Abstract

Abstract

Layar Tanjleb, the flagship program of the Purbalingga Film Festival (FFP) since 2007, offers an alternative form of entertainment resembling traditional open-air cinema. Initiated by Bowo Leksono, a former Jakarta journalist and founder of the Cinema Lovers Community (CLC), the program aims to promote film culture in Purbalingga. Its first film, “Orang Buta dan Penuntunnya” (2004), sparked mobile film screenings for high school students starting in 2005. Layar Tanjleb organizes free open-air screenings, showcasing fiction and documentary films by young directors, including works in the local Javanese Ngapak dialect. This study explores the evolution of Layar Tanjleb as a digital-era form of entertainment and its impacts on the creative economy as well as socio-cultural aspects. Using historical methods (heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, historiography) combined with interviews, observations, and literature review, the research demonstrates how Tanjleb strengthens local identity. The findings reveal that, to date, Tanjleb has screened 858 films and reached more than 135,000 viewers. The program has proven effective in reinforcing community bonds, promoting cultural pride, and stimulating growth. Layar Tanjleb is not merely entertainment, but also a medium of cultural education, local identity promotion, and a driving force of the creative economy ecosystem in Purbalingga.

Abstract

This research examines the role of jeans as a symbol of social resistance in student demonstrations in Jakarta in 1970-1998. Initially seen as an icon of modernity and globalization, jeans over time became an identity for students and activists who opposed the repressive policies of the New Order. During the 1974 Malari Demonstrations, students wore jeans as a form of criticism against economic dependence on foreign capital, and signaled their solidarity with workers affected by ongoing economic injustice. During the 1998 Reformation, jeans reappeared as a symbol of resistance against the Soeharto government, which was considered authoritarian and corrupt. This research uses a historical research method with a social history approach. The research process includes collecting data sources (heuristics), analyzing data validity (source criticism), interpreting the symbolic meaning of jeans, and compiling historical narratives (historiography). By referring to Sartono Kartodirdjo's concept of social history, the results of this study show that material culture, such as jeans, is not only part of the lifestyle, but also a form of political expression tool in the student movement. The existence of this research can confirm that clothing can also play a role in shaping collective identity and voicing aspirations for social change in society.

Abstract

During the period of 1999-2019, the Nadran tradition in the Gunung Jati sub-district, Cirebon Regency, underwent various changes. This tradition, which comprises three processions Sedekah Laut, Sedekah Bumi, and Arak-arakan was the focus of a historical study aimed at understanding its meaning for the local community and its development over time. The research, which utilized primary and secondary sources along with historical methodology (heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography), found that the tradition faced several challenges, including disputes among participants, a lack of security, and limited funding. Despite these difficulties, the community continued to hold the Nadran tradition as a means of cultural preservation and an expression of gratitude.
