network policy as the United States' response to pressure from the leadership of Chinese companies. This theory will combine the analysis of international and domestic structures in understanding the behavior of the United States.
