Abstract

The tofu industry provides communities with affordable protein sources. As protein sources, the environmental impact of tofu production was compared to other protein sources. Further, the tofu industry also produces waste and by-products affecting the environment. Some previous studies learned the environmental impact of tofu production. In this study, we aim to get information on which stages of the process in the tofu industry impact the environment and what type of strategy is applied to reduce the environmental impacts. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) approach was then chosen to filter the most recent research publications published in international peer-reviewed journals. We found that most articles calculated the environmental impact based on GHG, which contributed mainly from imported soybeans and electricity used during production. This research can act as a foundation for further studies related to the tofu industries, enabling treatment, better strategies, and solutions for waste to be developed.

Abstract

Production processes in the palm oil industry pose hazards and risks of occupational accidents. PT XYZ's Palm Oil Mill (POM) unit recorded 15 accident cases in 2021-2023. This study aimed to identify occupational health and safety (OHS) hazards and assess risks at each stage of CPO production at PT XYZ's POM unit using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) method. This study involved all workers at PT XYZ's POM unit. Primary data were collected through field observations and questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from company documents. Data analysis included descriptive analysis and risk assessment using the HIRARC method. There were significant differences in risk levels between units. The Loading Ramp had the highest risk due to the intensity of activities, work at height, and heavy equipment movement. The Sorting, Sterilizer, Thresher and Digester, Press, Clarification, and Kernel units had medium risk, while the Weighbridge had the lowest risk. Human factors were the dominant cause of occupational accidents. Risk control recommendations were formulated based on the hierarchy of controls, including elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Abstract

This brief review highlights findings from research conducted in Indonesia, examining how packaging can play a crucial role in reducing food loss and waste within the supply chain. While the broader economic, social, and environmental ramifications of food waste are extensively covered in existing literature, this study specifically focuses on how innovative packaging solutions can mitigate food loss. In the realm of fresh produce, effective packaging not only preserves quality but also optimizes product protection, ventilation, and temperature regulation. The study explores several avenues for packaging improvements, including enhanced designs for distribution that reduce damage during transportation and handling, and consumer packaging innovations that help reduce household food waste by facilitating correct portion control and clarifying expiration date labeling. Furthermore, the adoption of pre-packaged goods is shown to streamline handling processes and improve inventory turnover in retail settings. A key insight from this research is that optimal waste reduction sometimes necessitates increased packaging use, highlighting the need for a holistic approach where packaging design is integrated thoughtfully with product needs to foster sustainability in the supply chain.

Abstract

The supply of safe drinking water in the developing world, particularly in Indonesia, has remained one of the major challenges. Millions are still without access to clean water, which inflicts public health and has negative implications for socioeconomic development. This paper elaborates on the multifaceted challenges facing the drinking water supply in Indonesian cities, from inconsistent policies and lack of autonomy for Water Agencies to aging infrastructure, unreliable power supply, and inadequate investment. Brief case studies from Jakarta, Surabaya, and Padang plainly bring out the specificity of issues in various cities. The paper suggests that solutions can lie in policy reform, empowering the water agencies, fighting corruption, greater investment in infrastructure, making the most of pricing and cost recovery, and strategic engagement with the private sector. Unless these are addressed, such challenges will persist in hindering the progress of Indonesia toward the universal access goal for all urban residents to sufficient, safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water

Abstract

This study presents a novel approach to fabricate alkali-treated aluminum (ATA) foil for point-of-use (POU) water disinfection, addressing the residue issue associated with conventional production methods. Traditional ATA foil production leaves a residual layer that hinders practicality in use. To cope with it, a supernatant Mg(OH)2 solution was employed, resulting in residue-free ATA foil. Two variants, conventional ATA foil (ATA foil-1) and supernatant-treated ATA foil (ATA foil-2), were fabricated and analyzed. Surface characterization revealed that ATA foil-2 had a smoother surface with fewer cracks while maintaining E. coli removal efficiency and methyl orange adsorption capacity similar as ATA foil-1. Maximum E. coli adsorption capacities were found at 572,967 CFU/cm2 for ATA foil-1 and 561,513 CFU/cm2 for ATA foil-2. Both foils achieved over 84% methyl orange removal, indicating adsorption as the primary removal mechanism. The findings demonstrated that the supernatant Mg(OH)2 method successfully produced residue-free ATA foil with comparable disinfection performance, thus eliminating the need for a washing step and enhancing its suitability for point-of-use water treatment applications.

Abstract

Traffic accidents were common problems in the implementation of a transportation system, including in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Traffic accidents that occur every year were the evidence by the number of traffic accidents that occur every year. One of the causes of traffic violations that result in accidents is the risk of driver fatigue while working. This study analyzed the work-fatigue in the driver of the Intercity in Province bus (AKDP) the scope of this study was all AKDP bus drivers with the origin of Padang City, Bukittinggi City, and Payakumbuh City. Measurement and analysis of work-fatigue were using the reaction timer to light response. The results showed that increasing the number of shifts would increase driver fatigue. 33.33% of drivers run into medium level of fatigue, and 38.89% of drivers run into heavy level of fatigue. The relationship between work-fatigue and the driver's shift correlated very strongly and positively with a correlation value of r = 0.81. The owner of the company needs to take measures to improve management to minimize the level of work on this driver that has the potential to cause traffic accidents.

Abstract

Distribution of fuel oil (FO) using tanker trucks is highly risky. Although PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has adopted the Tanker Truck Safety Management System, accidents still occur. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of FO distribution safety procedures at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Jambi. This study used a cross-sectional approach. Primary data were collected through direct observation of 50 tanker trucks, including the physical condition, completeness of documents, and driver behavior. Secondary data, such as accident and inspection reports, were also analyzed. Fishbone analysis was used to identify the root cause, and scoring was done to determine the solution. The evaluation showed that although the company had made efforts to implement safety procedures properly, 79 potential hazards were found in 38 of the 50 tanker trucks observed. The most common findings were related to damage to the emergency cut-off, fire extinguishers, and tires. Fishbone analysis identified human factors (awareness and understanding), materials (equipment quality), methods (inspection procedures), and the environment (road conditions) as the causes. The fuel distribution safety procedure at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Jambi is quite effective, but it needs improvement in supervision, training, and technology utilization. Further research with broader samples and coverage areas is recommended. Keywords: fishbone analysis, occupational safety, tanker trucks, fuel terminal.
