Abstract

The application of composite membranes consisting of SiO2 from the volcanic ash of Mount Sinabung, TiO2, and PVA on a laboratory scale has been investigated to improve the Silau River’s water quality in Asahan Regency. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal combination of SiO2, TiO2, and PVA for treating river water to minimize its heavy metal content and color intensity to achieve clean water requirements. The membranes were prepared by drop-casting with varied compositions of PVA/40TiO2/60SiO2, PVA/60TiO2/40SiO2, PVA/80TiO2/20SiO2, and PVA/100TiO2/0SiO2. PVA was dissolved in aquadest, mixed with SiO2 and TiO2, then imprinted and dried for 24 h at 50 °C. A photocatalyst test was performed on each composition variation to see how the Silau River water’s color changed over time. The PVA/80TiO2/20SiO2 membrane’s composition fluctuated the highest during photocatalyst testing, with 45.95% degradation. The parameter results on the Silau River water test, namely turbidity, color, and chromium values, were reduced by photocatalysis of a PVA/80TiO2/20SiO2 composite membrane to 16 NTU, 30 TCU, and 0.013 mg/L, respectively. These results met the clean water quality criteria specified by Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Decree No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990.

Abstract

Schrödinger equation is a wave equation that describes the behaviour of an electron including determining its energy levels. However, when the motion of electrons was assumed as relativistic motion(vc), then the schrödinger equation must be changed into Klein-Gordon equation(relativistic Schrödinger equation). In order to compare both equations, we analyzed and visualized the Klein-Gordon equation for an electron in a potential well with Wolfram Mathematica 10 software. The visualization from Mathematica 10 gave the same wavefunction graphs and probability density graphs as the Schrödinger equation. The difference is only in the visualization of energy levels graphs. Keywords:Klein-Gordon equation, Mathematica 10, electron, energy levels.

Abstract

Abstract: Carbon dots (CDs) have been widely used in various applications, one of them being metal ion sensing. Synthesizing CDs with sensing characteristics is influenced by two factors, i.e., precursor and dopant agent. This study aims to use bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi) with N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a nitrogen source to synthesize CDs via the hydrothermal method. The result of hydrothermal showed significant colors of CDs with and without the presence of nitrogen, and these behaviors were also confirmed by the differential absorption of the CDs, with λmax of absorption at 291 nm. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of functional groups related to CDs, such as C-H, C=H, C=N, C=O, C-O-C, and NH2. Meanwhile, emission spectra displayed fluorescent emission at λmax 495 nm (DMF 2%) and 491 nm (DMF 4%). The ion metal sensing test showed that these two samples with 2% and 4% of DMF were sensitive to Fe3+ and Hg2+ sensing. These characteristics concluded that NCDs from bilimbi juice via hydrothermal method were able in sensing metal ions, such as Fe3+ and Hg2+.Abstrak: Karbon dots (CDs) telah banyak diterapkan pada berbagai penggunaan, salah satunya adalah sebagai alat pendeteksi ion logam.

Abstract

Chicken, and beef each have a distinctive aroma. Identification of Chicken and beef based on the aroma of the meat using an electronic nose. This electronic nose uses a series of sensors consisting of 6 (six) pieces and uses a Conducting Polymer. This polymer has a high resistance so it is widely used as an insulator. However, this resistance has a certain limit where the polymer surface will turn into carbon and conduct electric current if exposed to excessive electric charge. This research was conducted by taking samples of chicken and beef as test samples where these meats were placed in a closed container at room temperature. Data is taken alternately every day to find out the odor of each meat where on the first day data is taken from the odor of chicken, and on the second day data is taken from the odor of beef. This condition is done to ensure the freshness of each meat. This study uses a Neural Network (NN) as pattern recognition and ATMega16 microcontroller as data acquisition. Neural Network is trained using Kohonen. The sensor used is a Conducting Polymer sensor because of the nature of the Conducting Polymer where the output is a voltage generated due to changes in the polymer resistance resistance. A two-layer neural network consisting of six input nodes and three output neurons is trained using the Kohonen algorithm with the training process completed in 31 iterations. The test was carried out 30 times for each exposure to steam from the odor of chicken and beef which was carried out alternately. The percentage of success of the system is 100%.

