Abstract

Character development is a literary element that refers to the process through which characters are shaped with traits that establish their role and presence within the narrative world. This research aims to analyze the character development of Jinx in Arcane Season one (2021) using film theories by Petrie Boggs, with a particular focus on identifying the irony that shapes. A descriptive qualitative approach is used due to the use of narrative structure, visuals, and dialogue. The study identifies six key moments in Jinx’s development across episodes 1 to 9. Each moment is marked by a specific type of irony: dramatic irony, irony of situation, irony of character, irony of setting, irony of tone, and cosmic irony. This irony serves to deepen the audience’s understanding of her complex identity shift from Powder to Jinx. This study concludes that Arcane constructs Jinx’s character development as an ironic tragedy. Each ironic turn in the story underscores the tension between who Jinx was, how others perceived her, and who she chooses to become.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of keroncong music as a medium for building and strengthening the values of patriotism, nationalism, and diversity harmony in Indonesia. Keroncong music, which was first introduced by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, underwent a process of acculturation until it became an integral part of Indonesian cultural identity. During the colonial period, this genre of music was used as a symbolic tool of resistance that ignited the spirit of struggle and nationalism. With its touching lyrics and melodious tunes, keroncong became a means for the Indonesian people to express their love for their homeland and national identity. Songs such as “Bengawan Solo,” “Melati di Tapal Batas,” and “Rayuan Pulau Kelapa” became powerful symbols of patriotism and played an important role in the Indonesian independence movement. Postcolonial literary criticism was applied to understand how colonial and nationalist elements interacted in keroncong music, as well as how keroncong helped reconstruct postcolonial national identity in Indonesia. The results of the study show that keroncong music not only serves as entertainment but also as a symbol of struggle that reflects Indonesia's national identity. As an adaptive form of music, keroncong has successfully maintained its relevance by incorporating local elements and themes that reflect Indonesia's socio-political dynamics. In its lyrics, keroncong conveys messages rich in national values and diversity, capable of embracing all layers of Indonesian society, from various ethnicities, religions, and social backgrounds. The value of patriotism in keroncong music emerges through themes of struggle, love for the homeland, and pride as an independent nation. Nationalism in keroncong is further strengthened by the use of local language and idioms, as well as the incorporation of traditional cultural elements deeply rooted in Indonesian society.

Abstract

This research explores the use of irony in the film 500 Days of Summer (2009), directed by Mark Webb. Unlike typical romance films, this movie presents a non-linear narrative and avoids the usual happy ending, making it a rich subject for irony analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study identifies and explains different types of irony found in the film, including dramatic, situational, verbal, etc. These ironic moments are key to understanding the development of the main character, Tom Hansen, whose expectations about love often clash with reality. Scenes such as “Expectations vs. Reality” and the unexpected meeting with Autumn illustrate how irony shapes the story and reflects Tom’s emotional journey. The findings show that irony is a powerful narrative device that adds depth to the film, challenges traditional ideas about romance, and helps the audience connect more deeply with the character’s experience. This study highlights how irony can be used in film to reveal personal growth and present a more realistic view of love.

Abstract

This research examines how irony is conveyed through long shot cinematography in Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (2023). Using Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie’s six types of irony such as dramatic, situational, character, setting, tone, and cosmic as the main framework, the research analyzes how these forms manifest visually through cinematic language. Set in the domestic sphere of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, the film employs visual distance and static framing to juxtapose everyday normalcy with atrocities occurring beyond the frame. Adopting a qualitative descriptive method, and drawing on theories from Mario Klarer and Gustavo Mercado, the analysis reveals that long shots function not only to emphasize physical and emotional detachment but also to heighten ironic contrast between visual calm and unseen violence. This creates a compelling visual irony that confronts viewers with the moral indifference and normalized evil within the setting. The research contributes to broader discussions on how irony in films can represent historical trauma through indirect yet deeply affective cinematic strategies.

This research attempts to examine the adventure aspect that focuses on the storyline in the popular movie "Mad Max: Fury Road" directed by George Miller, released in 2015. The film shows a hero successfully completing a dangerous mission with fairly short but effective dialog to convey the intended message while advancing the story. Therefore, the researcher poses an analysis question which is how the adventure storyline is built in the movie of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). To achieve the outcome of the question, this research identifies the adventure aspects that build the story by using the main formula theory by Sarick (2009). The method used in this research is qualitative method. The researcher uses dialog and character scenes as data to get results. From the results of the study, the researcher found 3 data which are the boundaries between the beginning of the movie, the middle of the movie, and the end of the storyline of the movie. The conclusion of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road can be understood that the adventure plot is very simple but gives a tense impression and although various obstacles are encountered during the travel process, the adventure narrative includes the ability to successfully survive and overcome dangerous circumstances involving physical, human, and animal risks, as well as the need to escape and pass through dangerous predicaments.

Abstract

Masculinity is the characteristics that are traditionally thought to be typical of or suitable for men. This research attempts to discuss a character's masculinity in The Barbie 2023 Film. To specify the research, the researcher divided this analysis into two research questions, they are: 1) What are the elements of masculinity depicted in The 2023 Barbie Film? 2) How is the depiction of stereotypical masculinity in The 2023 Barbie Film? Masculinity in Barbie 2023 is very interesting to discuss because it can be identified from various elements contained in the film, in this case the identification of masculinity can be seen from how the characters in this film behave, the instrinsic elements implied in the film, the setting, and also other things that illustrate how the elements of masculinity are contained in the film. The results of this study found two findings, namely the first is what elements of masculinity are found in this film in the form of how the character Ken has an athletic posture that strongly shows elements of masculinity and in several scenes in the film shows masculinity, then the findings of other stereotypes of masculinity that the author managed to identify from the dialog, character acting, setting, or atmosphere that is contained in this film.

Abstract

Abstract

Randomly oriented chopped sugar palm fiber (SPF)-reinforced epoxy and –reinforced polyester has successfully been fabricated, and their compressive and impact properties have been evaluated. Prior to being used as reinforcement, the SPF was alkali-treated and chopped into ~20 mm long. Specimens were cut from a composite plate panel fabricated by means of cold-pressed molding. Compressive and impact tests were carried out according to the AASTM D3410 and ASTM D5410, respectively. It was found that compressive strength and strain-to-failure of SPF/epoxy samples were lower than those of the SFP/polyester samples, but to the contrary, compressive modulus of the SPF/epoxy samples were higher than that of the SPF/polyester samples. Impact toughness of SPF/epoxy specimens was found being higher than that of the SPF/polyester specimens.
