Abstract

This research focused on the implementation of blended learning through the platform of English Discoveries to analyze the relationship between blended learning to take an effort to improve self-regulated learning and learning outcomes in speaking skill. This research used a qualitative approach. The subjects were 20 students of the second semester in speaking class at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. The result showed that the implementation of blended learning model can improve self-regulated learning and learning outcomes in speaking skill. Therefore the blended model can be implemented successfully.

Abstract

Speaking is a main tool of communication to others. Many people are difficult to speak English. It is caused by some factors such as need of information, less frequent of practice, low self-confidence, and so on. This research aimed to describe developing students’ speaking ability through story completion. Story Completion is very enjoyable in free-speaking activity where students sit in a circle (Kayi, 2006). There are three objectives of the research were to describe: (1) To describe the implementation of story completion in teaching speaking. (2)  To describe the improvement of speaking skill for students after being given story completion. (3) To describe the students’ response to the implementation of story completion. Descriptive qualitative was applied as the method of the research while the observation was conducted to obtain the data to answer the first research about how are the implementation of story completion. The result showed that the technique of story completion was successfully implemented to improve the students’ speaking skill. The technique can make students to encourage themselves to speak up. They have to be brave and have enough self-confident when they want to talk something.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the type of English learning strategies as foreign language used by athlete students and to analyse on how to use language learning strategies in learning English as foreign language to their achievement in English speaking skill. This research was conducted on six athlete students in Sport Language Center of Surabaya who are able to speak English in International Competition. The data for this research were taken from observation and filling up questionnaire analysis. It can be concluded that language learning strategies in learning English as foreign language for the students were very useful and helpful. The learning strategies are believed to be responsible for successful language acquisition and significant in language learning. Thus, in learning English as a foreign language, appropriate language learning strategies were significant. Athlete students who are swimmers in Sport Language Center needed to know how to learn, and swimmer coach needed to know how to facilitate his process in teaching English. Hopefully this research can also inspire other researcher who are interested in conducting research on other aspects of language learning strategies. Abstract

This research was design in descriptive qualitative research to find the students’ motivation in online learning English. The data was collected and analyzed from several related of literature on the application of videos in the short videos of Instagram Reels. This research aimed that the video Reels as media can make students more enjoyed process teaching and learning. It seems using videos can give a relaxing situation for students in learning English. It also can make students more active and easy to understand the material since the video contains pictures and audio that causes students to see the material directly. The subjects were the second semester of students in Intensive English Course as the EFL Classroom. The teaching and learning activities in the class which are seems divided into three steps, e.g., Pre-activity, main activity, and activity of the last post. The analysis recommends the lecturer, as a model should have planning systematically what Lecturer should do during teaching and learning process to deliver good material in online class.

Abstract

The ability to communicate verbally is considered to be one of the important factors for basic language skills. This competency plays a significant role in oral communication. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the use of a model called Problem-Based Learning (PBL) might help students enhance their speaking ability. PBL is one of the learning models that can be used in language classes because the focus of the learning model is involving students in the learning process. The PBL model encourages meaningful interactions for the working students who study in part-time class as the special program. Since the students must be trained to practice speaking English. Therefore, speaking competence can be achieved through the activities. Observation and a questionnaire were the two techniques that were used to collect the data. The results showed that the PBL model used by the lecturer in the teaching and learning process that focuses on the discussion to get the alternative solution deeply can make students understand every detail in practicing speaking with real-life issues that require real-life solutions. Thus, this study implied that PBL as a learning model for English subjects was appropriate to make students fluent to communicate in English

Abstract

Learning source is one of essential learning aspects for learning foreign or second language. Using learning sources is hoped to be able to enable learners increase the learners’ language mastery exclusively in terms of vocabulary. The learning sources especially reading materials used in the teaching learning activity must be designed for accomplishing lexical units needed by the learners based on the learning objectives, satisfactory vocabulary in the relations of number and range. This research aims to evaluate whether the learning materials especially reading materials of the textbook, Developing English Competencies 3 fulfill can the learners’ need on vocabulary acquisition. A descriptive quantitative study with the specific linguistic field, corpus was designed for this research. RANGE and FREQUENCY, a computational device as instruments created by Nation in 2001 and then, advanced by Heatley, Nation, and Coxhead in 2002 was used to count the lexical units. By comparing to general frequency list, Michael West’s GSL (1953), it was found that the book was accomplishing the lexical needed by the learners of high school level in vocabulary quantity and range in the reading materials because of the amount of 5,064 tokens and 1,434 types only with the unfair distribution based on Nation ‘s three ranges. In brief, the book looks like very distant from the frame of the learners’ needs. In addition, it is restricted to propose the possible comprehensive situations where the learners can present in the daily communication.

Abstract

Listening is one of the important activities in learning that can obtain information. Based on the phenomenon that students have difficulty in learning English, especially in listening skills because many students have difficulty in listening comprehension clearly. Moreover, they feel bored because of the teaching and learning process without using interactive media. The purpose of this research found out the implementation of the listening comprehension learning process in intensive English class of the Language Center by using the Spotify media as an interactive learning media and students' responses in using of the Spotify media.   The researchers used three instruments in this research that were observation, questionnaire, and interview. Qualitative method was used by researchers to analyze descriptive data. The results showed that the students were interested when the lecturer used the Spotify media as part of the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the students responded positively to the use of the Spotify media. The results of the analysis showed that the using of Spotify media by the lecturer in the learning process of listening to understanding is very pleasant and students are easier to understand English in listening skill. Since they can use the Spotify anywhere and anytime that was as the new experience in learning English for their daily activities

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the usage of the Canva media utility to enhance students' writing abilties. Researchers used a quantitative method that's a pre-experimental research design by making use of pre-test and post-test.  Written exams are used to gather scholar fulfillment as an tool of this studies. The researchers used two classes in the 9th grade of junior high school as research samples. Abstract

Dalam penelitian ini, siswa masih membuat beberapa kesalahan dalam menulis teks narasi. Kesalahan gramatikaltersebut disebut error analysis dalam tenses, klausa, kata kerja, kata ganti, koma, atau dalam apostrophes. Parasiswa terkadang tidak menyadari bahwa mereka melakukan kesalahan karena ketidaktahuan tata bahasa.  Para siswaterkadang memiliki banyak kesulitan dalam menggunakan bentuk kata dalam bahasa Inggris. Kurang kosakata jugamempengaruhi siswa untuk meningkatkan kalimat mereka seperti perbedaan antara kata kerja regular danirregular.Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sebuah desainpenelitian yang mengumpulkan informasi mengenai fenomena saat ini. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukanuntuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan siswa dalam penggunaan gramatikal bentuk past tense, mengklasifikasikankesalahan ke dalam beberapa jenis dan menyelidiki penyebab kesalahan. Data yang digambarkan berasal dari teksnarasi yang dibuat oleh siswa kelas 7 SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surabaya. Data berupa kata-kata.Dapat disimpulkanbahwa siswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menerapkan simple past tense.Kata kunci: Error analysis, Teks Narasi, Siswa SMP