Abstract

Tourism is one of the economic sectors that is developing relatively rapidly and has the potential to become a source of foreign exchange due to an increase in the number of tourists. Caldera Toba Geopark is one of the UNESCO-owned Geoparks in Indonesia as a tourist destination that depends on natural potential to be vulnerable to climate change. The relationship between climate and tourism from the comfort index is needed in determining tourist comfort. Climate parameters that become the calculation of the climate comfort index such as air temperature, rainfall, wind speed, length of sunshine and cloud cover are part of the thermal, physical and aesthetic aspects of climate comfort weighting. Climate projection data in this study is the RCP 4.5 scenario with the ACCESS 1-3 model. Using the TCI and HCI methods, the results of the temporal pattern analysis on the climate comfort index for the period 2031-2050 have a 'Bimodal - Shoulder Peak' distribution pattern. Based on the results of the spatial pattern analysis, the level of tourist climate comfort for the period 2031-2050 both with TCI and HCI methods is dominated by the comfortable category index where the peak comfort occurs in December with a very comfortable category. The lowest comfort level with the TCI method occurs in June in the comfortable category, while the HCI method in July with a comfortable category. In the end, the results of this study provide recommendations for the best tourist time in the Caldera Toba Geopark from September to December. The recommended geosite locations are Simanindo - Batu Hoda and Hutatinggi - Sidihoni geosites.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a large area of oil palm plantations, so there are many factories for the production of cooking oil. Indonesian people use a lot of cooking oil because processed food in Indonesia is mostly fried which causes a lot of used cooking oil to be wasted. The purpose of this study was to determine the resistivity of used cooking oil on the quality of palm cooking oil which can be useful in the field of renewable energy and reduce environmental pollution due to excessive waste of palm cooking oil which can cause damage to aquatic ecosystems, pollute the soil, and cause health problems. Used cooking oil can be processed properly so it is not harmful to the environment and health. One of the steps in processing used cooking oil is to know its resistivity value as the beginning of the refining process. Used cooking oil has a resistivity value that contrasts with soil so it is easy to interpret. Thus it is expected to know the resistivity value of used palm cooking oil. The results of this test obtained the resistivity value of used cooking oil after frying five times, namely 13.320 Ohm meter.

Abstract

Flood is a natural disaster that often occurs in Indonesia. Currently, flood events are relatively difficult to predict because floods generally occur suddenly in uncertain periods. Extreme rainfall is a major factor for the occurrence of floods. Considering that floods can be caused by heavy rainfall events within a few hours, it is necessary to produce daily flood forecasts for flood disaster mitigation. This study aims to test the accuracy of utilizing rainfall forecast data from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to create daily flood forecast maps. The data used in this study include Global Forecast System (GFS) data, BMKG rainfall measurement data which spread across several points in North Sumatra Province, and flood incident reports from BNPB. Data processing is carried out by Geospatial Information System (GIS) using Quantum-GIS, which includes weighting and scoring the parameters of soil type, slope, land elevation, river density, and land cover to produce Flood Prone Maps, then integrated with rainfall data to produce Daily Flood Forecast Maps. The case studies of flood events in this study are August 28 and November 28, 2022. The results showed that the spatial forecast of flood potential (WRF) has a pattern in accordance with the flood event area. Therefore, the WRF model output rainfall prediction data can be used to create a daily flood forecast map in the North Sumatra region.

Abstract

The Observation type rain gauge is a manual type rain gauge that requires a measuring cup to measure rainfall in millimeters (mm) of rain. Precise measurement requires calibration of the measuring cup so that the scale reading on the measuring cup can be trusted. Calibration of measuring cups using the mass method related to volume can use an analytical balance. Technological developments can make manual analytical balance calibration automatic by utilizing microcontrollers and pumps in filling the volume. The design of the analytical balance gets results where the average correction value for the 50 ml set point is 0.001ml, the 100 ml set point is -0.760 ml, the 150 ml set point is -0.024 ml, the 200 ml set point is -0.739 ml, and the 250 ml set point is 0.628 ml. The uncertainty value for all set points is ±0.58 ml. The correction value at each set point is different, this is influenced by the value of the measuring cup meniscus, water temperature, and Load Cell sensor. The data generated by the tool can be downloaded through the Arduino IDE application and produced files in Excel.

Abstract

This research is based on cases of hail that caused flooding in Binjai City on May 22, 2022. This study aims to see the correlation and regression of the Atmospheric Stability index value on cloud top temperature data from the Himawari-8 satellite imagery. So that the ERA-5 reanalysis data can be used to obtain cloud top temperatures in predicting hail events. The indices used in this study are CAPE, KI and TTI. The data used is located in Binjai City with correlation testing from 00UTC – 24UTC on May 22, 2022. Supported data is used in the form of sea surface temperature and wind conditions and looks at the causes of hail at the research location. The method used is Spearman's rank correlation with the results obtained in the form of a correlation value at the K index of -0.651, a correlation of the TT index of -0.563, and a correlation of the CAPE index of -0.348. The simple linear regression results also show a negative gradient line. This shows that the increase in the value of the stability index is in line with the decrease in cloud top temperature. So that the stability index data can be used as a benchmark in estimating cloud top temperatures in the case of convective cloud formation which causes hail.
