Abstract

The capacity-building program for the Sinar Bahagia Farmers’ Group in Bebidas Village was implemented to strengthen farmers’ ability to diversify cocoa-based products through the application of green processing technologies. This community engagement initiative aimed to enhance postharvest efficiency, product quality, and economic value addition by utilizing environmentally friendly technologies such as solar dryers with photovoltaic panels, low-energy closed fermentation systems, and composting using EM4-enriched water. The methods employed included participatory training, technology demonstrations, production mentoring, and performance evaluation through measurements of cocoa bean quality, compost yield, and value-added analysis. The results indicated an increase in farmers’ knowledge from 54% to 88%, improved fermentation uniformity up to 85%, reduced drying time from 5–7 days to 2–3 days, and an increase in compost yield from 5.6% to 18.2%. Product diversification into organic cocoa powder, artisan chocolate, and pectin contributed to income growth of 18–72% for the group. Moreover, the program strengthened institutional capacity, enhanced women’s participation, and established a circular-economy-oriented farming model. In conclusion, the application of green processing effectively improved farmers’ capacities while expanding a sustainable cocoa value chain, and the program carries strong potential for replication in other cocoa-producing regions.

Abstract

Abstract: his community engagement program aims to introduce and implement a smart freshness label based on bromophenol blue and methyl red as a non-destructive indicator for predicting the ripeness level of Ambon Lumut bananas. This banana variety possesses a unique characteristic in which the peel remains green even at the ripe stage, leading consumers and traders to determine ripeness by pressing the fruit, a practice that may cause bruising and reduce product quality and market value. The activity was carried out through outreach sessions, technology demonstrations, and technical training involving 23 participants consisting of farmers and local banana traders. The program evaluation was conducted using questionnaires and direct observation of participants’ practices in applying the indicator labels. Field trials involving 80 prototype labels demonstrated that the technology is easy to apply during fruit storage and distribution processes. Evaluation results indicated that 92% of participants reported that the label helped determine the appropriate harvesting or selling time, 84% considered the label easy to use, and 56% expressed willingness to adopt the technology continuously. Overall, the program enhanced community understanding of freshness indicator technology and supported the adoption of non-destructive postharvest practices.

Abstract

Advances in machine vision and deep learning offer a promising solution for automated, non-destructive quality assessment for high-quality coffee. This study evaluated the performance of five YOLOv11 variants (n, s, m, l, and x) for real-time detection of defective coffee beans and identified the most suitable model in terms of detection accuracy and computational efficiency. A conveyor-based machine vision system was developed to acquire top-view images of Robusta coffee beans under controlled illumination. A dataset of 3,500 images was prepared, comprising 3,000 annotated images for training and validation (80:20) and 500 images reserved for blind testing. All defective beans were grouped into a single defect class, and the YOLOv11 variants were evaluated using precision, recall, F1-score, mean Average Precision (mAP) at IoU thresholds of 0.5 and 0.5:0.95, and inference time. All YOLOv11 variants achieved high detection performance, with mAP@0.5 values exceeding 0.98. YOLOv11s showed the best overall balance, achieving the highest recall (0.954), mAP@0.5:0.95 (0.689), and F1-score (0.959), while maintaining low inference time and a compact model size. Larger variants, such as YOLOv11x, achieved slightly higher mAP@0.5 but required substantially greater computational resources, whereas YOLOv11n provided faster inference but lower robustness under stricter localization criteria. Blind testing revealed a performance gap relative to validation results, highlighting remaining challenges in model generalization. Overall, the results confirm the effectiveness of YOLOv11 for coffee bean defect detection and identify YOLOv11s as the most suitable variant for real-time inspection within the defined experimental scope.

Abstract

This research aims to increase the effectiveness of adding Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) as an oxidizer in the process of making bamboo charcoal briquettes. The research methodology includes several stages, starting from preparing bamboo waste raw materials, the carbonization process to produce charcoal, to printing briquettes with varying concentrations of KMnO4 (0, 5, 7.5 and 10%). Tests carried out include analysis of heating value, combustion rate, density, air content, compressive strength, ignition duration and ash content to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the briquettes. The results showed that the addition of KMnO4 had a significant effect on the parameters tested. A KMnO4 concentration of 10% speeds up the ignition time of briquettes significantly to 15 seconds, but results in a decrease in the highest heating value from 5382 cal/g (at 0%) to 5131 cal/g and an increase in the highest ash content to 16.7 g. Treatment with a concentration of 5% showed the most optimal compressive strength value. The use of KMnO4 is effective in accelerating initial ignition but can reduce several other essential qualities such as heating value and ash content. Determining the right concentration is crucial to producing briquettes with balanced performance.
