Abstract

The rapid expansion of Indonesia’s halal industry requires alignment between economic growth and the principles of religious moderation, including wasaṭiyyah (balance) and maṣlaḥah (public welfare). This study analyzes how these principles are integrated into halal governance, certification, and policy frameworks while identifying structural and socio-cultural barriers that hinder their implementation. Employing a descriptive qualitative design grounded in interpretivism, the research uses document and content analysis of legal instruments (Law No. 33/2014 on Halal Product Assurance), institutional reports (BPJPH and KNEKS), and peer-reviewed literature. Triangulation was applied through cross-validation of academic, governmental, and media sources. The findings reveal that religious moderation is conceptually acknowledged yet structurally fragmented due to bureaucratic inefficiencies, inconsistent policy coordination, and limited accessibility for micro and small enterprises (MSMEs). Cultural resistance and theological diversity further constrain its application. The study contributes to the interdisciplinary discourse on Islamic governance and ethical regulation by operationalizing wasaṭiyyah and maṣlaḥah as analytical tools for inclusive halal policymaking. It recommends strengthening regulatory coordination, digitizing halal certification, and embedding moderation training within institutional programs to enhance transparency and inclusivity. Religious moderation thus emerges not merely as a moral principle but as a structural framework for sustainable halal industry development and global competitiveness

Abstract

This study aims to explore applying ethical values derived from the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad SAW in creating a conducive learning environment at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 1 Payakumbuh, West Sumatera. The research employs a qualitative approach using Hassan Hanafi's hermeneutical framework, which involves historical, eidetic, and practical criticism of hadiths related to teacher-student ethics. Data was collected through document analysis of hadiths and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. The results indicate that applying ethical principles from the hadiths, such as respect, justice, patience, and compassion, is crucial in fostering positive interactions between teachers and students. Teachers at MAN 1 Payakumbuh have adapted their teaching methods to ensure effective understanding, including using simple language, providing feedback, and accommodating different student needs. The conclusion of this research emphasizes that implementing ethical values from the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad SAW can create a learning environment that supports students' academic and moral development. This study fills a gap in the existing literature by offering practical insights into integrating hadith-based ethics into everyday educational practices in Islamic schools, particularly in Indonesia.

Abstract

Despite extensive scholarship on Islamic moderation in Indonesia, existing studies have not systematically explained why debates about wasatiyyah persist among actors who share fundamental moderate commitments. This study examines how Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Indonesia's two largest Islamic organizations construct competing visions of wasatiyyah through Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) and Islam Nusantara (Archipelagic Islam). Drawing on Gallie's essentially contested concepts, Bourdieu's field theory, and social movement framing theory, the study employs a qualitative comparative case study based on document analysis of official organizational sources from 2015 to 2024. The analysis across four challenges digital radicalism, transnational Islamic movements, state religious moderation policy, and internal diversity reveals that while both organizations share commitments to the Indonesian nation-state, Pancasila, and the rejection of violence, they articulate moderation through systematically different framings, state-positioning strategies, and institutional mechanisms shaped by distinct capital configurations. Muhammadiyah maintains critical distance from state power, emphasizing education-based responses, while NU pursues strategic partnership and mobilization-based approaches. The study demonstrates that wasatiyyah functions as an essentially contested concept whose meaning is constituted through ongoing organizational contestation. These findings contribute to debates on Islamic moderation by showing that the resilience of Indonesian Islam lies in its internal plurality rather than definitional uniformity, with implications for comparative studies in other Muslim-majority contexts
