Abstract

Abstract

Prospective teachers are at the forefront in forming quality students. As a prospective teacher, it is good to be able to master the material given to students, including prospective teacher’s mastery of numeracy questions. For this reason, this research aims to determine the numeracy abilities of prospective teachers in applying problems in everyday life. This qualitative descriptive research uses numeracy questions created by students by providing a sample of 27 students. The technical analysis used is manual analysis by two analysts and Cohen Kappa analysts agreed that the quality of the questions being developed was still at the lowest level. Apart from that, grouping numeracy questions based on cognitive level, context, and domain content. Furthermore, the Cohen Kappa analysis shows a value of 1, which means there has been good agreement between the two analysts.

Abstract

Knowledge of financial literacy, including Islamic financial literacy which has been widely used in various financial products, intersects with several domain areas in mathematical concepts, especially in basic arithmetic which requires students to perform basic calculations before making the right financial decisions. This research aims to develop an instructional design of social arithmetic learning using Math-based Islamic Financial Literacy (MIFL) framework for Islamic schools. We develop a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) for fostering students' numeracy and Islamic Financial Literacy (IFL) skills by using MIFL framework that involves various Islamic financial problems as context in mathematics tasks. We chose design research as the method for accomplishing our objective. However, we will discuss about task design and a portion of one of the three major phases of design research, namely pilot experiments. We involved three experts to provide suggestions to improve the tasks and six students from an Islamic junior high school participated in this study. We designed three stages of learning activities. Identifying of math-based Islamic financial information, analyzing math-based Islamic financial context, and applying math-based Islamic financial knowledge and understanding for completing the tasks are the three activities. Results indicate that HLT can indeed assist students in acquiring fundamental arithmetic abilities and advance their IFL. To improve the learning trajectory, we added several sub-sections of activities that bridged the understanding of mathematics and IFL.

Abstract

Despite the growing advocacy for integrating financial literacy into mathematics education, existing models rarely align financial concepts explicitly with mathematical competencies. This study introduces Mathematics-based Financial Literacy (MFL) and develops a novel conceptual framework that integrates financial literacy with key mathematical competencies, aiming to enhance students’ critical financial decision-making skills. The framework was constructed using a systematic methodology adapted from Jabareen, comprising four phases: literature review, pattern identification, category synthesis, and framework conceptualization, complemented by expert consultation. The development process involved deconstructing financial literacy concepts, identifying elements influenced by mathematical competencies, and synthesizing these elements into coherent categories to form a unified framework. The resulting MFL framework consists of four core content areas: financial calculations and transactions; risk and benefit analysis of financial products; tax calculations; and mathematics-based financial planning and management. These content areas are supported by six key mathematical competencies, which include reasoning and argumentation, communication, modelling, representation, problem solving, and the use of symbols and formalism, spanning three mathematical domains: quantity, change and relationships, and uncertainty and data. This structured mapping explicitly integrates mathematical competencies with financial literacy domains, providing a comprehensive and practical model for classroom implementation, while enabling teachers to design effective learning tasks and assessments that foster students’ financial comprehension and informed decision-making. Thus, this study offers a novel contribution to mathematics education by presenting a conceptual framework that systematically links financial literacy and mathematical competencies, supporting the implementation of measurable and relevant financial skills-based learning for students.

Abstract

Geometry is one of the content of mathematics which in many studies is associated with students' thinking abilities, such as critical thinking and reasoning abilities or others..This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the geometry research in school for identifying the types of mathematical thinking and their interconnections. We searched the Scopus database for articles published from 2003 to 2023 using relevant keywords. We applied the PRISMA method to select and evaluate the studies or articles based on the empirical data. We retrieved and evaluated data from the studies on the various styles of mathematical thinking evolved. Out of 166 titles that were initially obtained, only 10 titles passed the five stages of the systematic review protocol process. We identified 10 types of mathematical thinking that were discussed in the context of learning geometry at school: Creative Mathematical Reasoning (CMR), Computational thinking, Geometric reasoning, Geometric thinking van hiele theory, Geometric thinking (3D geometric thinking with representations), 3D geometry thinking, Visuo spatial reasoning, Geometry Spatial Reasoning, mathematical creative reasoning (MCR), and Inductive reasoning. We also found some connections of literature between these types of mathematical thinking, such as CMR and MCR, Geometric reasoning and Geometric thinking, and Visuo spatial reasoning and Geometry Spatial Reasoning. This systematic review provides an overview of the current state of research on geometry and reasoning in school mathematics and reveals some gaps and directions for future study. It also has implications for teachers who want to enhance their students’ mathematical thinking skills in geometry by exposing them to different types of mathematical thinking and their connections.
