Abstract

Technological advancements are profoundly impacting education, particularly in the selection of learning media. Appropriate utilization of learning media can make learning easier and more effective. Language acquisition in children typically begins when they first begin to speak words independently. However, autistic children may struggle with acquiring new languages and demonstrating school readiness skills such as social, emotional, language, literacy, and executive functioning due to their individual social, communication, and behavioral presentations. This research aims to determine the implementation of YouTube as a medium for toddlers with autistic spectrum disorder in second language acquisition. The method used is qualitative with the instruments used are questionnaire, observation, and interview. The research subject was 5 autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) students at the Smart Kids School. The researchers did a questionnaire with 5 respondents as the parents of kindergarten students. The researchers also interviewed the teachers of the kindergarten. There were 5 questions to answer, which were described based on the respondents’ opinions. The research results show the process of implementing YouTube in English learning for autistic spectrum disorder students is appropriate and advantageous. Because YouTube provides exciting videos for children; they can hear the words spoken and see their physical appearance, which can aid comprehension. The children often imitate the dialogue of the characters they see on screen and their behavior. In addition, this research also showed that it is crucial for parents and teachers to monitor the content children watch on YouTube.

Abstract

After the covid-19 pandemic, everything was online, including learning. Teachers no longer have to always race on books in the learning process, they can take advantage of technology that is smartphones. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out how Duolingo application is implemented on 10th grade’ students along with the students’ response. Duolingo itself is a learning app that has the highest rating in the education field on the Appstore. This application provides various features and also integrated skills such as 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), then pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Since the previous study was only discussed vocabulary, the writer conducts writing skill for this study. Through this application, teachers will be easier to introduce various vocabulary for students to write descriptive text. In addition, students also become more interested in learning English and the learning process in the classroom is not boring anymore. This study analyzed teaching and learning process using descriptive qualitative method with 3 instruments those were observation, questionnaire and interview. It is stated that, based on the result of observation was the students became very enthusiastic and excited in the learning process of writing descriptive text in the classroom. Besides that, it is stated from the results of the questionnaire could be concluded that the students felt helping by the Duolingo application for learning vocabulary in writing descriptive text, and this application was also easily accessible.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how children experience violence. Some factors are highlighted to affect this issue including family dysfunction, economic, and misperceptions on how these children to be educated. This research used a qualitative approach involving some descriptive analysis. Results found that residents specifically children who live in slum and populated area potentially have more violent experiences. These probably relate to physical, psychological or emotional, and verbal. Children with poorly educated and uneducated parents, unemployed, less knowledge on religious practices potentially experience the violence. Further, children whose young parents and from a big family would have a bad experiences in the past since they had a very limited attention from their parent.Keywords: child violence, social factors, demography

Abstract

The TikTok application is a social media platform that allows users to upload and edit videos using a variety of features to create content as desired. Its accessibility via mobile phones means that it can be used for online learning anywhere and anytime, effectively functioning as a mobile learning (m-learning) tool. This research focused on utilizing TikTok as a medium to enhance speaking skills in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This study employed a qualitative approach to explore the effectiveness of TikTok in improving students' English speaking skills. Data for the research were collected through observations and questionnaires. The study involved 20 students from the Marine Engineering program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya. Through careful analysis of the collected data, the research aimed to determine the impact of TikTok on students' speaking abilities. The results indicated that using TikTok as a medium significantly improved speaking skills in the EFL classroom. Students showed enhanced proficiency in their spoken English, attributed to the engaging and interactive nature of the platform. The study concluded that TikTok is an effective tool for improving students' speaking skills in English as a foreign language. Therefore, incorporating TikTok into EFL instruction can successfully enhance students' speaking abilities, making it a valuable resource for language educators.

Abstract

Integration of technology in education, particularly through platforms like English Discoveries, has transformed language learning practices at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya. English Discoveries provides a multimedia-based English learning platform that supports the development of comprehensive language skills. This study aim to describe teachers' perspectives on the English Discoveries platform, identify the types of challenges teachers face in implementing the English Discoveries platform, and find out the solutions provided by teachers in overcoming challenges in implementing digital literacy on the English Discoveries platform. This mix method study explores the perspectives of 7 teachers implementing the English Discoveries platform as learning media. Through questionnaires and interviews as the instruments of this study, teachers' experiences and opinions were collected, revealing insights into their perceptions of platform usability, impact on student engagement, and improvement of English language skills. Findings of this research highlight that teachers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya have a positive perspective on the English Discoveries platform, with many supporting its use in the learning process because of the convenience it offers, such as online presence and digital checking of assignments. Nonetheless, they faced several challenges in implementing this platform, including sudden logout issues, the need for a very stable internet connection, and excessive feature complexity. To overcome these challenges, the teachers suggested the need for better support from platform managers, feature simplification, and a reliable data backup system to maintain data security and continuity, as well as ensure the platform supports various devices well. In summary, English Discoveries enhances learning, engages students, and improves teaching efficiency despite technical challenges.

