Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, classified as a social disaster, continues to present challenges even in the post-pandemic era, especially in regions where public awareness and belief in the existence of COVID-19 remain low. This study focuses on identifying and analyzing the communication patterns employed by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (RDMA) of North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province, in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. The research aims to determine the organizational communication patterns within RDMA post-COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to explore the types and effectiveness of communication patterns—vertical, horizontal, and diagonal—used within the organization. The findings reveal that RDMA adopts a "wheel communication pattern" to coordinate disaster mitigation efforts, emphasizing the strategic use of digital platforms such as WhatsApp groups for instructions, reporting, and coordination among team members. This study provides insights into effective organizational communication strategies for regional disaster management and offers recommendations for future research to explore disaster mitigation efforts through digital communication channels and social media dissemination

Abstract

This study examines the role of intercultural communication in resolving social conflicts in multicultural societies, with a case study in the Sukakarya District community, Musi Rawas Regency. Amidst the increasingly complex dynamics of cultural diversity, differences in values, norms, and perceptions between community groups often trigger social conflicts. Intercultural communication is considered a strategic instrument that can create mutual understanding and reduce tensions that arise due to these differences. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The data obtained were analyzed thematically to identify communication mechanisms that have been implemented by the community in reducing conflicts, as well as to reveal supporting factors for the success of intercultural interactions. Initial findings indicate that empathy, adaptation, and appreciation for the cultural identity of each group play an important role in creating social harmony. The results of this study are expected to provide significant contributions to the development of effective intercultural communication models, as well as provide strategic recommendations for policy makers and communication practitioners in designing preventive and adaptive intervention programs. Thus, this study not only enriches academic discourse but also becomes a practical reference in efforts to strengthen social integration and reduce conflict in multicultural societies.

Abstract

This research analyzes community perspectives on agriculture, plantation, and food programs in Lebong Regency, with a particular focus on the Double Cropping Season (MT2) program. This research draws upon three interconnected theoretical frameworks: Political Ecology Framework for analyzing power relations in environmental access, Sustainable Livelihoods Approach for examining rural community adaptations, and Adaptive Co-Management Theory for analyzing collaborative natural resource management. Using a mixed-method approach, the study was conducted in seven sub-districts with 100 respondents selected through cluster random sampling. The findings reveal varying levels of community satisfaction, with satisfaction indices reaching 76 in three main sub-districts and 66 in four companion sub-districts. 78% of the community supports program continuation with noted improvements. Key implementation challenges include inequitable land ownership structures, where the majority are tenant farmers, agricultural land conversion, and land conflicts related to conservation areas that cover 69.89% of Lebong Regency. Analysis through these theoretical frameworks reveals that successful agricultural development in Lebong requires fundamental changes in power distribution, institutional support, and program implementation approaches. The research recommends establishing a multi-stakeholder governance platform, modifying the MT2 program to focus on agricultural intensification, and adopting more flexible management approaches to balance agricultural productivity with conservation needs.

Abstract

This study examines the issue of identity confusion among the people of Bengkulu, which is characterized by a heterogeneous population. The research is based on field phenomena where many migrants and their descendants still experience uncertainty in expressing their cultural identity. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach focused on the community of Bengkulu City. These findings are analyzed using Michael Hecht’s Communication Theory of Identity (CTI), which conceptualizes identity as something that is formed, negotiated, and maintained through communication across four interpenetrative layers. The research informants consist of community leaders and academics who meet the established criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman approach and validated through source triangulation. The findings reveal that identity confusion is particularly evident among the younger generation whose parents are not originally from Bengkulu City. One way individuals attempt to construct their identity is by aligning themselves with one of the available "stocks of identity" in Bengkulu. These include: first, identifying as Orang Bengkulu (People of Bengkulu) and second, as Orang Melayu Bengkulu (Ethnic Malay of Bengkulu). .

Abstract

This study explores the role of nonverbal communication in shaping the “good looking” criteria during the recruitment process of female frontliners at BRI Bank Bengkulu. Appearance and nonverbal cues are often perceived as indicators of professionalism and service quality in the banking sector. Using Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory, the study analyzes how beauty standards are formed and sustained through the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants, consisting of Human Resource staff and prospective female applicants, along with documentation of company recruitment policies. The findings reveal that nonverbal communication elements—such as facial expressions, body posture, grooming, and attire play a significant role in constructing an image of professionalism and trustworthiness. However, the “good looking” standard also creates psychological pressure and perceived discrimination among candidates who do not meet visual expectations. These beauty oriented criteria, while reinforcing the corporate image, tend to overshadow technical competence and merit-based assessment. The study concludes that the overemphasis on physical appearance in recruitment reflects a socially constructed norm that perpetuates inequality and calls for a more balanced evaluation system emphasizing skill, competence, and personality.

Abstract

The phenomenon of feminine men's communication styles in society has resulted in changes in values that have received attention. This research aims to determine the social construction and actions of the people of Bengkulu city towards feminine men's communication styles using Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's Social Reality Construction Theory which includes three dialectical moments, namely externalization, objectivation and internalization. The results of this research are divided into three dialectical moments. First, the moment of externalization of informants who have circles and those who do not have circles with feminine men tend to stigmatize the communication style of feminine men like women, and is considered deviant behavior which is feared that there will be sexual deviations such as LGBT. Second, the moment of objectification of informants who have a circle and who do not have a circle with feminine men see the communication style of feminine men as a character in which the traits, attitudes and behavior shown in the form of self-presentation such as gentle and graceful demeanor, less manly, so considered weak men. Third, the moment of internalization of informants who have circles and those who do not have circles with feminine men consider that feminine men are good, friendly, pleasant individuals, good public speaking, expressive, confident, and tend to be the center of attention. The social construction of communities that have or do not have circles with feminine men assesses the communication style of feminine men as the character, traits, attitudes and behavior shown by certain individuals as a form of self-presentation which is considered positive and also negative. The social behavior of people who have or do not have circles with feminine men are open and can accept the communication style of feminine men but still limit their social interactions, interactions and communication for fear of deviation.
