Abstract

Abstract

The growing global demand for coffee has heightened concerns about its social sustainability, particularly in smallholder-based production systems where empirical evidence remains limited. This study assesses the social impacts of Arabica coffee production in Samosir Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, using the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) framework and the 2020 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reference-scale approach. Six micro-scale Arabica coffee enterprises representing three management systems—private enterprises, middlemen, and a farmer group—were evaluated across six stakeholder categories and 26 social subcategories. All management systems achieved a “highly sustainable” rating, with social sustainability index scores of 0.88 for private enterprises, 0.87 for the farmer group, and 0.86 for middlemen. Key social hotspots were identified in occupational health and safety, the absence of written employment contracts, and limited employer-provided social security coverage. The findings indicate that targeted, low-cost interventions—such as basic OHS provision, simple employment contract templates, and facilitated enrolment in social security schemes—could significantly strengthen social outcomes without imposing excessive financial burdens on micro-enterprises, thereby enhancing social equity and resilience within Indonesia’s Arabica coffee value chain.

Abstract

Sustainable development goals now include efforts to achieve economic prosperity for people while complying with international agreements. Evidence has shown that the agricultural sector plays an essential role in driving the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of North Sumatra Province in 2022. The plantation crops sub-sector is the most significant contributor to the agricultural business sector. Coffee, an excellent agricultural commodity, is essential in developing neighboring regions. There are many small coffee plantations in North Sumatra, and local communities highly depend on its production. Arabica coffee development should be based on the capacity and prospects of the commodity in the region. The objectives of this study are to (1) describe the main areas where small-scale Arabica coffee producers operate in North Sumatra Province; (2) analyze the distribution patterns of small-scale Arabica coffee producers in North Sumatra Province; and (3) determine the extent to which Arabica coffee producers contribute to regional development. A descriptive-quantitative methodology was used in this study. Information was obtained from secondary data sources for the period 2019-2021. Location quotient (LQ) analysis, specialization, and localization analysis, primary service ratio (BSR), and regional multiplier (RM) analysis were used for data analysis. The analysis results show that Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, and South Tapanuli are the significant regions in the region.

Abstract

Inflation is highly detrimental to a country's economy. Inflation can be described as the purchasing power of an exchange rate over a period. Rising food prices can contribute to a country's inflation. The decline in a country's currency's purchasing power will impact the decline in people's purchasing power for daily needs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between price fluctuations and inflation in Medan City. This study primarily relies on secondary data as its primary source of reference. Secondary data was obtained from the website of the Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS) of North Sumatra Province and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Sumatra Province. The secondary data used in this study are strategic food price data on rice commodities, fresh chicken meat, beef, chicken eggs, shallots, garlic, curly red chilies, green cayenne pepper, cooking oil, and granulated sugar. Additionally, this study utilizes inflation data from Medan City. Price and inflation data were collected monthly from January 2020 to December 2023, encompassing both the pandemic and the post-COVID-19 period. Quantitative analysis uses an econometric model, namely OLS, which can be formulated using multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the test results, several commodities have an impact on inflation in Medan City, including rice, broiler chicken, beef, shallots, cooking oil, and sugar.

Abstract

Riau Province is one of Indonesia’s major centers of natural rubber production, with Kuantan Singingi Regency serving as its primary contributor. Since 2018, the regency has implemented an auction system for processed rubber (bokar) through the APKARKUSI institution to improve selling prices and reduce farmers’ dependence on intermediaries. However, the absence of a comprehensive evaluation regarding farmers’ satisfaction with APKARKUSI’s performance, coupled with the emerging trend of farmers reverting to conventional marketing systems, presents a critical issue that warrants further investigation. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of rubber farmers participating in the Bokar auction marketing system facilitated by APKARKUSI and to evaluate their satisfaction levels with the institution’s performance. The research was conducted in Kuantan Singingi Regency, which has the largest rubber plantation area in Riau Province and is the only regency to have consistently implemented the bokar auction system since 2018. Data were collected from 96 farmers selected through purposive sampling between December 2024 and January 2025. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI), and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). The findings reveal that most farmers have more than ten years of farming experience and possess at least a senior high school education, fostering openness to innovation and active participation in the auction system. The CSI score of 90.32%, classified as “very satisfied,” indicates that APKARKUSI’s performance aligns well with farmers’ expectations. IPA results indicate that marketing, information dissemination, and technological aspects fall within Quadrant II (maintain performance), while financing and agricultural machinery procurement fall within Quadrant I (top priority for improvement). These results provide valuable insights into strengthening institutional performance and can serve as a strategic framework for developing more sustainable marketing systems for other agricultural commodities.
