Abstract

Synchronization between visual animation and music has been widely known as mickey-mousing. Notable old animation films have used this particular technique to reinforce action with a musical flourish and convey a certain meaning. Furthermore, animation music is commonly based on popular music, such as The Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 in Rhapsody Rabbit. The music is utilized not just as a scoring aspect but to dictate every Bugs Bunny's action when playing the piano. This research aims to study the implementation of the mickey-mousing technique in Rhapsody Rabbit film. It uses a qualitative content analysis approach to analyze visual and aural aspects”primary data is sourced from the Rhapsody Rabbit film and the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 music sheet. Secondary data is collected from literature studies related to the topic. Data collection is conducted through observation, interview, and documentation study. The data is analyzed using Klaus Krippendorf's content analysis technique which divided into six steps. The result of this study is that the mickey-mousing technique is implemented through a combination of a fast pace of visual and musical play altogether. Animation adapts to several parts of the musical composition so that articulation, illustration, and accentuation occur as a function of the mickey-mousing technique.

Abstract

Abstract

Film education in Indonesia, often prioritizing industry goals, forcing students to adapt to industry targets and serve the economic gains over artistic achievement. As Indonesian Film and Television Study Program Association (PROSFISI) stated, this industry-oriented view correlates to students who merely consume foreign film entertainment, causing them to become less active, creative, and connected to Indonesian culture and identity. An approach like this breeds a lack of critical thinking and a limited artistic imagination with montage as a contextual device. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that recreate montage in filmmaking education in Indonesia is an opportunity to renew freedom, cultural address, and critique. Through Practice-Led and Artistic Research, the research was conducted in the Film Study Program Bandung, analyzed the application of montage theories by Eisenstein, Pudovkin and Vertov, on student films. Findings suggest that narrative and symbolic montage facilitated deeper meaning around local topics and more straightforward and emotionally resonant narratives. Through a consideration of social-cultural issues the study shows the power of the montage as both an artistic and research tool. This study argues that the curriculum should approach film as a tool that promotes experimentation integrating montage and local culture to deepen student” understanding of film beyond its commodified nature.

Abstract

The research discussed Tembang Sunda Cianjuran (Cianjuran Sundanese Song) which contained a very high quality of music and was full of hidden wisdom values as a reflection of the people who created it. In a cross-generational context, transforming wisdom values was considered an educational process. The research used an anthropological approach to uncover the mystery behind the song’s structure and lyrics’ meaning and structuralism theory to interpret the meaning behind the structure. Data collection techniques were carried out by interviewing and studying archives of old documents in the form of audio recordings related to the Tembang Sunda Cianjuran, especially the genre of Papantunan (poetry-like). The collected data were identified, classified, then interpreted, and compiled qualitatively. The results illustrate that educational messages communicated through the lyrics of Papantunan as well as the process of transforming the values of past Sundanese’ lives into symbols, are carried out across generations. The substance of the values contained includes catur watak (four characters), which consists of education about courage (leber wawanen), faithful to promises (kukuh kana jangji), prioritizing the glory of life (medang kamulyan), and silih asih (giving each other the affection), silih asah (honing each other in intelligence or skills), and silih asuh (caring each other). All of this is packaged in the form of a pupuh poem and sung by a juru tembang accompanied by kacapi suling.

Abstract

Public Service Announcements (PSAs) represent a powerful medium for social communication, particularly in addressing complex issues such as mental health. However, limited research explores how students, as members of Generation Z, design PSAs within higher education frameworks that integrate global sustainability agendas. This study investigates how Project-Based Learning (PBL) enables students to conceptualize and produce PSAs on mental health in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using a qualitative participatory approach combined with visual content analysis, this study examines 33 PSAs produced by Communication and Film students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The findings reveal distinct disciplinary orientations in PSA design. Communication students prioritize clarity and directness through textual and verbal strategies, whereas Film students emphasize symbolic depth and aesthetic experimentation. Two representative PSAs, Nomophobia and They Just Want to Be Heard, are analyzed in detail to illustrate these differences. The analysis highlights contrasts in narrative structure, cinematography, and sound design across disciplines. The results demonstrate that Communication students ensure accessibility, while Film students enhance emotional resonance, suggesting complementary strengths. Overall, the study contributes to communication research by linking narrative and audiovisual strategies with PSA effectiveness. It also contributes to education by illustrating the role of PBL in fostering collaboration and critical awareness among students. Additionally, the findings support SDG-related scholarship by demonstrating how student-produced media advances mental health literacy as part of sustainable development.
