Abstract

This essay discusses Talal Asad?s critics upon definition of religion which has been formulated by Clifford Geertz. As an essentialist-anthropologist, Geertz defined religion as a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men. Based on Talal Asad?s reasoning, however, religion could not be defined simply as an analogy of words. When it is limited to a series of words there will be gaps of religious elements that are wrapped up, or the definition will load elements that arenot religion in-essence. For Talal Asad, words is imposibly far from socio-political factors. The former affects and changes the latter throughout the timeas does religion. It changes throughout the time in respond to and in line with social-historical contexts.Keywords: Talal Asad, Cliffort Geertz, Religion

Abstract

Usul al-fiqh and fiqh are a mechanism and a product of ijtihād were born in the Islamic classical period. Along with the times, this mechanism should adopt modern science so that the resulting of fiqh can answer the needs of the times. Jasser Auda is offering a systems approach in applying Islamic law. According to Auda, consideration needs maqashidī through the analysis of six features; cognitive nature, wholeness, openness, interrelated hierarchy, multi-dimensionality, and purposefulness. So that, Islamic jurisprudence can be validated by analyzing of these features till the humanist, justice, peace, care for the environment, and following of the development of science of Islamic jurisprudence can be realized

Abstract

The problem in this research is how the attitude of Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy towards the hadith daif and what are the implications of the inclusion of the hadith in the Tafsir An-Nur. The objectives to be achieved in this research are: (1) to find out how Hasbi Ash- Shiddieqy's attitude towards the hadith daif. (2) to trace whether the daif hadith in Tafsir An-Nur was used as evidence in interpreting a verse, especially verses of law. (3) to find out the implications of the inclusion of the daif hadith in the Tafsir An-Nur. This research is in the style of library research, while the primary data source is Tafsir An-Nur by Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy and supporting sources in the form of tafsir books and other hadiths. The method used is literature and documentary studies, while the data analysis uses descriptive analysis. The results of this study reveal several findings about the consistency of Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy regarding the authenticity of hadith, namely: (1) Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy's attitude towards daif hadith, seen Hasbi's inconsistency between theory and practice of using daif hadith. (2) The daif traditions in An-Nur's interpretation are generally not used as evidence in interpreting a verse, especially law verses, because the traditions are presented only as explaining asbabul nuzul ayat, additional information in interpreting a verse. (3) The implication of the inclusion of daif hadith in An-Nur's interpretation has several forms, namely Hasbi uses the dha'if traditions in An-Nur's Tafsir, even uses mawdhu 'hadiths or narrations that have mawdhu characteristics, then regarding how to quote the hadith which Without explaining the mukharij or the companions who narrated the hadith, to make matters worse Hasbi included the hadith with the Indonesian editorial staff, even without including the mukharij or the narrators of the hadith, the inconsistency also for Hasbi was the use of hadith source books not from hadith books. Therefore, it is necessary to refill the hadiths in the Tafsir An-Nur book.

Abstract

The debate over the origin of the wind between medieval scientists and theologians became a hot issue. Scientists that consist of philosophers based their arguments on empirical facts and theologians werebased on the revelation of al-Qur’an and Hadith. One of the medieval theologians was al-Majlisī (1037-1110/1627-98). He interpreted cosmological verses based on the process, categorization, and the term of al-Qur'an. This research is a library research usinga historical approach to obtain data and conducting content analysis. As for the term related to the Qur'an about wind, a semantic approach was used. Primary data was the work of al-Majlisī, Biḥār al-Anwar. The results of the study indicated that al-Majlisī rejected the astrological theory which stated that wind is a spin of air originating from the smallest particular composition of the earth, heated, and subjected to evaporation. According to al-Majlisī, the wind caused by God's willin power to blow it with the intensity that He desired. According to al-Majlisī, the wind can be distinguished whether it is beneficial or not as found in al-Qur'an

Abstract

Abstrak: Pakiah dan Sadakah: Fenomena Tradisi Mamakiah di Padang Pariaman. Artikel ini mengungkap fenomena mamakiah pada komunitas pakiah, santri pesantren tradisional Padang Pariaman. Niimma mengklaim sadakah yang diperoleh oleh pakiah pada beberapa pesantren, diserahkan kepada buya. Penulis menelusuri latarbelakang historis kapan mamakiah terbentuk, faktor-faktor apa yang memotifasi munculnya, serta bagaimana sikap dan respon masyarakat. Melalui pendekatan fenomenologi ditemukan bahwa mamakiah telah eksis semenjak Islam masuk di Ulakan Sumatera Barat sekitar abad kelimabelas. Penulis berargumen bahwa pakiah disuport oleh masyarakat dan institusi. Selanjutnya menurut penulis Pakiah melakukan aktivitas mamakiah untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dasar mereka selama proses belajar di surau. Dua motif lainnya adalah kultural dan pemahaman keagamaan. Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa selain motif di atas, pakiah memiliki modal kultural. Abstract: This article reveals the phenomenon of mamakiah in pakiah community, students of traditional Islamic boarding school (pesantren) Padang Pariaman. Niimma claims that sadakah obtained by pakiah in some pesantren, submitted to buya. The author traces the historical background to when mamakiah is formed, what factors motivate the emergence, and how the attitude and response of the community. Through the phenomenological approach it is found that mamakiah have existed since Islam entered Ulakan Sumatera Barat around the fifteenth century. The author argues that pakiah is supported by society and institutions. Furthermore, according to the author pakiah perform mamakiah activities to meet their basic needs during the learning process in surau (a simple form of mosque). Two other motifs are cultural and religious understanding. The writer believes that in addition to these motives, pakiah has also a cultural capital. Keywords: pakiah, buya, sadakah, mamakiah tradition

