Abstract

This study aims to reflect on the theological meaning of natural disasters in Sumatra (Aceh, Simeulue, Padang) from an ecological perspective. Although Sumatra is geologically prone to earthquakes and tectonic activities due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides are exacerbated by human actions, including deforestation, watershed degradation, and uncontrolled land conversion. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach using library research and a theological-reflective method. Primary sources include Sacred Scripture, Church documents (Laudato Si', Gaudium et Spes, General Directory for Catechesis), and relevant ecological theology literature. The findings indicate that natural disasters in Sumatra can be interpreted as "signs of the times" revealing both ecological and moral crises. Disasters are not divine punishment but consequences of humanity's misuse of freedom in managing creation. Ecological conversion is urgently needed at personal, social, and structural levels. Within the catechetical framework, disaster experiences become "texts of life" that guide the faithful toward mature faith expressed in lifestyle changes, solidarity, and responsibility for our common home.

Abstract

The ecological crisis calls for faith formation that can foster contextual ecological awareness among the faithful. One relevant approach is through catechesis that integrates local wisdom, such as the Batang Garing symbol in Dayak culture. This study aims to explore the ecological values embedded in the Batang Garing symbol and to reflect on them in the light of Church teachings in order to formulate a contextual ecological catechesis model. The method used is qualitative research with a literature study approach, employing descriptive-analytical and comparative analysis of theological and cultural sources. The findings show that Batang Garing contains values of relationality, cosmic balance, and moral responsibility that are aligned with the concept of integral ecology in Church teachings. The integration of these values into catechesis enables a more contextual, communicative, and transformative faith formation. The implication of this study highlights the importance of developing catechetical models based on local culture as an effective means to foster ecological awareness among the faithful and to encourage concrete actions in caring for creation as an expression of faith.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have transformed the paradigm of faith proclamation, requiring the Church to optimize social media as a relevant catechetical instrument. This study aims to examine how the use of the TikTok platform can be optimized as an effective means of creative catechesis in connecting complex faith teachings for people in the digital era. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study technique, where data is collected from various scientific literature, Church documents, and relevant library sources. The research findings indicate that TikTok is an effective digital space for catechesis because it is supported by attractive audio-visual features, interactive features such as stitches and comments that enable two-way dialogue, and an algorithmic system that expands the reach of proclamation. The strategy of catechesis through short videos has proven to be able to change the perception of faith teaching that has become rigid to a more personal spiritual experience that is easily understood by all levels of society, especially the younger generation. The implications of this study emphasize the need for the Church to consistently adapt to digital culture and increase content creativity to ensure the continuity of inclusive evangelization amidst the dynamics of modern developments.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed patterns of communication, learning processes, and the ways believers access religious information in daily life. While this transformation provides easier access to information, it also fosters an instant culture characterized by fast, brief, and less reflective information consumption. This condition poses significant challenges for the Church, particularly in faith formation, as it may weaken the depth of believers’ understanding of faith. This study aims to examine the role of literate catechesis as a response to the instant culture of the digital era, while also exploring the opportunities offered by digital media in faith proclamation. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method based on relevant academic sources. The findings indicate that literate catechesis plays a crucial role in fostering mature faith through reading, reflection, and critical thinking processes, enabling believers not only to consume information but also to internalize and live out their faith more deeply. On the other hand, digital media offers significant opportunities to develop catechesis that is broader, more participatory, and contextually relevant. Integrating reflective depth with creative digital approaches is essential to ensure that faith formation remains both meaningful and relevant within an increasingly instant-oriented culture.

Abstract

The phenomenon of self-reward is increasingly popular among young people, including prospective catechists, as a response to personal achievements. However, this practice has the potential to lead to a consumptive lifestyle that neglects spiritual values. Christian education plays an important role in shaping the self-control of prospective catechists to manage self-reward wisely, thus preventing disruption to their spiritual balance. The purpose of this study is to explore how Christian education can develop self-control in dealing with the self-reward phenomenon. This study employs a qualitative approach with literature review methods and in-depth interviews with prospective catechists actively involved in church education. The results show that prospective catechists who receive Christian education focused on character and spiritual development are better able to distinguish between genuine spiritual needs and temporary worldly desires. Christian education plays a key role in teaching self-control that strikes a balance between personal satisfaction and spiritual goals. In conclusion, self-control taught in Christian education can help prospective catechists face the temptation of a consumptive lifestyle and become life examples that better align with Christ’s teachings.

Abstract

Catechesis is a process of faith formation that aims to help the faithful, especially Catholic youth, to know, internalize, and live out the Christian faith in their daily lives. In the digital era, youth participation in ecclesial life tends to decline, as indicated by low involvement in Church activities. This condition is influenced by various factors, such as academic and work commitments, as well as the dominance of digital culture, which is often more appealing to young people than spiritual activities. This study aims to analyze the role of catechesis in increasing the participation of Catholic youth in the digital era and to examine the relevance of retreats and recollections as contextual forms of catechesis. The research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method, supported by observations of ecclesial life at the station level. The findings indicate that catechesis that is primarily informative is less effective in addressing the needs of young people, who seek a more personal and participatory faith experience. In this regard, retreats and recollections have the potential to serve as forms of catechesis that deepen faith experiences and encourage active participation in the life of the Church.

Abstract

The development of digital media has brought significant changes to social and religious life, including the practice of catechesis. One phenomenon emerging from the digital environment is the echo chamber, a condition in which individuals are predominantly exposed to information, opinions, and perspectives that align with their existing beliefs. This phenomenon can limit critical thinking, strengthen prejudices, reduce openness to different viewpoints, and hinder constructive dialogue. As a result, the digital space may become a place of polarization rather than mutual understanding. This article aims to examine the phenomenon of echo chambers in relation to the spirituality of catechetical dialogue in the light of Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti. Through a qualitative and theological reflection, the study highlights the relevance of dialogue spirituality as a means of fostering openness, mutual listening, respect, and fraternity amid diversity. Pope Francis emphasizes that authentic dialogue enables individuals to encounter others, appreciate differences, and seek the common good together. Therefore, digital catechesis should not merely function as a medium for transmitting religious content but also as an inclusive and transformative space for dialogue. In this way, catechesis in the digital era can help believers develop critical awareness, openness to diversity, and a stronger commitment to building a culture of encounter and solidarity.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of interfaith solidarity rapidly flourishing in Indonesia’s digital sphere during Ramadan, specifically through the viral "war takjil" trend involving active participation from non-Muslim communities. With national social media users reaching 180 million, digital platforms have transformed into crucial interaction spaces facilitating fluid and participatory interfaith communication. This research employs a qualitative approach using literature review, phenomenological analysis, and theological reflection within the Catholic tradition to understand the meaning behind this social behavior. Main findings indicate that this phenomenon is a concrete manifestation of bottom-up pluralism, emerging organically from daily social interactions. Based on the Contact Hypothesis, these digital interactions successfully reduce prejudice by achieving common goals and maintaining equal status in public spaces. Theologically, the phenomenon reflects the spirit of universal brotherhood and solidarity emphasized in the documents Fratelli Tutti and Nostra Aetate. The article concludes that healthy pluralism is the capacity to maintain one's own faith identity while actively building bridges of love with those of different beliefs. The implications emphasize the importance of media literacy for faith educators and catechists to guide the community in responding to digital social dynamics constructively without compromising theological truths. This study serves as a reference for developing inclusive, love-based interfaith communication strategies within Indonesia’s diverse digital society.
