Abstract

This study aims to identify the level of climate change awareness among small-medium scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) and to investigate its impact on future business orientation, with individual self-perception acting as a mediating variable. Addressing a significant gap in the literature, this research explores the reciprocal influence between SMEs and climate change—an area previously underexplored. Conducted in West Sumatra, Indonesia, this study employs a quantitative causal analysis approach using Structural Equation Modelling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) for robust analysis. The findings indicate that while awareness and self-perception of climate change among SMEs are low, they significantly influence potential changes in business orientation. The study reveals that although many SMEs possess a high level of educational attainment, this does not necessarily translate into heightened awareness or self-perception regarding climate change. This disconnect underscores the critical role of tailored educational initiatives and support systems to bridge the gap between knowledge and action. Additionally, the study finds that SMEs often prioritize immediate financial stability over long-term environmental sustainability, driven by the necessity to meet daily operational demands. These results underscore the urgent need for pre-emptive government policies to guide SMEs toward sustainable practices. Effective interventions should include financial incentives, technical assistance, and educational programs designed to enhance climate change awareness and capabilities among SMEs. Furthermore, this study contributes to the field of industrial engineering by identifying opportunities to optimize SME operations. By integrating environmental sustainability into business strategies, SMEs can enhance their resilience and competitiveness while contributing to broader environmental goals. This research advances the understanding of the dynamic interplay between SMEs and climate change, providing a foundation for future studies aimed at promoting sustainable industrial practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Usability of the Rasch Model: A Study to Develop a Valid and Reliable Measure of Hybrid Entrepreneurial Interest It explored the cultural bias that exists between Minangkabau and non-Minangkabau people. 108 people had completed the three measures, and their respective data were subjected to tests of reliability, validity, and DIF. Results showed that the instrument has good reliability, evidenced by high item and person reliability coefficients and a large separation index. Most items were fitted via the Rasch Model, while some showed small signs of bias. The DIF analysis showed noteworthy cultural differences on several items, most prominently Interest 4, which presented a significant DIF difference. These results suggest a disparity in economic entity perception between the Minangkabau respondents, who grew up with cultural values promoting big capital entrepreneurship with possible aspirations to achieve economic stability, and the non-Minangkabau respondents. The findings highlight the need of considering cultural contexts when developing measures of risk preference in relationship to entrepreneurship. The tool has worked well, but it still needs refinement to be more culturally neutral and widely applicable. This study contributes to entrepreneurship theory by expanding our understanding of culturally responsive entrepreneurship and offers practical recommendations to encourage culturally responsive entrepreneurial efforts.

Abstract

This study evidences that psychological construct in terms of narcissistic behavior through an excessive use of social media will not boost entrepreneurs to learn from past failure experiences in business. By considering excessive narcissism through social media as a personality disorder, this study examines it as a possible cause of entrepreneurial failure. The study uses data from two sets of questionnaire with one hundred and fifty failed entrepreneurs. Analysis is quantitatively undertaken with Structural Equation Modelling/SEM and is supported by the result of Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16/NPI-16 questionnaire which reflects the degree of respondents’ narcissistic behavior. The study infers that the greater narcissistic behavior entrepreneurs has, even with the presence of entrepreneurial learning from the past failures, may lead entrepreneurs to experience subsequent failure. Stubbornness and hypocrisy are two reasons behind this. Therefore, entrepreneurs should be aware of their negative character-personality and psychological aspects when performing entrepreneurial processes.

Abstract

This paper examines and discusses the presence of individuals’ passion as a psychological construct that may cause entrepreneurial failure – with particular context and analysis to the failed nascent entrepreneurs in one of the largest port city in Sumatera island, Padang, Indonesia. This paper uses quantitative study with relational approach, and was undertaken with 180 failed nascent entrepreneurs in Padang. Data and information were collected by using a questionnaire as a cross-sectional cohort data and were further analyzed with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and supported by PLS 3.0 as the statistical tool. Both the process and the content framework were used to show the logic of methodology according to the dualistic model of passion) and their relationship with entrepreneurial failure. The study found that individuals’ harmonious passion in entrepreneurship should also be considered as a cause of entrepreneurial failure, meanwhile the obsessive passion is significantly found to influence entrepreneurial failure. This study implies that entrepreneurs should consider and make clear boundaries between psychological push and rationality when they start new ventures. This paper has value and originality in terms of the examination and analysis of individuals’ passion as a psychological construct that causes entrepreneurial failure. In different with other researches and studies which have merely viewed the passion as a source of entrepreneurial success, this study views and argues that individuals’ passion either is categorized as harmonious or obsessive passions (especially when it is uncontrollable) may also cause the entrepreneurial failure.Â
