Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of the research were to find out the problems faced by the teacher in the process of teaching English to the deaf students and how to overcome the problems. The research object were the first grade deaf students of SLB Negeri Siak and the subject of this research was an English teacher of SLB Negeri Siak. This qualitative research used a case study method. The data were collected by using interview. The researcher used member checking technique to show the trustworthiness of the data. The results of this research showed that the problem that teacher faced varies and the most crucial problem is the abilities of the students heterogeneous. Based on the theory of Thompson (2012) the teacher has followed the instruction to teaching for deaf student by following her own way to solve the problem.Key Words: Problems, Teaching English, Deaf Students

Abstract

Abstract: This research belongs to descriptive research which uses a quantitative approach. The research was aimed to find out the ability of English study program students in identifying noun clauses. The population of this research was the fifth-semester students of the English study program of FKIP Universitas Riau with a total number of population is 110 students. The number of the sample in this research was 36 students, selected by using the cluster random sampling technique. A multiple-choice question test about noun clauses was used as the instrument which consisted of 30 items. There were eleven forms of noun clauses based on the types of each function of noun clauses. The result of the research shows that the mean score of the students in identifying noun clauses was 64. In brief, the English study program students’ ability in identifying noun clauses was categorized into a good level ability.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Identifying, Noun Clauses

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the Ability of the Second Year Students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru in Comprehending Recount Texts. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru. The number of sample was 30 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The research instrument was multiple choice questions consisted 40 questions. The test was given by using eight components of reading comprehension and recount texts such as main idea, factual information, meaning of difficult word, reference, inference, social function of recount text, generic structures of recount text and language features of recount text. The data were analyzed by classifying them into four levels of ability, such as poor, average, good, and excellent. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of the State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Pekanbaru was at good level with mean score was 66.1.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading comprehension, Recount text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of English Study Program students in identifying passive voice. The population of the study was the second-year students of the English study program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample was 39 participants selected by cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of the research was used a multiple-choice test which consists of 30 items. The instrument of the research consists of 6 tenses of passive voices including the simple present tense, present future tense, simple past tense, present perfect tense, present continuous tense, and modals. After calculating by using a quantitative method, students’ ability was highest in the form of simple present tense with a means score of 73.3 and is categorized into a good level and low score in the form of past tense with a means score of 40.5 and is categorized into a poor level. Overall, the result showed that students’ ability in identifying passive voices was at a mediocre level with mean score was 58. The finding implied that the second-year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau should improve their ability in understanding the formula of passive voices and the kinds of each tense to reach an excellent level.Keyword: Students’ Ability, Identifying, Passive Voices

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of the research was to find out whether there is a significant correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading speed. The subject of this research was the fifth semester students of English Study Program of FKIP UR 2020. This quantitative research used a questionnaire and reading speed tests. The data were collected Online using Google Form. The total number of samples (N) is 36. The average score of reading interest (variable X) is 2429 and the average score of reading speed (variable Y) is 8351. The sum of multiple score of both variables (XY) is 571004.7. The sum of quadrate score of reading interest (X2) is 167525 and the sum of quadrate of reading speed (Y2) is 1985457. Students’ reading speed is categorized into average level with the average score 231.97. The result of the correlation index between variable X and variable Y is 0.57. and this research showed that the correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading speed is in moderate level.Key Words: Correlation, Reading Interest, Reading Speed

Abstract

Abstract: This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability of the Second Year Students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in Writing Descriptive Texts. This study concerns with five aspects of writing. They are grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, organization, and fluency. The aim of this study is to find out the ability level of the second-year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in writing descriptive texts. The data collecting technique is using a writing test. The students’ writing results are checked and scored by the expert. The research findings are as follows: first, the ability of the second-year students in writing descriptive texts is in good level with the average score of 78.81. Second, the students’ average score in terms of Organization is 17.12, and in terms of Contents is 16.21, in terms of Mechanic is 16.27, in terms of Vocabulary is 15.30, and in terms of Grammar is 13.90. based on these findings, it is found that grammar is the most difficult problem faced by the students in writing descriptive texts. All in all, findings show that the the second-year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru have relatively good level in writing descriptive texts. However, they need to practice more in writing a text for the betterment of the study.Key Words: Ability, Descriptive Texts, Writing,

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out how many test items of HOTS in summative tests are prepared by teachers of SMK TELKOM Pekanbaru. The object of this study was the odd and even semester of summative test items of grade X students for the 2022/2023 school year. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The data was gathered through a documentation study, namely the document in the form of a School Examination question sheet. The data were analyzed and categorized based on the C1-C6 thinking level, and then calculated the percentage of questions with the HOTS category based on the formula according to Ali (2013: 201) using Microsoft Excel. The result of the study revealed that there were 43 questions or 45.55%, with details of 22 questions in the odd semester or 48.88% which included C4 (analyze) questions totaling 15 questions, C5 (evaluate) totaling 5 questions, and C6 (create) totaling 2 questions. In the even semester summative test there were 19 questions or 42.22% which included C4 (analyze) questions totaling 13 questions, C5 (evaluate) totaling 4 questions, and C6 (create) totaling 2 question. Abstract

This quantitative descriptive research aimed to find the abilities of the students at one school in Riau Island Province in comprehending narrative texts. The population was 80 students. 28 students were taken as the sample selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was a reading test. The reading test consisted of 5 short narrative texts. Each consists of 8 questions that cover the components of reading such as factual information, main ideas, meaning of certain words, references, and inferences, then the components of narrative texts such as generic structures, language features, and social functions. To analyze the data, the writer calculated the data by using Microsoft Excel 2016. The data analysis showed that the mean score of their ability in comprehending components of reading was 47% while comprehending narrative texts at 53% so their total at 50% and categorized into medium level. The finding of research also showed that the lowest ability for students was in answering questions about finding the meaning of certain words at 43%. It is suggested that students must do more practice in reading, then they should learn more about the eight components of reading comprehension of narrative texts such as factual information, main ideas, vocabulary, references, inferences, generic structure, language features, and social functions. Then learn reading strategy’s such as schema, skimming and scanning.

Abstract

This research investigates the correlation between listening habits to English songs and vocabulary mastery of the first-year English Study Program students of FKIP Universitas Riau. English songs are increasingly popular and serve as an engaging medium for language learning, offering repeated exposure to new vocabulary, improved pronunciation, and contextual understanding of words. Students with developed listening habits to English songs are less likely to feel unfamiliar with new vocabulary due to frequent exposure. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design, utilizing a questionnaire and vocabulary test for data collection. The Pearson Product-Moment formula, processed via SPSS, revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.714, indicating a high correlation. The null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, confirming a significant relationship between the two variables. These findings underscore that there is a high correlation between listening habits to English songs and vocabulary mastery of the first year English Study Program students of FKIP Universitas Riau.

Abstract

This study investigates strategies used by university English department students to overcome their speaking anxiety. It applied an explanatory sequential mixed method. The selected samples of the present study were 71 out of 109 population. Two main instruments used to collect the data were a questionnaire and an interview. The findings indicated that 53 students (3.74) often applied strategies to overcome their speaking anxiety. The result of the quantitative data showed that the overall mean score on the strategy applied by students to overcome speaking anxiety on positive thinking was 3.87, relaxation was 3.98, preparation was 4.05, peer seeking was 3.82, and categorized into high level respectively, while the resignation mean score was 2.99 and categorized into moderate level. Based on the interview results of 10 selected students, they applied five types of strategies above, and some students applied other strategies, such as practicing in front of the mirror and utilizing a learning tool. Since the strategies students apply have overcome their speaking anxiety, students are recommended to implement the above strategies.
