Abstract

Creativity is one of the fundamental abilities that needs to be develoved from the elementary school level. However, art learning in primary schools often remains conventional and provides limited space for student exploration, thus preventing students creative potential from developing optimally. This study aims to examine the role of natural material-based art learning through an explorative approach in developing the creativity of elementary school students. The method used is a literature review by analyzing and synthesizing 20 scientific articles published between 2021 and 2026. Sources were retrieved from Google Scholar, SINTA, and Garuda databases, selected based on topic relevance, methodological clarity, and journal accreditation status. The results indicate that: (1) natural materials foster students ingenuity, aesthetic sensitivity, and imagination through multisensory stimulation; (2) the explorative approach significantly enhances work originality and self-confidence in expression; (3) natural material-based art activities contribute to fine motor development and divergent thinking; and (4) this learning approach cultivates students environmental awareness. The novelty of this research lies in the synthesis of the relationship among natural materilas, explorative approaches, and elementary school students creativity within a single integrative conceptual framework for visual arts learning. The implications of this study encourage elementary school teachers to systematically integrate natural materials and explorative approaches into their visual arts lesson designs.

Abstract

The use of innovative and culturally based learning media is still not optimal in fine arts learning in elementary schools, so it is necessary to study teachers' perceptions of the use of paper puppets as an alternative learning medium. This study aims to determine teachers' perceptions of the use of paper puppets in fine arts learning in grade IV of Sukamantri Elementary School. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with research subjects being teachers and grade IV students of Sukamantri Elementary School. Data collection techniques were carried out through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively to obtain an overview of teachers' perceptions of the use of paper puppets in fine arts learning. The results showed that teachers tended to have positive perceptions of the use of paper puppets. This media is considered capable of increasing learning motivation, creativity, active participation, and students' understanding of fine arts materials. In addition, paper puppets also play a role as a means of introducing and preserving local culture to students. However, there are several obstacles in its implementation, such as limited learning time, availability of tools and materials, and differences in students' abilities in creating works. Overall, paper puppets are seen as an interesting, innovative learning medium, and in accordance with the characteristics of elementary school students so that they can support the creation of more meaningful and local culture-based fine arts learning.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Fine motor skill development remains an aspect of elementary student growth that is often inadequately addressed in formal classroom learning, particularly in art education, while local cultural heritage such as Sundanese wayang faces declining appreciation amid rapid digitalization. This study aimed to implement the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model through the making of Wayang Sukuraga to develop the fine motor skills of fourth-grade students at SDN Selaawi. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving 30 fourth-grade students as research subjects and their homeroom teacher as the key informant. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation over three weeks, beginning with a mosaic-making pretest to establish a baseline of students' fine motor abilities, followed by PjBL implementation through six stages of wayang production including cutting, assembling, pasting, and attaching the handle stick. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, with validity ensured through source and technique triangulation. The results showed that students exhibited low enthusiasm and high dependency on teacher assistance during the pretest, whereas during PjBL implementation they demonstrated significantly greater enthusiasm, independence, and neater, more controlled craftsmanship. These findings indicate that PjBL through Wayang Sukuraga effectively stimulates fine motor coordination while embedding meaningful local cultural values within the Kurikulum Merdeka framework. Keywords: Project Based Learning, fine motor skills, Wayang Sukuraga ABSTRAK Keterampilan motorik halus merupakan aspek perkembangan siswa sekolah dasar yang sering kurang mendapat perhatian optimal dalam pembelajaran formal, khususnya pada mata pelajaran seni, sementara warisan budaya lokal seperti wayang Sunda menghadapi penurunan minat di tengah derasnya arus digitalisasi. Kata Kunci: Project Based Learning, keterampilan motorik halus, Wayang Sukuraga

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the implementation of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model in macrame learning to enhance the creativity of fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Cidadap, Sukabumi Regency. One of the primary causes of low student creativity is the conventional, imitation-based approach in learning strategies, which limits students' opportunity to explore original ideas. To address this issue, this Classroom Action Research (CAR) was undertaken with the aim of improving student creativity through the implementation of the PjBL model. The research was executed in two cycles, each consisting of the phases of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection, with one meeting held in each cycle. Before the implementation of this method, students' creativity levels were considered low, with only 35.00% of students achieving the creative category. Following completion of the first cycle, the percentage increased to 60.00%. Following evaluation and improvements in the second cycle, the results increased significantly to 90.00%, surpassing the minimum target of 75%. These results indicate that the PjBL model has the potential to positively impact student creativity across all four indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration, enabling students to participate actively, creatively, and directly in the macrame project

Abstract

Art education in elementary schools plays an important role in fostering students’ creativity, self-expression, and imagination. However, classroom practices are of-ten oriented toward final products and imitation, limiting students’ opportunities to explore and develop their own ideas. This study aims to examine the exploration of students’ imagination through free drawing activities in elementary school art edu-cation based on a synthesis of previous research findings. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data were col-lected from scientific articles indexed in Google Scholar and national journals based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria and were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that free drawing activities provide students with opportunities to develop ideas, enhance creativity, strengthen self-expression, and improve creative thinking skills, resulting in more original artwork. Furthermore, the effectiveness of free drawing is influenced by the teacher’s role as a facilitator, a supportive learning environment, and the use of appropriate instructional media and teaching methods. In conclusion, free drawing is an effective instructional strategy for fostering students’ imagination and creativity through active, student-centered learning experiences in elementary school art education.

Abstract

Visual arts education in elementary school plays a crucial role in developing students’ creativity. However, instruction is still often focused on providing examples, so students’ opportunities to explore and develop ideas independently remain suboptimal. This study aims to describe the implementation of material-exploration-based visual arts instruction in developing the creativity of fourth-grade students at SDN Cikahuripan. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The research subjects consisted of 30 fourth-grade students at SDN Cikahuripan. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, and the researcher’s direct involvement in the teaching process. The data were analyzed through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that material-exploration-based visual arts instruction provides students with opportunities to actively engage in the learning process—from gathering materials from their surroundings and developing ideas to creating collage works based on their individual imaginations. This approach fosters a diversity of ideas, unique artistic outcomes, a willingness to experiment, and students’ self-confidence in expressing their ideas. Furthermore, the teacher’s role as a facilitator helps foster a more active and meaningful learning process. Thus, material-exploration-based visual arts instruction can serve as an effective alternative for developing creativity among elementary school students.

Abstract

Indonesia's cultural diversity is frequently used as a visual theme in visual communication design (VCD) products such as posters, packaging, advertisements, and social media content. However, the way multicultural identity is depicted often tends to be symbolic and stereotypical rather than substantive. This study aims to analyze how multicultural identity is represented in Indonesian visual communication design works and to identify the visual patterns and ideological tendencies that emerge within them. This research uses a qualitative descriptive-interpretive method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, examining denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in a purposive sample of visual works published between 2020 and 2025. The data were obtained through visual documentation, literature review, and interviews with practicing designers. The results show that multicultural representation in Indonesian VCD tends to appear in three patterns: ethnic-ornamental representation that emphasizes traditional attributes, religious-symbolic representation that highlights houses of worship and ritual objects, and inclusive-narrative representation that portrays everyday interaction among diverse groups. Ornamental representation dominates commercial works, while inclusive-narrative representation is more common in social campaigns. The study concludes that visual communication design has significant potential to construct an inclusive collective identity, provided that designers move beyond decorative multiculturalism toward contextual and participatory representation involving the communities being depicted.
