Abstract

A serious challenge which is faced by teachers is educating character and bringing norms being practiced by the society into the classrooom, and English teacher is no exception. The challenge makes IndonesianEducation is very dynamic as everything dealing with normsis always thethe concern and developed by scholars, parents as well as the government. Some scholars propose to foster English teachers as models of practicing norms, while some others think to integrate norms into teaching materials. The second thought invites curriousity on how the writer of English textbook supports the recent concern on norms, and the research on it becomes very important to do. Therefore the research dealing with several reading passages in the English Textbook was done. The design was descriptive qualitative which aimed at investigating whether the writer of English textbook integrates norms in reading passages he/ she wrote. The data was norms, while the data sources were reading passages in the 2015-English Textbook developed by The Ministry of Education and Culture. The result describes that norms of trust, discipline, respect to others and self-confidence were found in reading passages. It can be then concluded that the writer of English textbook integratesnorms in the text he/ she writes. The results of the research implies not only the seriousness of scholars, parents and government in fostering character education, but also the support and care of textbook writer in succeeding the education.It is therefore suggested to teachers, scholars as well as book writer to always concern with the society’s need in developing education, especially in sharing the existed and practiced norms.

Abstract

Writing is a challenging skill for some English students. Before writing, students must consider the genre. A text type is genre. It's not easy to apply genre theory in writing. The students must comprehend the text's genre, general organization, and lexico-grammatical features. They have lots of ideas but can't put them into a nice writing. This is a big issue for some EFL students. This study examined the impact of genre choice and generic structure on students' writing. The researchers studied the English Class of the Psychology Department of Universitas Muria Kudus. This study is descriptive qualitative. The descriptive qualitative examines the study of students' writings based on genre choice and generic structure. This study was conducted in English class at Universitas Muria Kudus at Psychology Department. Based on the research findings, students' descriptive texts consisted of a generic structure of identification and description. A person's introduction is described in identification. A person is described in a description. Identification and description were well used by all students. Thus, the students consistently used generic structure in their writings. However, there were issues with punctuation, diction, and meaning. This research may help English Education Department, especially students who need to better their texts and think about generic organization and challenges while writing.

Abstract

In this advanced information and communication era, technology can influence the educational practices of teachers and students. Watching Animation Video is one of the ways to develop listening skill and in this case, it refers to students’ perception of Animation Video as media for learning listening at SMK Al-Hikmah Jepara to gives them the authority to their listening skill. The objective of this research is aimed to know the students’ perception of Animation Video as media for learning listening at SMK Al-Hikmah Jepara. This kind of research is qualitative with a descriptive qualitative design. The participants of this research are 25 tenth grade students of AKL 1 at SMK Al-Hikmah Jepara. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. The result of this study shows that the perception of the tenth grade AKL 1 students of SMK Al-Hikmah Jepara toward using Animation Video as media for learning listening, it can be concluded that most of the students agree to use Animation Video as media for learning listening. It means that the use of Animation Video as media for learning listening gives a potentially positive contribution to developing listening skills. Most students are enjoy and interested in using Animation Video as media for learning listening. Not only that the use of Animation Videos does not make students bored, but students become more active so they are more interested and of course, Animation Videos also help students in increasing vocabulary and developing listening skills. Therefore, hopefully, this research will help students improve their listening skills, especially through the use of Animation Video as listening learning media. Besides that, the researcher also suggests teachers be able to use Animation Videos as media for learning listening in class. Then the researcher suggests for the next researcher, in order to be able can explore more information about the students' perceptions of using Animation Video as media for learning listening in different methods.

Abstract

Mastering vocabulary naturally aids students in the use of and examining the four language skills including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As a result, there is a precise hyperlink between vocabulary knowledge and language capability performance. Therefore, this study aimed to know the relationship between students' passive vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension at Public School in Kudus. The quantitative method design was used in this research. The subject of this research was 30 students who were randomly selected. The instruments used were multiple-choice tests to measure passive vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation with the help of SPSS 25. The results showed a positive and significant correlation between passive vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.533. This indicates that students' reading comprehension of English literature improves with their level of passive vocabulary acquisition. It means that the development of students’ vocabulary mastery is important to their reading comprehension. Therefore, teachers could implement more strategies that ultimately supporting students in becoming stronger and more confident readers. In addition, future researcher provides more nuanced insights into the relationship between passive vocabulary and reading comprehension on their research.
