Abstract

This article discusses the relevance of Marcel Mauss's The Gift theory in understanding dance as aform of symbolic exchange in the context of performing arts. Based on a conceptual study and aperformance anthropology approach, this paper highlights the main principle in Mauss's theory, namely the obligation to give, receive, and reciprocate, which can be interpreted as a social structurethat binds the relationship between dancers, audiences, and society. In dance practice, the act ofdancing is seen as a "social gift" that contains moral, spiritual, and cultural values. The dancer'smovements, expressions, and performativity function not only as aesthetic representations, but alsoas a means of communication and exchange of meaning that creates a reciprocal relationshipbetween the performer and the recipient of the performance. Through an analysis of the socialfunction of dance, this article shows that the performance process is a total social event ( total socialfact ), as explained by Mauss, where the values of solidarity, empathy, and appreciation are realizedthrough symbolic interaction. The concept of the "soul of the gift" ( hau ) in Mauss's theory isreinterpreted as the artistic spirit in the performance that fosters emotional resonance betweendancers and audiences. Thus, The Gift theory not only enriches understanding of the social functionof performing arts, but also offers a new conceptual framework for dance education and practice inthe modern era.

Abstract

The dance industry faces challenges in economic sustainability due to the increasingly complex and rapidly changing dynamics of the arts market. This study aims to design a sustainable business model that integrates artistic and economic dimensions in dance production practices. By adopting a descriptive qualitative approach and reviewing literature from various sources, this study explores performing arts monetization practices, revenue diversification strategies, and digital technology-based innovations such as crowdfunding, merchandise, and digital products. The study results show that the sustainability of the dance industry is highly dependent on the ability of artists to build an adaptive, collaborative, and culturally value-based business system. The integration of choreographers' artistic visions and economic strategies has been shown to increase the resilience of arts organizations to crises, expand their audience base, and strengthen the socio-economic legitimacy of dance. This study provides a conceptual contribution to the development of an arts business model framework relevant to the context of the creative industry in the digital era, as well as practical implications for artists and policymakers in supporting a sustainable performing arts ecosystem.

Abstract

Abstract: This community service was carried out by applying Experiential Learning Theory at dance training activity. The purpose of this activity was to introduce multiculturalism among children through Nawung Sekar dance training. The training was conducted through a demonstration at the Citra Betawi RPTRA (Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak) on June 27, 2025. Participants consisted of children aged 6-12 years with a total of 20 children. There were four steps taken, namely, Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, Active Experimentation. The benefits found from this community service were seen from the children's attitude of having an interest in Javanese culture even though previously they were more familiar with Betawi culture through Betawi dance training. This is a form of introducing multiculturalism to children. This activity is effective if carried out in the RPTRA which is an open space that is easily accessible to children. The dance training demonstrates that traditional dance can be an effective medium for multicultural education and character building in children from an early age. In addition to contributing to the preservation of Indonesian culture, dance training can also foster a pattern of tolerance and inclusive attitudes. Abstract