Abstract

This research analyzed about the using of turn-taking as the strategy in the radio talk show at Hard Rock FM in the topic Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, the guest was Myra Brown. It was analyzed because the researcher considered that turn-taking was one of strategies of language. The research approach was descriptive qualitative. It  identified the types of turn-taking, the speakers’ strategies, some reasons that the speakers took the turn, and the relation among the speakers after they took the turn. The main theories that the researcher used were discourse analysis by Gee (2011), turn-taking by Renkema (2004), and context by van Dijk (2009). This research discovered that there were three types of turn taking. They are speaker’s selection, speaker’s self choice, and speaker’s determination. Strategies that are used by the speakers, they are overlap, interruption, back-channel, and silence. One of the reasons that the speakers took the turn was that the hosts dig information from the guest related with the topic.

Abstract

This research explored the possible meaning of the metaphor in the poem of Maya Angelou. The researcher focused on metaphor forms found as the object to be analyzed in Maya Angelou’s poems. Metaphor is one part of figurative languages which is the most common and widely used in literary works such as poem. Poem is a media for a poet to express feeling and imagination based on condition of a poet’s life. The data of this research were Caged Bird and Still I Rise poems by Maya Angelou. This research used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The purpose of this research was to find out the type of metaphor based on Crystal, Lakoff and Johnson theory, know the reasons of the use of metaphor, and interpret the poem meaning based on explication and author’s biography. It was found that Maya Angelou used three types of live metaphor they are Conceptual metaphor, Mixed metaphor and Poetic metaphor. It was also found that each poem tells about the author’s personal opinion about the racial inequality between black races and white races in America at that time.

Abstract

This study was about phonological acquisition, especially on phonological process theory by David Ingram. It focused on the consonant word production by three two-year-old Indonesian children. The researchers applied qualitative research methods and the data were taken from the three Indonesian children’s speech in naturalistic conversation. Based on the data analysis and interpretation, the researchers found that not all of Ingram’s phonological processes occur in the subjects’ word production. There were nine from twelve processes. In addition, the researchers also found four other phonological processes which did not reflect Ingram’s theory and there were still several sounds which were not acquired yet by the subjects at the end of her research.

Abstract

This study is sociolinguistics. It focuses on register used by the workers of PT. Multi Duta Utari. In productionDepartment, workers in PT. Multi Duta Utari, used register in context with their occupation. They use registerwhen they communicated in location production department of PT. Multi Duta Utari. The data taken are from inthe two statements, there are what are the type of the register used by the workers of PT. Multi Duta Utari, andwhy do the workers use such as the register. There are the objectives of the study that must be answered: (1)Toidentify the registers used by the workers in company of PT. Multi Duta Utari (2)To describe the reasons whythe workers use such registers. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected from thesources including the subject and the place from the collecting data analysis, and triangulation. Finally, thewriter hopes that the finding will be useful to enrich our insight of sociolinguistics.

Abstract

 In learning English as Foreign Language, there are many background factors that play important roles to be success in learning. In the case of foreign students who study English in non-English speaking country, these factors become more complex. This study aims to analyze the background factors of Thai students’ speaking achievement and the different background factors between student’s high and low scores of speaking achievement. This study used mixed method design as method of study. The theories of factors were used to answer the objective of this research such as self-esteem, inhibition, risk-taking, anxiety, empathy, extroversion, introversion, motivation, attitude, language exposure, and social situation. The subject was five students from Thailand who studied at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. The finding was that each of students mostly possessed different background factors. However, their intensity and ability were different among of them. All of those factors were greatly influence their acquiring of TEFL as well. There were two students who had the highest and lowest scores in their speaking achievement after several years they have learned English in Indonesia. The different background factors between both of them were self-esteem, inhibition, risk-taking, anxiety, extroversion, introversion, attitude, and social situation factors. Their background factors in speaking were supported by many factors to reach a good achievement. Therefore, the factors mainly play important roles to tend students learning foreign language successfully.Â
