Abstract

This study investigates the psychological mechanisms of mathematics anxiety and its impact on mathematical problem-solving performance within a blended learning ecosystem supported by a Learning Management System (LMS). The primary aim of this research is to examine the relationship between mathematics anxiety and students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in technology-enhanced learning settings. The participants were 60 prospective elementary school teachers enrolled in a mathematics education course that used a blended learning model integrating face-to-face instruction and LMS-based activities. A mixed-methods design was employed to obtain both quantitative and qualitative insights. Quantitative data on mathematics anxiety and problem-solving performance were analyzed using correlational analysis and regression modeling to identify the strength and direction of the relationship between variables. Complementary qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and learning-experience reflections to explore students' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses during blended learning, how particularly LMS-mediated tasks shaped their anxiety patterns and strategic approaches to problem solving. Research findings show that the influence of mathematics anxiety on learning performance or problem solving is indirect and influenced by psychological mechanisms and a more complex learning context. Thus, mathematics anxiety cannot be understood separately, but needs to be studied together with other cognitive, affective, and contextual factors.

Abstract

This study analyzes students’ creative thinking processes in solving non-routine mathematical problems using Treffinger’s Creative Problem Solving (CPS) stages. The subjects included students with high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. Data were collected through worksheet analysis, visual representations, mathematical work, and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. Researchers use time triangulation to validate the data. The findings show that creative thinking develops in stages and differs by ability level. High-ability students complete all CPS stages optimally, demonstrating deep understanding, flexible and original strategies, and reflective evaluation, with all creativity indicators (fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration) consistently emerging. Medium-ability students show a developing but unstable process; they can understand problems and generate ideas, but remain limited in strategy variation and evaluation. Low-ability students exhibit procedural thinking, marked by misconceptions, incomplete representations, minimal idea exploration, and a lack of evaluation. Overall, the CPS-Treffinger model is effective in fostering creative thinking but requires adaptation to students’ ability levels. Teachers should design non-routine problem-based learning that encourages idea exploration, multiple representations, and reflective thinking to support the development of mathematical creativity.

Abstract

By using digital technology, this study aims to develop a learning design that facilitates multiple representations and numeracy skills. The ASSURE model was used as the design approach for this development. The first stage was a needs analysis to ensure the development aligns with the needs of educators and students. A validation stage was also conducted before classroom use to ensure it is applicable and addresses teaching and learning challenges. The method used was a mixed methods approach. The development stage provided an overview of the process, followed by descriptive and inferential statistical analyses to assess the results of the learning design implementation. The results showed that Python-based learning led to a greater increase in numeracy skills than conventional learning. The experimental group increased its average score from 60.12 in the pretest to 83.72 in the posttest, with an N-gain of 0.60, while the control group achieved an N-gain of 0.36. Statistical tests showed that the increase in both groups was significant, but the magnitude of the increase in the experimental group was more dominant. Qualitative findings from observations and questionnaires showed that students became more active, helped their understanding of concepts through various representations, and were more confident in solving numeracy problems, despite initially experiencing difficulties using Python. In addition, expert validation results showed that the developed learning design was in the very feasible category for content, media, and learning. Students demonstrate various types of representations in learning, including graphical, symbolic, pictorial, tabular, and verbal representations. Therefore, it can be concluded that developing a learning environment that aligns with learning objectives and is tailored to each student's skills and conditions can significantly increase student engagement and achieve desired competencies. Keywords: python-based learning design, multiple representation, numeracy skills, digital.

Abstract

Despite the growing integration of technology in mathematics education, research on mobile learning platforms embedding local cultural contexts—particularly ethnomathematics—remains limited at the junior secondary level in Indonesia. Mathematical problem-solving ability remains a persistent challenge among students, necessitating Android-based learning media as a more engaging instructional solution. This investigation examined the extent to which an Android-based interactive mobile learning (m-learning) platform, integrated with ethnomathematics derived from Pontianak's local culture. A quasi-experimental posttest-only control-group design was adopted for this purpose. From nine classes at SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak, 60 participants were selected via cluster random sampling—30 in the experimental group receiving m-learning instruction and 30 in the comparison group receiving instruction without m-learning. Assessment of mathematical problem-solving capacity was conducted through a descriptive test comprising three items structured around Polya's four-stage indicators, with empirically established validity coefficients ranging from 0.94 to 0.96 and a reliability coefficient of 0.78. Statistical examination involved a one-tailed independent samples t-test for group comparison, supplemented by Cohen's d for effect size quantification. Findings revealed that learners exposed to m-learning instruction demonstrated substantially superior mathematical problem-solving performance compared to their counterparts in the conventional group (mean = 84.67 vs 72.63; p < 0.05), with a large effect magnitude (Cohen's d = 1.3). These outcomes affirm that the ethnomathematics-embedded Android-based m-learning platform constitutes an efficacious and educationally meaningful intervention for cultivating students' mathematical problem-solving proficiency. Nevertheless, further research on a broader scale is warranted to enhance the generalizability of these findings, along with the incorporation of a pretest to more rigorously assess gains and establish stronger causal evidence of the intervention's effectiveness.

Abstract

The low development of creative reasoning among prospective mathematics teachers is caused by the dominance of imitative reasoning and the limitations of working memory capacity in the problem-solving process. Therefore, this study is essential to investigate the role of working memory capacity in enhancing the effectiveness of creative reasoning to support more meaningful mathematics learning. This study aims to examine the effect of prospective mathematics teachers’ working memory capacity on their creative reasoning and its processes. This study employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory design. A total of 73 prospective mathematics teachers participated in the study, selected through cluster random sampling. The Operating Span Task (OSPAN Test) was used to assess working memory capacity. A previously developed problem-solving test was used to measure creative reasoning, based on the indicators of novelty, plausibility, and mathematical foundation. Quantitative data were analyzed using linear regression techniques, while qualitative data were analyzed through three stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that working memory capacity significantly influences the creative reasoning ability of prospective mathematics teachers. Specifically, it was found that 14% of the creative reasoning demonstrated in problem-solving is attributable to working memory capacity. Prospective mathematics teachers with high working memory capacity demonstrate flexibility and fluency in generating new ideas to solve problems, are able to use and connect mathematical concepts appropriately, and provide logical arguments to support the validity of their ideas. In contrast, those with low working memory capacity do not exhibit these characteristics.

Abstract

Research on creative reasoning in mathematical problem-solving continues to grow significantly, as evidenced by global trends and the large number of publications identified through bibliometric analysis and the PRISMA systematic review. This study aims to analyze the trends in further research on creative reasoning and to examine aspects of creative reasoning used in mathematical problem-solving. This study employed a library research design using both bibliometric and descriptive approaches. Scientific publications related to creative reasoning served as the data sources. Data were collected through database searches using the string "creative reasoning", resulting in 1769 documents for bibliometric analysis, and 22 articles selected using the PRISMA guidelines as a systematic review instrument. Data analysis methods included bibliometric analysis to identify global trends and descriptive analysis of selected articles through the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. The results indicate that creative reasoning research is a current research trend in various countries and provide information on sources and documents that need to be studied as a basis for creative reasoning in mathematical problem-solving. Furthermore, the creative reasoning aspect of problem-solving is more focused on three components: novelty, plausibility, and mathematical foundation, also known as anchoring. It is concluded that these three aspects can form a more systematic theoretical framework for creative reasoning, with implications for the development of models, operational indicators, and assessment instruments for students' creative reasoning that are more specific, valid, and contextual.
