Abstract

Elementary mathematics education necessitates new instructional strategies that can address the varied baseline competencies and backgrounds of kids. The Eliciting Activities Model is a strategy that prioritizes student-centered discovery to enhance learning outcomes. This study seeks to examine the use of the Eliciting Activities Model on mathematics learning outcomes, focusing specifically on students' beginning mathematical competencies and their educational backgrounds. This quantitative study was carried out in three elementary institutions: SDN Batujajar 3, SDN Sukamaju, and SDS Yayasan Beribu, encompassing a total of 81 pupils. The research utilized a survey methodology and applied Two-Way ANOVA to investigate the impact of school origin and beginning mathematical proficiency, along with their interaction, on mathematics learning outcomes. The data gathering process included pre-tests to evaluate students' basic mathematical competencies and post-tests to measure learning results following the implementation of the model. The findings indicated substantial disparities in mathematics learning outcomes contingent upon school origin and pupils' beginning competencies. A notable interaction effect was observed, wherein students with high beginning ability from SDS Yayasan Beribu attained superior learning outcomes relative to students from SDN Batujajar 3 and SDN Sukamaju. The findings indicate that the Eliciting Activities Model effectively improves mathematics learning outcomes, especially when tailored to students' beginning skills and the educational environment.

Abstract

Literacy skills are one of the mathematical abilities that all students need to have in today's global era. However, not all students in border schools have good mathematical literacy skills. This type of research is descriptive qualitative which aims to get an overview of the mathematical literacy skills of students in border areas in solving Minimum Competency Assessment-based problems and also identify factors that influence these skills. This study involved all 57 seventh grade students in the first semester of SPMN Lorontuan Atambua - NTT. The test questions were four numbers in the form of true and false, multiple correct answers and short form. The results of the analysis found that some of them could not read fluently; not all students had a good understanding of basic mathematical concepts; lack of learning experience of contextual problems or story problems that caused them to have difficulty understanding the problem, choosing the mathematical concept used to answer the problem and could not analyze the information provided. The reconstruction that we provide is the need to build a strong mathematical understanding by designing mathematics learning that integrates local wisdom and technology and provides them with varied learning experiences on story problems.         Keywords: math skills, literacy, schools at the border. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i2.pp728-751

Abstract

This study sought to ascertain whether students' comprehension of mathematical topics had increased as a result of using Discovery Learning with GeoGebra. This study employed a mixed model with a convergent parallel design. 58 eighth-graders from SMP Negeri 5 Purwakarta served as the subjects. Two groups of students were created: an experimental group and a control group. Pretests, posttests, and student response surveys were used to gather data. The Mann-Whitney test, normality, and N-Gain were used to assess the data. According to the data, both groups improved in the moderate category; nevertheless, the experimental class's average N-Gain (0.51) was higher than the control class's (0.38). The Mann-Whitney test findings showed a significant difference (sig. 0.004 < 0.05). Thus, the GeoGebra-assisted discovery learning model enhances conceptual mathematical knowledge more effectively than conventional learning. Furthermore, learning that encourages active participation in discovering ideas is well-received by students.

Abstract

Indonesian students’ mathematical literacy skills, particularly in algebra, are still relatively low, as shown by the results of PISA 2022. A significant contributing factor is the limited relevance of teaching materials to students’ real-life contexts. This study introduces an innovative approach by developing algebra teaching materials based on local wisdom—referred to as local wisdom literacy—as a meaningful context for improving mathematical literacy among seventh-grade junior high school students. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of traditional Timorese cultural practices, such as weaving patterns, local measurement systems, and indigenous numerical reasoning, into formal algebra instruction. Using the ADDIE development model, this Research and Development (R&D) study produced culturally embedded materials that were validated by experts, with validity scores of 85.4% for content and 85% for assessment instruments. The materials were also considered highly practical (96.93% by students, 96% by teachers) and effective, as indicated by a moderate average N-Gain of 0.42 in student learning outcomes. In addition to improving conceptual understanding and mathematical literacy, the developed materials serve as a culturally responsive pedagogical model that is in line with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum and supports the preservation of local culture. This study provides a contextual and humanistic alternative in algebra learning, which offers pedagogical value and cultural significance
