Abstract

This research discusses language change as a result of the influence of social media. In an increasingly advanced digital era, social media has become one of the primary communication tools for individuals worldwide. This study utilizes descriptive and comparative analysis methods to explore the influence of social media on language change. Firstly, the research identifies grammar, syntax, and vocabulary changes due to social media usage. Then, the study compares the language used in traditional communication with that used in social media communication. The findings of this research indicate significant language changes due to the use of social media. There is an increase in the use of abbreviations, emoticons, and distinctive terms specific to social media that affect the way humans communicate in a digital context. Additionally, casual writing styles, non-formal language use, and the adaptation of foreign words have become characteristics of social media communication. These language changes can have both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, social media has enabled faster and more efficient communication between individuals across the globe. Using a more casual and non-formal language can also strengthen social bonds among social media users. However, on the other hand, these language changes can also pose challenges to understanding and communication between different generations or in formal contexts.

The purpose of this study is to discover the role of Sociolinguistic and Sociopragmatic for primary school students in the developmental process of language learning by children. School-aged children find themselves in a developmental phase where they organize and integrate a variety of developmental skills to adapt to increasingly complex tasks, including language development. Language development is essentially a person's ability to communicate with their surroundings. Communication is used to build relationships with others in order for us to feel part of the environment. Language skills develop throughout the school year. Students are increasingly able to better understand and interpret spoken, written and body language communications, enabling them to understand the context and understand the people around them. Language development is related to cognitive development, meaning that intelligence factors and understanding of the environment around children greatly influence the development of their language skills. As children grow and develop, their language skills begin to develop from very basic to complex levels. Abstract

The Madurese language is slowly shifting because many young people prefer Indonesian, Arabic, or English in school and daily life. However, pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) still play an important role in keeping the Madurese language alive. This study examines how santri (students) at Pesantren Al-Hikam, Bangkalan maintain the Madurese language by looking at their opinions, challenges, and solutions. The research used a qualitative method with questionnaires (75 students) and interviews with six santri and two ustadzah (female religious teachers). The analysis was supported by theories of language attitude (Holmes, 2013), domains of use and language maintenance (Fishman, 1991; 1997), diglossia (Berger, 1990), and social networks (Milroy, 1992). Results show that santri are proud to use Madurese and see it as part of their identity. They use it in family, friendship, and religious settings, but face problems with polite speech levels like engghi bhunten (high speech level means yes-no), peer pressure, and the lower prestige of Madurese compared to other languages. To solve this, pesantren rules, peer support, and personal efforts help them keep using Madurese. The study shows that pesantren are not only for religion and education but also help protect local language and culture.
