Abstract

Health literacy is crucial in palliative care, where patients often face complex medical conditions and must make end-of-life decisions. This literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of health literacy interventions in improving patient outcomes in palliative care settings. The review synthesized evidence from high-quality studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs, with a focus on various intervention strategies such as educational programs, multimedia tools, and health coaching. The review utilized the PRISMA framework for study selection and the JBI critical appraisal checklist for assessing study quality. It included studies from databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, focusing on publications from 2016 to 2025. The studies consistently showed that these interventions enhance patient understanding, engagement in treatment decisions, and overall quality of life. However, challenges remain in identifying the most effective interventions due to variations in study designs and outcome measures. This review highlights the significance of health literacy interventions in palliative care, advocating for additional research that focuses on LHL-specific strategies and standardized outcome measures to improve patient care.

Abstract

Objective: Patients with grade III open fractures treated with OREF may experience postoperative pain, which can hinder mobilization and prolong their hospital stay. Non-pharmacological interventions such as cryotherapy are needed to help control pain safely. Clinical nursing practice does not have enough case studies on the effectiveness of cryotherapy in reducing postoperative pain. Objective: To describe the application of cryotherapyfor pain reduction in a patient with a grade III open femoral fracture following OREF in a case study. Case Report: This case study involved one male patient with postoperative pain following femoral fracture surgery who received cryotherapy in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for cold therapy at Seruni Ward, dr. Soebandi Regional Hospital, Jember. For three days, the therapy was given once daily for 15 minutes. The researcher assessed the intensity of pain using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after each intervention session. Result: Pain scores decreased gradually from 6 to 4 on the first day, 5 to 3 on the second day, and 4 to 2 on the third day. In addition, facial grimacing and protective behavior showed gradual improvement over the three-day intervention period. Conclusion: Cryotherapy was effective in reducing postoperative pain and can be utilized as a safe and practical non-pharmacological nursing intervention.INTISARILatar belakang: Nyeri pasca operasi pada pasien fraktur femur OREF, terutama fraktur terbuka grade III, dapat menghambat mobilisasi dan memperpanjang rawat inap. Abstract

Pleural effusion is the accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity or membrane that separates the inner chest wall from the lungs. Pleural effusion can affect hemodynamics because increased intrapleural pressure can push organs in the mediastinum. Providing a semi-fowler position is one of the nursing interventions that is expected to improve hemodynamic status in patients with pleural effusion. This study aims to determine the implementation of nursing care for patients with pleural effusion by applying the semi-fowler position to hemodynamic status in the Catleya Room, dr. Soebandi Hospital, Jember. The research method in this study uses a case study. The respondents and place in this study were Mr. T. with pleural effusion in the Catleya Room of RSD dr. Soebandi Jember. Semifowler position intervention was given for 3 days with a duration of 2 hours. The results of this study indicate that on the first day, there was a decrease in blood pressure, MAP, and respiratory rate. While the pulse rate and oxygen saturation increased. On the second and third day, of the application of the semifowler position, the results showed that there was a decrease in respiratory rate and an increase in pulse rate and oxygen saturation. While there were no hemodynamic changes in blood pressure and MAP. The conclusion of this study is that the implementation of the semi-Fowler position has an effect on hemodynamic status, especially on reducing respiratory rate and increasing pulse rate and oxygen saturation.

Abstract

Lower extremity edema is a common complication in patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to fluid imbalance. Non-pharmacological therapies such as ankle pump exercises and 30°-foot elevation can be effective alternative interventions to reduce edema. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of combining ankle pump exercises and 30°-foot elevation in reducing the degree of edema in CKD patients. This research employed a quantitative descriptive case study method involving one patient with stage 5 CKD. The intervention consisted of ankle pump exercises and 30°-foot elevation conducted over three consecutive days. Each ankle pump session lasted 1 minute per position, and foot elevation was maintained for 5–10 minutes per session. Edema assessment was conducted pre- and post-intervention using the Grading Pitting Edema scale. The study showed no reduction in the edema grade from day one to day three. However, a decrease in edema depth was observed on the third day of the intervention, indicating that no significant reduction in the overall edema grade occurred. The application of ankle pump exercises and 30°-foot elevation over three days did not show a clinically significant reduction in edema. However, a positive effect began to emerge on the third day, with a 1 mm decrease in edema depth. The combination therapy has the potential to reduce lower extremity edema in CKD patients, but it requires consistent application and optimal intensity to achieve significant outcomes. This intervention may serve as a safe, non-invasive, and practical non-pharmacological option in evidence-based nursing care.

Abstract

Background: Pain is a primary complaint among patients in healthcare services. The failure in pain management can increase morbidity and mortality rates. There is a need to improve nursing students' competencies through innovative Web-Based Learning (WBL) models, which leverage technology to create a comprehensive and interactive learning environment. This study aims to develop CALM (Case-based Advanced Learning for Pain Management) to enhance the attitudes and knowledge of final-year nursing students regarding pain.Method: The research design used was Research and Development (R & D), involving final-year nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing, University of Jember, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The research instruments used were the Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain (KASRP), Nurse Behavior Questionnaire in Pain Management (NBQ-P), Focus Group Discussion (FGD) guide, and System Usability Scale (SUS). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistical analysis. Results: The results of the study indicated that the knowledge and attitudes of final-year nursing students regarding pain fall into the low category (53.8%). In terms of pain management behavior, the majority of respondents were in the good category (55.90%). The development of CALM learning media resulted in six modules to be developed: pain assessment and evaluation; pain pharmacology; non-pharmacological interventions; pain in special populations; and cultural, spiritual, and ethical aspects of pain management. The feasibility test of CALM learning media showed positive results. Conclusions: The development of CALM learning media was highly accepted, functions optimally, facilitating access to pain-related information, and aligning with previous evidence regarding the effectiveness of e-learning and interprofessional curricula, which have the potential to enhance knowledge, assessment skills, and learning satisfaction among students
