Abstract

This research is motivated by the low learning motivation and critical thinking skills of students in the Catholic Religious Education subject at SMPN 4 Menyuke. The use of monotonous teaching methods is one of the main causes for the lack of stimulation for students to think critically. To address this issue, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method was implemented as an interactive approach aimed at improving students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes. This study used classroom action research conducted in two cycles. In cycle I, the observation of critical thinking skills showed that all students were in the "Developing" category with an average class score of 69.0. The most commonly achieved indicator was "Asking questions to clarify information," while the lowest was "Explaining assumptions used in the thinking process." In cycle II, there was a significant improvement with the average class score increasing to 81.1, reflecting the effectiveness of PBL in enhancing students' critical thinking and analysis. Cognitive learning outcomes also improved, where in cycle I most students were in the "Sufficient" category, and only 5 students reached the "Proficient" category with an average score of 78. In cycle II, the average score increased to 85, with several students reaching the "Proficient" category. This improvement between cycles indicates that PBL is effective in enhancing students' cognitive understanding.

Abstract

The Catholic Church has the authority to determine and oversee the content of the Catholic Religious Education curriculum. In alignment with the broader literacy movement in schools, it is essential that the materials used for religious literacy adhere to the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church. This study examines the key sources that must be considered when preparing materials for Catholic Religious Education in schools, focusing specifically on religious literacy. This qualitative research draws on existing literature, including previous studies and relevant documents. The findings suggest that Catholic Religious Education is inherently intertwined with theological reflection. As a component of theology, Catholic Religious Education provides a vital space for faith reflection, thereby contributing to the enhancement of Catholic religious literacy. In this context, the literacy movement within Catholic Religious Education must prioritize the foundational sources of the Catholic faith: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the teachings of the Magisterium. Additionally, the learner’s lived context should be recognized as an indispensable source, as it plays a crucial role in shaping their understanding of the faith.

Abstract

Child faith accompaniment plays a central role in the future development of children’s faith, making it the chosen initial teaching to prepare for a more mature faith development within a tiered faith formation. However, in the context of child faith accompaniment, there is currently no song themed on the Catholic Creed that can be taught to children, including at the Holy Family Parish Atmodirono Semarang, which has never used a song with this theme. This study aims to develop a child faith accompaniment (PIA) song themed on the introduction of the Catholic Creed to provide children with a deeper understanding of the Catholic Creed. The research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) to analyze the needs of PIA, design the product, conduct trials, and evaluate it to ensure a positive impact on children’s faith education. Initial analysis showed that there was no existing song media introducing the basic Catholic faith in PIA activities. In the design phase, the researcher composed lyrics and melodies relevant to Catholic teachings, using key phrases from the “I Believe” prayer, adjusted to be easily understood by children. The development phase involved a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with PIA practitioners and music experts. Subsequently, the song was trialed during Minggu Gembira activities and evaluated for improvements. The implementation of the song titled “I am Catholic, I Believe” showed positive impact. Observations revealed that children were enthusiastic, listened attentively, endeavored to understand, memorize, and sing the song together. Evaluation results showed an improvement in scores from 79% to 95.8%. Based on this increase, it can be concluded that the song “I am Catholic, I Believe” is highly effective and can be used as a child faith accompaniment medium to help children understand the meaning of the “I Believe” prayer as the Catholic Creed, as well as strengthen their understanding of the core teachings of Catholicism.

Abstract

Abstract

Community catechesis represents a model of faith education that emphasizes active community participation in living out the faith. However, the effectiveness of catechesis greatly depends on the competence and facilitation skills of environmental guides, especially those who are still novices. This study highlights the gap between theological understanding and facilitation practice that remains a challenge in building a dialogical and transformative learning process. This research aims to analyze the competence and facilitation skills of novice environmental guides in community catechesis at St. Peter Chrysologus Parish BSB. Using a qualitative approach, this research employs in-depth interviews and thematic analysis of eight key informants, including the parish priest, senior environmental guides, novices, and members of the catechetical commission. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña to identify patterns of required competencies and skills (Bazeley 2020). The results show that the basic competencies of environmental guides include a strong foundation of faith, doctrinal understanding, and the ability to manage group dynamics. However, they still face challenges in facilitating reflective dialogue and creating active participant engagement. Effective facilitation skills, such as active listening, creating safe spaces, and summarizing discussions, become key factors in improving the quality of catechesis. This research contributes to the development of more comprehensive training strategies for novice environmental guides, emphasizing experience-based approaches, mentoring, and continuous evaluation. The practical implications of this research point to the need for reform in catechetical training to address regeneration challenges and improve facilitation effectiveness in Church base communities.
