Abstract

This study aimed to determine how the marketing chain of Eucheuma spinosum seaweed and the quality of dry Eucheuma spinosum seaweed originate from each marketing chain in the research area. This research was expected to provide information to the public regarding the marketing chain of dried Eucheuma spinosum seaweed. This research was held from July to August 2021 in Darawa Village, South Kaledupa District, Wakatobi Regency, and the Laboratory of Water Productivity and Quality, Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University. This type of research is quantitative and qualitative research (mixed method). The results showed that the seaweed market chain originating from Darawa Village, South Kaledupa District, Wakatobi Regency, consists of fishermen as producers, local collectors, interregional collectors, and intercity collectors. The results of the research on the quality of dry Eucheuma spinosum seaweed showed that the water content at the fishermen level was 62,212%, local collectors were 63,485%, and inter-regional collectors were 64,139%. The viscosity test value of dry Eucheuma spinosum seaweed at the fishermen level is 30.77 cps, local collectors are 34.57 cps, and inter-regional collectors are 32.40 cps. This research concludes that the seaweed from Darawa Village has penetrated the inter-regional market while the quality of the seaweed at each level of the market chain does not show a significant difference.

Abstract

Kandungan selulosa dan karakteristik mekanik selulosa dalam menentukan kelayakan rumput laut sebagai bahan baku biomaterial ramah lingkungan, selain sifat fisikokimia selulosa diperlukan untuk menunjang pemanfaatan limbah rumput laut secara optimal. Sehubungan dengan hal tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kadar dan karakteristik mekanik selulosa dari rumput laut Kappaphycus alvarezii yang berasal dari Kabupaten Takalar. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari bulan September hingga Januari 2025 di Makassar, dengan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif melalui metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar selulosa meningkat dari 12,31% pada sampel mentah menjadi 20,04% setelah proses ekstraksi. Analisis FTIR mengidentifikasi gugus fungsi khas selulosa seperti –OH, C=O, dan C–O–C, sementara SEM menunjukkan perubahan morfologi menjadi lebih berpori dan homogen setelah perlakuan kimia. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa Kappaphycus alvarezii berpotensi tinggi sebagai sumber bahan selulosa yang dapat dikembangkan untuk keperluan bioplastik atau biomaterial lainnya.

Abstract

Hospital wastewater contains a complex mixture of organic pollutants, suspended solids, pathogenic microorganisms, pharmaceutical residues, and hazardous substances that may threaten environmental quality and public health if discharged without adequate treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Hasanuddin University Hospital, Makassar, Indonesia, by assessing the quality of treated wastewater based on selected physicochemical and microbiological parameters. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed through direct sampling at the WWTP between November 2025 and January 2026. Grab sampling was conducted at the influent and effluent points, while laboratory analyses measured total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, cadmium (Cd), and total coliform following APHA standard methods. The results demonstrated that the WWTP effectively reduced pollutant concentrations, with removal efficiencies of 96.36% for TSS, 81.58% for BOD, 83.71% for COD, 66.67% for Cd, and 99.35% for total coliform. The effluent pH remained stable within the neutral range, supporting effective biological treatment and compliance with environmental quality standards. These findings indicate that the integrated physical, biological, and chemical treatment processes operated efficiently in reducing pollutant loads before wastewater discharge. Continuous operational monitoring, routine maintenance, and optimization of treatment processes are recommended to ensure long-term treatment performance and support environmentally sustainable hospital wastewater management.
