Analysis on Achievement Test in Intensive English Program of IAIN Samarinda Sucahyo, Sari Agung; Noor, Widya Noviana

Abstract

As one of the tests, achievement test has to be qualified. A qualified test will be able to give the information about teaching correctly. If the achievement test is less qualified, the information related to students’ sucesss to achieve the instructional objective will also be less qualified. It means the test has to meet the characteristics of a good test. In fact, there has not been any effort yet to identify the quality of the achievement test which is used in Intensive English program. It means the information of the test quality cannot be found yet. Therefore, researchers are interested in analyzing the quality of achievement test for students in Intensive English program of IAIN Samarinda. Design of this research belongs to Content Analysis. Subject of this research is English achievement tests and 28 to 30 students were involved in the process of try out. Data were collected through three steps. Data were analyzed based on validity, reliability, and item quality. Finding of the research reveals 60 % of the tests have a good construct validity justified by related theories. It was found 55% of the tests have a good content validity. Reliability coefficient of the first tests format is 0, 65 and the second tests format shows 0, 52. Calculation of item difficulty shows 68% of the test items were between 0,20 – 0,80. The estimation of item discrimination shows 73% of the test items were between 0,20 – 0,50. While calculation of distracter efficiency shows 65% of the distracters were effective to distract the test takers.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate issues of Indonesian EFL students’ writing skills, covering ability, problem and reason why they got problems in writing comparison and contrast essay. The convergent parallel of mixed methods was used to explore these issues by involving 52 EFL students of IAIN Samarinda who enrolled the academic essay writing course. The three research instruments; essay writing test, open-ended questionnaire and interview were used in the data collection. The findings of this study revealed that the Indonesian EFL students’ writing ability was good that categorized with the mean score 77.83. However, some of them encounter problems in writing aspects including content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Their reasons in experiencing these problems are not only limited knowledge of writing aspects and comparison and contrast essay itself, but also they had own personal reasons; lack of writing practice, writing dislike, writing anxiety, negative writing perception, low writing motivation, insufficient time given in writing test, and also inadequate teaching writing process taught by their lecturers. Indeed, the teaching writing improvement that involved EFL students and lecturers should be well-integrated in order to alleviate the students’ essay writing problems related to their reasons and to improve their writing ability. Factors caused the writing difficulties will be discussed further and some suggestions will be given on this research.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand the writing error of eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Samarinda. The descriptive qualitative method was used to examine the written exposition text made by 15 students. The data was collected from the participants’ writing on exposition text and analyzed based on the errors’ categorization. The result showed that there are 16 categories of errors found in the data. They were punctuation, missing word, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, spelling, singular or plural, unnecessary word, wrong word form, wrong word, wrong order, fragment, preposition, conjunction, article, and need-further support error. The error factors were intralingua transfer, interlingua transfer, and students’ lack of knowledge about writing.

Abstract

Kecerdasan interpersonal memiliki peran penting bagi anak usia dini dalam rangka tumbuhkembangnya. Oleh karena itu, guru memiliki peran yang sangat vital untuk mengembangkan kecerdasan tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji upaya guru PAUD dalam membangun kecerdasan intrapersonal anak yang penting bagi tumbuh kembang kemampuan bersosialisasi anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif jenis studi kasus. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk menganalisa upaya guru PAUD dalam mengasah kecerdasan intrapersonal anak usia dini. Adapun upaya guru PAUD antara lain melibatkan anak dalam memilih judul buku; memberi kesempatan kepada anak untuk melanjutkan cerita yang sudah dilakukan oleh gurunya sebelumnya; serta melibatkan orang tua. Dengan mengembangkan dan mengenali kecerdasan intrapersonalnya seorang anak dapat mengenali dirinya sendiri dan mengelola emosinya dengan baik.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to explore and describe how well the type of writing task offered in the textbook matches up to the type of writing task proposed by Paul Nation. The study used qualitative research with a content analysis technique. Based on Louis Cohen the study process of data analysis technique through content analysis are follow: Selecting, classification, analyzing, and Inference. To calculate the results of data results, the researcher calculates percentages using Arikunto’s quality categorization schema. The data obtained from the English textbook “Think Globally Act Locally” for Junior High School’s Ninth Grade Depending on the theory that researcher used on English textbook, analysis found three kinds of writing tasks: experience tasks, guided tasks, and independent tasks. However, neither of the writing tasks were completed.supplied by this textbook suit the sorts of shared tasks. The dominant of writing task way found on this English textbook was guided task (51.7%).

Abstract

The research aims to evaluate English Department by using model of Countenance Stake on the components of context, input, process, and product. The research is an evaluation research. The research done in four universities, they are IAIN Samarinda, ABA Colorado Balikpapan, Universitas Kutai Kartanegara and Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. The data is collected by observation, interview, and documentation, and then analyzed in a qualitative descriptive way. The result of the research on the aspect of Antecedents shows that English Department is not yet in line with the institution’s stand, that is the department’s vision, mission and goals that have been compiled; Transaction, in the evaluation of input, the factors that affect the learning process, such as learning media, they are syllabus, SAP, test, and strategy in learning made by the lecturer of the English Department is good and the outcome of product includes the students learning outcome in one semester is good which is in accordance with the achievement that the department wants to achieve.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to investigate the process of foreign language acquisition of certain kid in Samarinda, as the capital city of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Two months case study have already conducted to capture all phenomenon happened especially towards important factors from several experts which are potentially influenced the process of L2 acquisition i.e. general factors e.g. aptitude, age, intelligence, cognitive, attitude, motivation, and personality (Ellis, 2008), linguistics input including formal and informal environments (Krashen, 1981), and three second language believes i.e. behaviorist, innatist, and interactionist (Lightbown & Spada, 2006). Direct observation to the subject condition and environment was done as well as semi-structured interview to obtain deeper information from the caregiver who has direct interaction with the subject every day. As the result, the findings indicate that a proper stimulus can motivate the subject to learn and acquire the L2 even though stable proportion from both formal and informal environments as linguistics input should be noticed in order for the subject to have better achievement on her L2 acquisition. Other factors influenced the L2 acquisition of the subject is also explained following by its implications and suggestions regarding with this research focus.

Abstract

Berhasil dan tidaknya belajar itu tergantung beberapa faktor. Adapun faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran antara lain faktornya kejiwaan (psikis) dan mental spiritual. Pada sisi lain, ada seorang siswa yang kurang percaya pada diri sendiri, hal ini menjadi permasalahan dalam kegiatan pembelajaran. Sikap kurang percaya diri dikarenakan rasa malu, minder, sungkan, dan takut salah saat menjawab atau mengeluarkan pendapat pada pelajaran akidah akhlak. Pada pelajaran tersebut banyak yang hampir serupa maknanya sehingga membuat siswa kurang percaya diri saat menjawab pertanyaan dari guru sehingga keluarlah reward sebagai penguatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa besar pengaruh reward terhadap kepercayaan diri. Metode pada penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kuantitatif. Populasi dalam penelitian ini yaitu 182 siswa di MTs Darul Ihsan Samarinda. Kemudian peneliti menentukan sampel penelitian dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling sebanyak 65 siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini angket (kuesioner) dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan korelasi product moment sebesar 0,582 dan pengaruh reward terhadap kepercayaan diri sebesar 33,9%. Disimpulkan penelitian pengaruh pemberian reward terhadap kepercayaan diri siswa pada mata pelajaran akidah akhlak di MTs Darul Ihsan Samarinda berkategori cukup berpengaruh.
