Abstract

This paper presents an analysis on political speech of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), the former president of Indonesia at the Indonesian conference on “Moving towards sustainability: together we must create the future we want”. Ideologies are closely linked to power and language because using language is the commonest form of social behavior, and the form of social behavior where we rely most on ‘common-sense’ assumptions. The objectives of this study are to discuss the common sense assumption and ideology by means of language use in SBY’s political speech which is mainly grounded in Norman Fairclough’s theory of language and power in critical discourse analysis. There are two main problems of analysis, namely; first, what are the common sense assumption and ideology in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s political speech; and second, how do they relate to each other in the political discourse? The data used in this study was in the form of written text on “moving towards sustainability: together we must create the future we want”. A qualitative descriptive analysis was employed to analyze the common sense assumption and ideology in the written text of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s political speech which was delivered at Riocto entro Convention Center, Rio de Janeiro on June 20, 2012. One dimension of ‘common sense’ is the meaning of words. The results showed that the common sense assumption and ideology conveyed through SBY’s specific words or expressions can significantly explain how political discourse is constructed and affected by the SBY’s rule and position, life experience, and power relations. He used language as a powerful social tool to present his common sense assumption and ideology to convince his audiences and fellow citizens that the future of sustainability has been an important agenda for all people.  Keywords: Political speech, common sense, assumption, ideology, sustainability, growth.

Abstract

Language plays an important role in human life as a medium of communication. The communication between sender and receiver is the activity of conveying ideas, messages, attitude, and mood of both speakers and hearers. This paper attempts to analyze cooperative principle (CP) and politeness principle (PP) in guest complaining at x hotel in Kuta-Bali through a series of conversation at the front desk. The data were gathered from guest’s conversation record book from one of the hotels in Kuta-Bali. The conversations have been transcribed into a written text. The intended data were identified, classified, and then separately analyzed based on cooperative and politeness principle. A qualitative descriptive analysis was employed to analyze CP and PP in the guest complaining as in line with the theories which are proposed by Grice and Leech. The results of analysis show that the receptionist carefully observed both CP and PP, but the guest’s responses might not necessarily comply with those principles for some reasons.  Keywords: Cooperative principle, maxim, speech acts, politeness principle, pragmatics.

Abstract

Apart from teaching, English language teachers need to assess their students by giving a test to know the students’ achievements. In general, teachers are barely conducting item analysis on their tests. As a result, they have no idea about the quality of their test distributed to the students. The present study attempts to figure out the levels of difficulty (LD) and the discriminating power (DP) of the multiple-choice (MC) test item constructed by an English teacher in the reading comprehension test utilizing test item analysis. This study employs a qualitative approach. For this purpose, a test of 50-MC test items of reading comprehension was obtained from the students’ test results. Thirty-five students of grade eight took part in the MC test try-out. They are both male (15) and female (20) students of junior high school 2 Kempo, in West Nusa Tenggara Province. The findings revealed that16 items out of 50 test items were rejected due to the poor and worst quality level of difficulty and discriminating index. Meanwhile, 12 items need to be reviewed due to their mediocre quality, and 11 items are claimed to have good quality items. Besides, 11 items out of 50 test items were considered as the excellent quality as their DP scores reached around 0.44 through 0.78. The implications of the present study will shed light on the quality of teacher-made test items, especially for the MC test.
