Abstract

Background: Poor quality and quantity are the main factors that contribute to the increasing inadequacy of micronutrients intake such as Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Vitamins A, and C since the complementary food was introduced at 6 months of infant’s age. Objectives: To analyze the prevalence and risk factors of inadequate micronutrients intake among children aged 6-23 months in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study used Individual Food Consumption Survey 2014 data from Indonesian Health Study and Development Agency involving 1575 children aged 6-23 months as the total subjects. Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) was measured by eight food groups for children under two years old. The prevalence of inadequate micronutrients intake used the probability approach. Binary logistic regression was used as a multivariate test to determine the risk factors of inadequate micronutrients intake. Results: The highest prevalence of inadequate micronutrients intake was vitamin C, while the lowest was zinc, with overall inadequate multiple micronutrients intake being 61.9%. About 57.7% and 15.9% of subjects were low in energy intake and achieved the MDD, respectively. Lived in rural area [OR=1.37(95%CI:1.06-1.77)], low education mother [OR=1.71(95%CI:1.32-2.22)], low energy intake [OR=6.22(95%CI:4.84-7.99)] and not achieved MDD [OR=4.84(95%CI:3.47-6.75)] were more likely to have inadequate micronutrients intake, while not consuming breast milk were less likely to have  inadequate micronutrients intake in children [OR=0.55(95%CI:0.43-0.71)]. Conclusions: Almost two-thirds of subjects were inadequate in overall multiple micronutrients. Low energy intake and not achieved MDD were the highest risk of inadequate micronutrients intake of subjects, instead of low mother education and living in rural areas.

Abstract

Background: Stunting and anemia are malnutrition and have become major public health problems. The evidence is limited about the coexisting stunting and anemia (CSA) among school-aged children (SAC).  Objectives: To analyze risk factors of stunting, anemia, and their coexistence among Indonesian children aged 6-9.  Methods: This cross-sectional study used secondary data from 1,986 children aged 6-9 years from 13 out of 34 provinces in Indonesia. Risk factors of stunting, anemia, and CSA were analyzed by logistic regression.  Results: The prevalence of stunting, anemia, and CSA among children aged 6-9 years was 24.8%, 30.5%, and 8.8%, respectively. Risk factors of stunting were anemia (OR=1.355), underweight father (OR=1.587), maternal education (<12 years) (OR=1.679), short parental stature (mother: OR=2.504, father: OR=1.995), low and middle sanitation score (OR=2.356, OR=1.366), and living in a rural area (OR=1.367). Risk factors of anemia were stunting (OR=1.307), age 6-7 years (OR=1.933), and parental anemia (mother: OR=1.973, father: OR=1.692). Children aged 6-7 years (OR=1.993) and short parental stature (mother: OR=1.901, father: OR=1.620) were risk factors for CSA.  Conclusions: The coexistence of stunting and anemia as a double burden of undernutrition exists among Indonesian children. An anemic child, an underweight father, low maternal education, low and middle sanitation score, and living in a rural area increase the risk of stunting. Stunted children and parental anemia increase the risk of anemia, short parental stature increases the risk of stunting and CSA, while younger children increase the risk of anemia and CSA.

Abstract

The validation of the nutritional literacy questionnaire with a broader concept has never been published in Indonesia. This study aims to describe the validation of a nutritional literacy questionnaire (Nulit) in adolescents in post-disaster areas. Content validation was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively. They involve nine panellists by calculating the content validity index (CVI) and multi-rater kappa statistics. Face validation involved ten adolescents living with their mothers in Palu during the 2018 natural disaster. The face validation, item validity, and reliability were assessed by the impact score, the correlation score of each item with the total score, and the value of Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha. The results found that the I-CVI on all items was between 0,78 - 1, which is considered very good. The validation of the questionnaire display found the statement items to be essential and appropriate in the daily life of adolescents, and the impact factor value was 3,9 - 4,3. A total of 21 items are valid; the Cronbach's alpha value is FNL= 0,73, INL= 0,70 and CNL= 0,71. In conclusion, the Nulit Questionnaire is valid and reliable for measuring nutritional literacy in adolescents in post-disaster areas.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects the structure and function of the kidneys. The burden of disease from CKD is expected to increase as the prevalence of CKD increases from year to year. The quality of the diet plays a role in the management and treatment of CKD. The diet quality of CKD patients is assessed using dietary acid load (DAL) which is estimated based on protein and potassium intake. A high score of DAL can lead to more rapid decline in renal function, rapid decline in GFR, and low-grade subclinical acidosis. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary acid load and kidney function in CKD patients with hemodialysis at the Bogor City Hospital. This study used a cross sectional design involving 50 subjects with CKD on hemodialysis. Data was collected by interview using a questionnaire for data characteristics and Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) for data intake. There was a significant relationship between DAL and eGFR, urea, and creatinine (p<0,05). The level of DAL plays an important role in the development and severity of CKD. Therefore, dietary recommendations for patients CKD on hemodialysis need to focus to the dietary acid load derived from foods and to the condition of hyperkalemia. Further research is expected to be carried out with an intervention, case control or cohort design, as well as using different equations in estimating DAL such as the net acid excretion (NAE), potential renal acid load (PRAL) equation.

