Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the histological profile of necrotic cell counts in the islets of Langerhans in hyperglycemic male white rats given mangosteen peel extract. Hyperglycemic conditions can form reactive oxygen species (ROS)/free radicals. Excessive ROS can cause oxidative stress and exacerbate cell necrosis in the islets of Langerhans. Mangosteen peel contains the antioxidant compound, Xanthone, an organic compound derived from diphenyl-γ-pyrone that can neutralize ROS and inhibit islet cell necrosis. This study employed a randomized post-test-only control group design. Four groups of male white rats: the untreated group (normal), the alloxan-induced group, the 250, and 500 mg/kgBW dose groups. The data results were tested using Kruskal-Wallis. The results of the study indicated that mangosteen peel extract had an effect on the histological profile of necrotic cell counts in the islets of Langerhans in male white rats experiencing hyperglycemia; with the number of necrotic cells decreased, the mangosteen peel extract dose of 250 mg was 19.2, and the dose of 500 mg was 18.4. Mangosteen peel extract had an effect on necrotic cells in the islets of Langerhans

Abstract

Excessive screen time in early childhood can affect various aspects of development, including speech abilities. This study aims to determine the relationship between screen time duration and the occurrence of speech delay in children aged 0–6 years in Malang City. A case–control design was used with a total of 60 children, consisting of 30 children with speech delay and 30 children with normal speech development. Data were collected using a questionnaire measuring daily screen time duration and the Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire (KPSP) to assess developmental status. Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between screen time duration and speech delay (p = 0.000). The findings indicate that children exposed to screen time for more than one hour per day have a higher risk of experiencing speech delay compared to those with limited exposure. These results highlight the important role of parents in supervising and limiting the use of digital media. By reducing screen time and increasing direct interaction, children’s speech and language development can be better supported. This study concludes that managing screen time is a crucial step in preventing speech delay in early childhood

Abstract

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disorder of the joints that progresses over time, with inflammation playing a key role in its underlying mechanisms. Interleukin-8 (IL-8), a pro-inflammatory cytokine that participates in immune responses and neutrophil migration, has been associated with the process of cartilage breakdown in OA. This study was conducted to analyze the association between serum IL-8 concentrations and the radiographic severity of knee OA as exploratory evidence to enhance understanding of OA pathophysiology.Method: This exploratory observational research applied a cross-sectional approach in patients diagnosed with knee OA. Seven participants were enrolled through total sampling at the Larasati Pondok Osteoarthritis Elderly Health Center, Faculty of Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University, Surabaya. Radiographic severity of OA was determined using the Kellgren–Lawrence grading system. Venous blood specimens were obtained to determine serum IL-8 concentrations as an indicator of systemic inflammation. Results: Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant inverse correlation between serum IL-8 concentrations and OA severity (r = −0.866, P = 0.012). These results indicate that IL-8 concentrations in serum are relatively elevated in the early phase of OA and tend to decline as the disease progresses. Conclusion: The findings of this exploratory study indicate that serum IL-8 may represent systemic inflammatory activity during the early stages of knee OA and holds potential as a biomarker candidate for future investigation. Further longitudinal studies involving larger sample sizes are necessary to validate its clinical relevance for OA detection and disease monitoring. Keywords: Cartilage, inflammation, interleukin-8, joint diseases, osteoarthritis, risk factors

Abstract

Speech delay is a common developmental concern in early childhood, affecting cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Maternal employment has been hypothesized to influence speech development, potentially due to reduced parent–child interaction. However, current evidence remains inconclusive, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to evaluate the association between maternal employment and speech delay in children aged 0–6 years in Malang, Indonesia. A case–control study was conducted from January to March 2025 at a private pediatric clinic in Malang City, Indonesia. A total of 60 children were recruited through consecutive sampling and categorized into two groups: 30 children with speech delay (cases) and 30 with typical speech development (controls). Maternal employment status and relevant sociodemographic data were collected using structured questionnaires. Speech development was assessed using the validated Kuesioner Pra Skrining Perkembangan (KPSP). Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test, with significance set at p < 0.05. Of the total participants, 27 mothers (45.0%) were employed. Among children of employed mothers, 48.1% had speech delay, compared to 51.5% among children of non-employed mothers. The association between maternal employment and speech delay was not statistically significant (χ² = 0.07; p = 0.795). No significant association was found between maternal employment and speech delay. These findings suggest that emphasis should shift from employment status to enhancing the quality of parent–child interaction and promoting early developmental support in diverse family contexts.
