Abstract

Transactional sex has been recognized as a significant element hindering the reduction of drug usage in Papua, Indonesia. The national objective for drug usage reduction was established at 1.67% for 2024; nevertheless, this target remains unfulfilled. This research investigated the correlation between transactional sex and substance abuse among female and adolescent prisoners in Papua Province. A case-control approach was utilized, employing primary data gathered from May to September 2023 at the Special Correctional Institution for Juveniles (LPKA) and the Women’s Correctional Institution (LPP) in Papua. The research population consisted of 85 offenders incarcerated from 2021 to 2023. A total of 26 cases (drug users) and 59 controls (non-users) were included using total sampling, in a 1:2 ratio. Data were gathered using a modified version of the Rapid Survey Questionnaire on Injecting Drug User Behavior (SCP Penasun). Analysis was conducted using STATA version 14, employing multivariate logistic regression to identify related factors. In all, 30.6% of participants were identified as drug users according to case-control selection, rather than as an estimation of population-level prevalence. Inmates who indicated participation in transactional sex exhibited increased odds of drug acquisition (adjusted OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 0.46–5.39) after controlling for work status, past-year drug usage, and duration of use. The findings suggest a possible trend of heightened drug acquisition among inmates engaged in transactional sex, although the correlation remains ambiguous. Consequently, integrated therapies targeting both substance use and sexual risk behaviors are crucial in custodial environments.

Abstract

Jayapura Regency is one of the areas where the malaria rate is still quite high, one of which is Nemburesi Village with an Annual Parasite Incidence (API) above 5.00 (red zone). This research aims to describe the characteristics, environmental conditions and behavior of respondents in Nemburesi Village, Jayapura Regency. The research design used Case Control. The case population was 25, using a total sampling technique and a ratio of cases and controls of 1:1, so that the total was 50 respondents. Data were collected by direct observation and using a questionnaire instrument. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in cross-tabulation form. The research results showed that among malaria sufferers, 48% of respondents had walls that were not tight, 84% had no ceilings, and 96% had no roofing material. Respondents who suffer from malaria have standing water at 60%, the distance to breeding places that do not meet the requirements is 64%. 96% of respondents who had malaria had a habit outside at night. There is no significant relationship between the external environment and the incidence of malaria (p=0.755). In conclusion, in the variable environmental conditions in the house there are 3 indicators of malaria risk which are more numerous in sufferers, namely; the conditions of the walls are not tight, there is no ceiling, and there is no roofing material. In environmental variables outside the home, there are 2 dominant risk indicators for sufferers, namely; standing water and distance to the breeding place that do not meet the requirements, and in the habit variable there is 1 dominant risk indicator in sufferers, namely; habit of going outside at night.

Abstract

The widespread misuse of drugs, particularly Class I Narcotics, among teenagers in Papua Province, along with the high number of cases involving children detained as drivers and users in juvenile detention centers, has necessitated the implementation of one of the subjects, namely Prevention and Management of Narcotics, Psychotropic Substances, and Other Addictive Substances (NAPZA), at the Keerom District Juvenile Detention Center. Method: Community Engagement Activities (PkM) were carried out for one day on May 5, 2023, at the Keerom District Juvenile Detention Center, targeting an audience of 26 juvenile detainees. This PkM activity was executed using three methods: a question-and-answer session involving sharing activities with the juvenile detainees, Community Health Education (Penkesmas) in the form of a lecture on the dangers of drugs, and Data Collection, encompassing the gathering of data on the characteristics and knowledge of juvenile detainees concerning the hazards of drugs. Following the completion of the data collection phase, data analysis was conducted using STATA 24 software. Results: The majority of the detained children (50%) were 13 years old, with the highest level of education being the completion of High School (SMA) at 53.8%. There was a knowledge increase by 23.4% before and after the lecture. Conclusion: The implementation of the NAPZA subject through lectures resulted in a boost in the children's knowledge, and it was determined that the most widely consumed and circulated drug in Papua is Cannabis.