Abstract

Artikel ini mendiskusikan gagasan hermeneutik double movement Fazlur Rahman dalam menafsirkan Alquran. Terdapat kalangan yang menyetujui dan menolaknya. Artikel  ini  menfokuskan pada penelusuran terhadap sikap dan  aplikasi  M. Quraish Shihab terhadap double movement dengan pendekatan content analisys. Objek material riset ini adalah penafsiran Shihab terhadap ayat hukum yang terdapat dalam Tafsir Al-Mishbah, dimana Rahman juga membahas ayat tersebut. Tulisan ini menemukan bahwa secara prinsip Shihab meresepsi positif terhadap keberadaan hermeneutik double movement, dijadikan pendekatan dalam penafsiran Alquran. Namun, ada rambu yang mesti dipatuhi dalam menggunakannya yaitu dengan tidak menafikan keberadaan redaksi ayat, tidak menghapus aspek hukum yang terkandung dalam Alquran, dan memerhatikan ayat secara holistik. Shihab menolak penggunaan hermeneutik dalam menafsirkan Alquran jika batasan-batasan tersebut diabaikan. Berdasarkan prinsip tersebut, ditemukan  variasi sikap  Shihab. Dari keempat ayat yang ditelusuri dalam kajian ini; dua ayat  ditafsirkann oleh Shihab dengan menggunakan double movement, dan dua lainnya ditafsirkannya tanpa menggunakan double movement.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the profile of Muhammad SAW as an educator. The success of the Prophet in building Arab from an ignorant society to a world-class civilized society invites questions about the characteristics and professionalism of the Prophet as an educator. The study was conducted on several related hadiths, using morphosemantic and didactic linguistic approaches. Specifically, to reveal the characteristics of the Prophet as an educator, it will be traced through hadiths that explicitly contain the phrase Rasulullah as an educator. Meanwhile, related to professionalism, it is traced through the hadiths that describe the method of education practiced by the Prophet. This study found that; 1) There are three characteristics of the Prophet as an educator seen explicitly in the hadith, namely; a) mu'allim muyassir, b) ahsanu ta'lim, and c) arfaqu mu'allim. 2) The Prophet practiced various methods in education/learning and used the correct method for particular learning, as the professional form of the Prophet as an educator

Abstract

This article aims to present the formulation of the hadith authenticity method formulated by Jonathan A. C. Brown in his theory named the Three-Tiered Method. This investigation is carried out through three steps; First, demands for a source of hadith, second, evaluates the reliability of that source, third, seeks corroboration for the hadith. Brown also argues that the third step is considered pivotal in hadith criticism. The more sources of the report, the more credible the report is. In the theory of historical evaluation of western scholar, such belief is called the criterion of multiple attestation. Briefly, quantity changes lead to quality changes. Therefore, the author's reflection on the issue relating to the hadith about the suggestion to wear a white dress (which has been criticise using this theory) proves this hadith to be authentic. Abstrak: Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mempresentasikan formulasi metode autentisitas hadis yang dirumuskan oleh Jonathan A. C. Brown melalui teorinya Three Tiered Method. Investigasi hadis diaplikasikan dalam tiga langkah. Pertama, tuntutan adanya sumber hadis. Kedua, mengevaluasi keterpercayaan sumber hadis. Ketiga, mencari penguat sebuah hadis. Brown berpendapat bahwa langkah ketiga dianggap cukup krusial dalam kritik hadis. Semakin banyak sumber laporan maka akan muncul kepercayaan yang tinggi terhadap laporan tersebut. Dalam evaluasi historis versi Sarjana Barat, hal ini disebut kriteria pengesahan berganda (the criterion of multiple attestation). Pendek kata, kuantitas akan berubah menuju kualitas. Refleksi penulis dalam kasus hadis tentang anjuran berpakaian putih menggunakan teori tersebut membuktikan bahwa hadis ini otentik

Abstract

Qawâ`id al-tafsîr as a kind of `ulūm al-Qur’ân has a significant developments in this contemporary era. One of its supporting aspect is spirit and firmly of `ulūm al-Qur’ân s scholars’ in order to see Qur’anic meaning with linguistic approach. Qawâ`id al-tafsîr is general theories that become a standard by mufassir in order to understand the meanings of al-Qur’an and to know the way to use it. It is taken by induction from many quranic verses and exegeses of mufassir toward al-Qur’an, especially linguistic mufassir.
