Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic situation made the government announce the use of e-learning. With this policy, teachers are expected to apply interesting media to be studied. This research aimed to find out whether or not Quizizz Game could improve students’ vocabulary mastery and the supporting and inhibiting factors of the success of Quizizz Game implementation. It was a collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of this research was grade VIII-C of MTs Ibnu Rosyad in the academic year of 2020/2021 which consisted of 20 students. This research was conducted in two cycles which each consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data were gathered through qualitative and quantitative data. The results of this research showed that there was improvement from cycle 1 to cycle 2. It can be seen from the mean score of pre-test were 53, the mean score of post-test 1 was 69 and the mean score of post-test 2 was 84. The students' attention and motivation also helped use of Quizizz. But, limited school facilities and wifi become the obstruction

Abstract

Investigation of online English learning is implemented in Jombang. This study aims to determine the online learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the inhibiting factors in the implementation of online learning are the lack of parental support, few students who have smartphones, student laziness and lack of motivation to learn, difficult to control and evaluate student assignments. While the supporting factors obtained by the teacher when carrying out online learning are more online learning materials, time and place efficiency, and learning materials can be stored safely on smartphones. This research was conducted with descriptive methods and data collection techniques by interviewing English teachers. The result of the research is the implementation of online English learning in one of the elementary schools in Jombang, using the WhatsApp application as an online learning medium. Submission of materials and assignments is done through the WhatsApp group media.

Abstract

The students of class VII of one of state junior high schools in Jombang got difficulty in their descriptive writing class so that their ability to write was low. It was caused by the monotonous teaching strategy used by the English teacher in their writing class. So that the researchers are interested in conducting a study by implementing PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply and End) strategy for teaching writing in that class. The purposes of this study were to know: 1) the students’ writing ability before being taught using PLEASE; 2) the students’ writing ability after being taught using PLEASE and 3) the effectiveness of PLEASE for teaching writing. This study used a pre-experimental research design with the population of all the students in class VII consisting of students. Meanwhile, the sample was 29 students of class VII B taken by a purposive sampling. The data were collected from the pre-test and post-test of writing descriptive texts. The data were analysed using a statistical descriptive and a paired-sample t-test. The results of this study showed that: 1) the students’ writing ability before using PLEASE strategy was low with the average score of 57, 2) the students’ writing ability after using PLEASE strategy was excellent with the average score of 86 and 3) the use of PLEASE strategy was effective for teaching writing with the significant score of sig. (2-tailed) was o.ooo. Based on the results of this study, the researchers hope that the Engish teachers and students implement PLEASE strategy in their writing classes.

Abstract

The students’ uninterest in joining their speaking class caused their low speaking skills. They were not interested because the strategy used by the English teacher when teaching was not interesting. Therefore, the researchers used Pecha Kucha strategy to teach them speaking in this present study. The objectives of this study were to know: (1) the students’ speaking skills before being taught using Pecha Kucha, (2) the students’ speaking skills after being taught using Pecha Kucha and (3) whether or not there was any significant effectiveness of using Pecha Kucha for teaching speaking. This pre-experimental study used a one group pre-test post-test design. This study was conducted in one of state junior high schools located in Diwek, Jombang, Indonesia. The population of this research was class VIII of that school. They consisted of 256 students. Meanwhile, the sample was class VIII B comprising of 32 students. This sample was taken using a purposive sampling. The instruments used for collecting the data were the pre-test and post-test. After the data were collected, the researchers analysed the data using statistical descriptive and a paired-sample t-test. The results indicated that: (1) the students’ speaking skills before the implementation of Pecha Kucha was low, (2) the students’ speaking skills after the implementation of Pecha Kucha was excellent and (3) Pecha Kucha was effective for teaching speaking. It is highly recommended that the students and the English teachers use Pecha Kucha in their speaking classes.
