Abstract

This study focuses on the integration of Indonesian traditional music education at the elementary school level as a strategy for promoting culture in Indonesia. It recognizes the significance of social capital, cultural capital, and knowledge capital as the foundation for fostering a comprehensive and systematic approach to cultural development. The research employs interview, observation, and literature review methods to gather data, guided by three key questions: (1) the current state of traditional music teaching in Indonesian elementary schools, (2) the strategies employed in integrating traditional music education, and (3) the outcomes of the Archipelago Traditional Music pre-congress in 2021 within the paradigm of elementary school music education. The analysis is primarily based on the implementation of previous policies and programs, particularly those managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study's findings reveal several important aspects, including: (1) the need for statutory regulations supporting the conservation of traditional music programs, (2) fostering active collaboration between teachers and traditional artists or musicians through open participation, (3) providing necessary facilities and infrastructure to create an ecosystem conducive to traditional music education at the elementary school level, (4) implementing training programs to enhance the traditional music competence of elementary school teachers, and (5) involving the traditional music community in the design of the curriculum for traditional music education in elementary schools. These results underscore the importance of integrating traditional music education at the elementary school level to promote Indonesian culture. By implementing the suggested strategies, policymakers and educators can contribute to the preservation and development of traditional music, creating a stronger cultural foundation within Indonesian society.

Abstract

If the study of Jesse Fewkes and Frances Densmore in the late 19th century is taken into account, western Applied Ethnomusicology is entering its second century. After more than one hundred years of development, Applied Ethnomusicology has basically become a relatively mature research path in the West, which not only provides scholars with a new research perspective but also enriches the subject connotation of Ethnomusicology to a certain extent with its research philosophy and value pursuit. In China, Applied Ethnomusicology has attracted more and more attention. Therefore, reviewing the development history of the discipline is not only conducive to clarifying the development context of the discipline but also conducive to reflecting on the current problems and better grasping the development trend of the discipline. In the first part of this paper, the factors influencing the birth and development of applied ethnomusicology are further discussed from within and outside the discipline, respectively based on consulting relevant literature and briefly summarizing the existing discussions of scholars. The second part mainly discusses the research characteristics of Applied Ethnomusicology, such as "pragmatic orientation", "change of researcher's identity", and "emphasis on intervention and intervention". The third part of the Applied Ethnomusicology on the "intervention", "the definition of" discipline "and the edge of two issues are discussed.

Abstract

This essay is the outcome of a study on the Ruwat Murwakala, a traditional cleaning event for humans of sukerta that also serves as a backdrop for Javanese culture and religion. Although it is a religious activity, the ceremony serves as a moral education for society by conveying several symbols of worth. The mantra, one of the key components of the murwakala ceremony, is the subject of this investigation. This study used semiotic analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure's model and qualitative research methods. According to de Saussure, this symbol or sign can be understood through the idea of the relationship between the signifier and the signified. Reading the four fundamental mantras is the most important part of the ritual in Ruwat Murwakala's tale since it serves as a means of overcoming Bathara Kala. The primary methods for gathering data for this study were interviews and literature reviews. Direct observation and audio-visual recordings of the observation item were also used to obtain data. After then, the triangulation method was used to examine all of the data. The findings indicated that the four primary mantras chanted by the dalang during the Ruwat Murwakala procedure have symbolic meanings that include moral instruction about the tenets of human behaviour. This study examines educational resources from local traditional literature sources to demonstrate the significance of the idea of culture-based moral education. The findings of this study aid in the creation of community-wide moral education resources using an artistic and cultural perspective.

Abstract

Classifying the geographic origin of music is a relevant task in music information retrieval, yet most studies have focused on genre or style recognition rather than regional origin. This study evaluates Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models on the UCI Geographical Origin of Music dataset (1,059 tracks from 33 non-Western regions) using numerical audio features. To incorporate latent structure, we first applied K-means clustering with the optimal number of clusters (k=2) determined by the Elbow and Silhouette methods. The cluster assignments were used as auxiliary signals for training, while evaluation relied on the true region labels. Classification performance was assessed with Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1-score. Results show that SVM achieved 99.53% accuracy (95% CI: 97.38–99.92%), while CNN reached 98.58% accuracy (95% CI: 95.92–99.52%); Precision, Recall, and F1 mirrored these values. The differences confirm SVM’s superior performance on this dataset, though the near-perfect scores also suggest strong separability in the feature space and potential risks of overfitting. Learning-curve analysis indicated stable training, and cluster supervision provided small but consistent benefits. Overall, SVM remains a reliable baseline for tabular music features, while CNNs may require spectro-temporal representations to leverage their full potential. Future work should validate these findings across multiple datasets, apply cross-validation with statistical significance testing, and explore hybrid deep models for broader generalization.
