Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a metabolic disorder characterized by excessive fat accumulation, leading to various health complications. One potential approach to managing obesity is through natural products, such as medicinal plants. Aims: This study evaluates the anti-obesity activity of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) extract obtained using the green extraction method in male rats (Rattus norvegicus). Method: A total of 18 male rats were divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (Na-CMC + NADES), positive control (orlistat), and three treatment groups receiving NADES Purslane Herb Extract (NPHE) at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW. The treatment groups were induced with a high-fat diet for 30 days, followed by 14 days of therapy. Result: Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc test showed that NADES purslane herb extract exhibited significant anti-obesity effects, with the most effective dose being 200 mg/kg BW, which reduced body weight by 13.004% and BMI by 17.935% in male rats. Conclusion: These findings suggest that purslane extract has potential as a natural anti-obesity agent. Further research is needed to explore its bioactive compounds and mechanisms of action, supporting its potential development in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Abstract

Portulaca oleracea L. is one of the plants empirically used as medicine and contains flavonoid compounds assumed to have an immunomodulatory effect. The research aimed to determine the immunomodulatory effect of ethanol extract of Portulaca oleracea L by Delayed Type Hypersensitivity parameter. The research used 20 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 5 groups where each group consisted of 4. Group I as a normal group (without treatment), group II (NaCMC control), group III, IV and V (treatment groups) were given EEHK with doses of 100 mg/kg BW, 200 mg/kg BW, and 400 mg/kg BW doses. The dosage form was orally given for 7 days. On day 3, the rats were induced with SDMD antigen 10% v/v by intraperitonial and intraplantar on day 7. The observations were conducted by measuring the volume change of the rat's feet at the 4th, 24th, and 48th hours using a pletismometer. The research data obtained were statistically processed using Paired Samples T Test, One-Way Anova and Post Hoc LSD tests. The results of the research showed that the ethanol extract of common purslane was effective as an immunomodulator.

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is an chronic autoimmune disease, which is characterized by inflammation and degradation of the joints and cartilages. Rheumatoid therapy is currently using immunosuppressant drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids. Treatment of chronic rheumatoid can trigger side effects. Syzygium polyanthum leaves contain alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and essential oils consist of citral and eugenol which are thought to be potential as antirheumatoid. This study aims to determine the effect antirheumatoid arthritis and effective dose of ethanol extracts of Syzygium polyanthum leaf. This study used 15 male rats. Treatment started by measuring foot volume using a pletismometer and then inducting CFA intraplantary as much as 0,1 mL on day 1 and left until day 16th. On the day 17th a foot volume and arthritis index was measured and then treated until the day 30th. The animals were divided into 5 groups: negative control (Na. CMC 1%), positive control (methylprednisolone dose 1.646 mg / kg BW), ethanol extractof Syzygium polyanthum leaf at a dose of 75 mg / kg, 150 mg / kg and 300 mg / kg. On the day 31st, foot volume and arthritis index measurements were taken again. The results showed a decrease in foot volume and arthritis index after given of the extract. Foot volume difference data were analyzed using the One Way Anova test followed by the Post Hoc LSD test. The difference between the arthritis index data was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Mann-Whitney test. Statistical results show that positive control has the same effect as extract (P> 0.05). Based on the results of statistical analysis of inflammation of the foot volume and the arthritis index shows that the ethanol extract of Syzygium polyanthum leaf had an effect as an antirheumatoid arthritis

Abstract

Fameflower Leaves (Talinum paniculatum (Jacq) Gaertn) are medicinal plants that communities have traditionally used due to their active compounds, such as saponins, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes, sterols, and polyphenols found in both the leaves and roots. This study aimed to determine the dose of ethanol extract of fameflower leaves affecting the histology of the spleen in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) following ovalbumin antigen stimulation, as well as to observe changes in the spleen tissue structure after the extract treatment. The study used 20 Wistar rats divided into four groups. The rats were first adapted for 2 weeks and then fasted for 8 hours before the treatment—a group I served as the standard control. Group II was induced with ovalbumin antigen. Groups III and IV were induced with the antigen, and the ethanol extract of fameflower leaves was administered at doses of 0.4g/kgBW and 0.8g/kgBW, respectively. The extract was administered orally for 7 days to the test animals. On day 8, the test animals were sacrificed, and their spleens were harvested for histological preparation using the Hematoxylin-Eosin staining method. Microscopic observation showed no histological damage in the spleen, such as inflammation, degeneration, congestion, hemorrhage, or necrosis. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Bugis Ginseng leaves did not affect the spleen of rats at doses of 0.4g/kgBW and 0.8g/kgBW

Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and can lead to serious complications if not managed optimally. This study aims to evaluate the effects and optimal dose of ethanol extract of purslane herb (Portulaca oleracea L.) in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive male rats. The rats were divided into several groups: a negative control, a positive control (captopril), and three treatment groups receiving ethanol extract of purslane at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured throughout the study to assess the antihypertensive activity of the extract. The results showed that purslane extract at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight significantly lowered blood pressure, likely due to bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and phenols. These compounds exhibit vasodilatory activity, ACE enzyme inhibition, and diuretic effects that contribute to blood pressure reduction in the hypertensive rat model. Ethanol extract of purslane herb (Portulaca oleracea L.) was found to have a significant effect in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive rats, with the optimal dose for significant blood pressure reduction being 300 mg/kg body weight
