The implementation of CLIL approach has already spread over the world in the past two decades which begins with movement of European Commission Policy. The Longitudinal research has been conducted to give a new insight regarding CLIL implementation. However, previous research scope is limited only for higher education. Having discuss four considerations that have to take into account, it can be therefore concluded that CLIL can be implemented in Senior high school level in Indonesia. The most pivotal factor is institutional support from government in which regulation regarding education goal can be arranged. In addition, the availability of prospective teacher is beneficial for sustain implementation, although they need pre-sessional and in-sessional training before teaching process. The other reason is that student would be free of national examination pressure so that they would be able to focus on sharping language skill in gaining communicative competence rather than mastering grammar. Absolutely, this condition provides a promising opportunities to apply CLIL approach and Task- based learning which aims to build communicative competence. However, it is still necessary to carry out longitudinal research in different context and level of students to unveil robustness and drawbacks of this approach.

Abstract

Academic writing is a cornerstone of higher education, yet for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, it presents significant challenges related to linguistic competence, genre mastery, and writing anxiety. This study investigates the impact of a novel pedagogical model integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Positive Psychology (PP) on multiple dimensions of student engagement. The study was conducted within a compulsory "Academic Writing for Professionals" course for English Literature students at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Employing a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design with 65 third-year students, the intervention group (n=33) engaged with the PjBL-PP model, while a comparison group (n=32) followed a traditional curriculum. Data were collected via pre- and post-tests measuring academic writing self-efficacy, writing apprehension, and a multi-dimensional student engagement scale (cognitive, behavioral, emotional). Qualitative data from project portfolios and semi-structured interviews were used to explore these dimensions and the concept of social presence. ANCOVA results showed the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement, and higher self-efficacy (p < .001), alongside a significant reduction in writing apprehension (p < .001). Qualitative analysis revealed how the model fostered deep cognitive processing through authentic tasks, promoted sustained behavioral effort, created a positive emotional climate, and established a strong sense of social presence. This study provides a robust framework for transforming academic writing instruction, demonstrating that the synergy of PjBL and PP cultivates the holistic engagement necessary for EFL students to become confident and competent professional writers.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on improving reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency among IAIN Palopo and Universitas Negeri Makassar students. With the increasing integration of AI in educational settings, this research aims to assess how personalized learning environments provided by AI can enhance students' literacy skills. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from pre-and post-test scores with qualitative data from student and lecturer interviews. The results indicate significant improvements in reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency, with moderate to large effect sizes observed across both institutions. Additionally, qualitative findings reveal that AI tools motivated students, increased engagement, and provided personalized learning experiences. However, challenges such as technological access and infrastructure limitations were identified, particularly at Universitas Negeri Makassar, which affected students’ ability to engage with the tools fully. The study concludes that while AI tools can significantly improve reading skills, successful implementation requires addressing infrastructure issues and ensuring the cultural relevance of learning materials. The findings suggest that AI should complement traditional pedagogical practices rather than replace them, offering a blended learning approach that supports deeper learning. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI in education and highlights the importance of adapting AI tools to local contexts to maximize their effectiveness.