Abstract

Stunting is a significant malnourishment problem in Indonesia. The 2021 Indonesian Nutritional Status Study (SSGI) reported that there are five provinces with a high prevalence of stunting (>30%). Age under two years (old age) is the golden period during which children overgrow, and malnutrition during this period can still be corrected. This study analyzed the dominant factors associated with stunting in two-year-old children from five provinces: Aceh, NTB, NTT, West Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the SSGI 2021. The subjects were 4,554. Children (0-23 months) under five. The 2021 SSGI study was conducted in 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities from January to December 2021. Data were collected through interviews using the SSGI 2021 questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Statistical applications were used for data processing. Data analysis was performed using multiple logistic regression tests with the criteria of p<0,05 and a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. The risk factors associated with stunting in children from the five provinces were underweight (OR=9,367), age 6-11 months (OR=1,386), age 12-23 months (OR=1,386), diagnosis of measles (2,5681 CI), male sex (OR=1,400), family size ≥ 8 people (OR=1,612), poor sanitation (OR=1,273 CI 95% 1,041-1,556), and the father's occupation as a farmer/occupation/fisherman/driver (OR=1,278). In conclusion, being underweight is the dominant factor associated with stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

Abstract

Growth disorders are also common in children. The Health Belief Model (HBM) predicts that maternal perception of child vulnerability to growth disorders motivates adequate feeding practices. Addressing these concerns can effectively drive intervention. This study examined the impact of nutrition education delivered via Instagram on complementary feeding (MPASI) practices in infants aged 6–12 months. This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Bogor City in the year 2024. The sample consisted of 76 breastfeeding mothers, selected using a randomized method. Participants were divided into two groups: the intervention group, which engaged in interactive Instagram discussions after receiving nutrition education (n= 38), and the control group (n= 38), which only received nutrition education. Data were collected through interviews using structured questionnaires. Educational materials were provided twice a week for four weeks via Instagram. The data were analyzed using t-tests. Results: A significant difference (p < 0,05) was observed in the effect of nutrition education delivered via Instagram, both within each group and between groups, in terms of dietary diversity, feeding frequency, and adequacy. In conclusion, interactive education through Instagram has a more significant impact on improving scores in most components of the Health Belief Model (HBM) related to complementary feeding practices.

Abstract

The primary nutritional problem of adolescents is the triple burden of malnutrition. Factors that trigger nutritional problems in adolescents include poor eating habits, low nutritional and socioeconomic knowledge, and sedentary activities. This study aimed to analyze differences in nutrition knowledge, diet quality, and their relationship with nutritional status among rural and urban school adolescents in West Aceh. This study used a cross-sectional design, involving 312 adolescent schools in West Aceh in 2023. Data on nutritional knowledge were collected using a questionnaire filled out by the subjects themselves, intake data using 2x24-hour food recall, and anthropometric measurements such as BAZ and Percent Body Fat (PBF) using BIA scales and microtoice. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and Spearman rank tests. There were significant differences in family characteristics, nutritional knowledge, and diet quality between the rural and urban school adolescents (p<0,05). There was a significant positive relationship between nutritional knowledge and diet quality and BAZ and PBF (p<0,05) only among rural school adolescents. In conclusion, family characteristics, nutritional knowledge, and diet quality differed significantly among the adolescents by region. In rural areas, nutritional knowledge and diet quality were significantly associated with BAZ and PBF. School adolescents' knowledge and diet quality remain low; therefore, nutrition education related to balanced nutrition guidelines is required.

Abstract

Diet and nutritional status play an important role in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Pro-inflammatory foods are linked to a decline in kidney function, whereas the nutritional status of obesity is a risk factor for CKD. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between  (DII), nutritional status, and CKD severity. This cross-sectional study was conducted between April and May 2023 at Bogor City Hospital.  A total of 64 patients with CKD were selected using accidental sampling.  Consumption data were collected from the SQ-FFQ, nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI), and disease severity was assessed using creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson, and Spearman correlation tests. Results: All subjects had positive DII scores, their nutritional status was mostly in the normal range (59,4%), and almost all subjects had CKD stage 5 (95,3%). No relationships were found between the DII score and creatinine level (p= 0,986) and eGFR (p= 0,359). There was also no relationship between nutritional status and creatinine (p= 0,985 ) and eGFR (0,442). In conclusion, a positive DII score indicated that all subjects consumed more pro-inflammatory foods. Actions are needed to get CKD patients with CKD  who consume more anti-inflammatory foods.
