Abstract

This article intended to reveal the description of pre-Islamic women as far as the Qur’an is taken. This was done to provide a foundation of insight that how true Islam greatly elevates the dignity and status of women. Because the discussion in this paper links a theme that is in the Koran, the method used refers to the framework of the interpretation method maudhu’i (thematic). Operationally, in this article verses about pre-Islamic women was inventoried and then organized into several subthemes which all refer to the main theme, namely pre-Islamic women. The results of the discussion by thematizing the verse shows that: first, Islam highly upholds women and gives equal status to men. Second, Islam also gives women adequate and free space to play a role in the public sphere. Third, related to the situation of women in the pre-Islamic era to the extent recorded by the Koran shows that they were oppressed at that time. A number of their rights are not granted or reduced by the ignorance system which is in favor of only men. The culmination of the cruel behavior of the ignorance system towards women is their habit of being surly when their wives give birth to baby girls, even at the extreme level they are buried alive because they are considered disgrace.

Abstract

he problem is that not every religious believer is willing to live side by side with other people who are different. This phenomenon gives rise to clashes, hostility, and tensions between adherents of different religions. The main reason mostly refers to the interpretation with a narrow perspective on several religious texts, especially with the existence of verses that emphasize the exclusivity of eschatological happiness and the limitation of the right of exclusivity to certain groups. Through the contextual exegesis approach and the data analyzed by the thematic framework, this paper aims to present an idea of the response of the Quran to non-Islamic religions. The author also tries to interpret the verses of the Quran that show exclusivity and exclusive truth in a direction that is in accordance with other verses that call for tolerance and openness, starting with the contextual approach commonly used in the field of Quranic interpretation's studies today. The writer hopes that this paper will contribute academically to answer the stagnation of interpretation's phenomenon experienced by most religious communities in the modern era. Particularly, this contribution becomes an encouragement to build healthy relationships filled with love, compassion, to maintain humanity and respect for others, to safeguard rights, and to achieve shared human values and noble goals among others.

Abstract

This paper studies the Islamic ruwat tradition as a manifestation of the encounter between Islam and local culture in Java within the framework of the Islam Nusantara discourse. This study begins with a literature survey enriched with qualitative field research. Informants in this research are religious leaders as well as community leaders who have knowledge and experience about ruwatan. The data that has been collected is then analyzed qualitatively according to the research focus. The results of this study found that an ruwat islami tradition is a form of harmonization between Islamic teachings and Javanese culture that is still sustainable today. The practice of ruwat islami rituals requires various types of dishes (sajen) as a form of alms that contain symbolic meanings in the form of Islamic values, teachings/doctrines, and history. The meeting point between the two resulted in the ruwat islami tradition which is one of the heritage of the Islam Nusantara tradition.

Abstract

Sholeh Darat, born in the late 19th century, authored the Fayḍ al-Raḥmān interpretation, the first in Javanese in Indonesia. He was a respected kiai, teaching many kiai in Java. This article aims to uncover Sholeh Darat's conflict resolution method through his commentary and contributions in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive-analytical-historical approach, it reveals two significant conflict resolution strategies. Firstly, Sholeh Darat mediated conflicts between exoteric and esoteric interpreters. By incorporating both interpretations using the Sufi-ishari method, he reconciled differing viewpoints. Secondly, he resolved conflicts between sharia adherents (fuqaha) and followers of Islam Kejawen (essence). Employing sharia principles to reach mystical truths, he bridged the gap between these groups. These efforts significantly influenced Indonesia's religious landscape, particularly through his prominent students, KH. Ahmad Dahlan, founder of Muhammadiyah, and KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, founder of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Sholeh Darat's approach promoted religious harmony and cooperation, shaping Indonesia's religious tolerance ethos. Through his interpretations and teachings, he fostered understanding and unity among diverse religious perspectives, leaving a lasting impact on Indonesian society.

The result show that Discrimination can be overcome by instilling the teachings of the Islamic religion (caliphate principles) into oneself by accepting the nature of humans as social creatures who must live side by side with other humans who have different personalities and characteristics. At the elite level of thinking, we observe a pragmatic approach as elites gravitate toward populist figures to boost their popularity. Abstract

Religious proselytizing of Prophet Saw passed two periods: Mecca and Medina. In each period, the verses down monitor, guide and respond to what is happening in the reality. The verse that fell in the period Mecca is makiyyah, while the verse feel in the period Medina is madaniyyah. The verse makiyyah has characteristics that distinguish with the verses madaniyah. This characteristic confirms one thing: al-Qur’an attention and to a certain extent, to accommodate the peculiarities of the people who became the object of his khithâb. The study of makiyyah-madaniyyah from time to time it can be said not indicate any significant changes in term of approach or development insights. In other said, discussion about makiyyah-madaniyyah in the study of ulum al-Qur’an in general are still normative level. Whereas, essentially the concept of makiyyah-madaniyyah give opportunities for development and another approaches such as sociological and historical approach.

Abstract

This article addresses the ongoing debate of the reliability of the Qur'an as a historical source, focusing on the codification and stabilization of its text. This research examines several significant works by Mun'im Sirry that have contributed to Qur'anic scholarship while raising controversies, particularly among Southeast Asian scholars. Sirry’s critical approach situates his thoughts within the broader discourse of traditionalist and revisionist streams in Qur'anic studies. This study employs a qualitative library research method, cross-referencing Qur'anic scholarship to investigate Sirry's contributions. By comparing his thoughts with both traditionalist and revisionist views, the study aims to assess Sirry’s position and its impact on debates surrounding the historical authenticity of the Qur'an. The findings reveal that Sirry bridges the gap between the extreme skepticism of revisionists and the uncritical acceptance of traditionalists. His nuanced stance acknowledges both the textual evolution of the Qur'an and its historical significance. The study contributes to the ongoing debates on Qur'anic codification, revealing Sirry's role as a critical yet balanced scholar who navigates between these two extremes. His approach emphasizes the importance of historical-critical methods while also recognizing the roles of key figures, such as Abdul Malik and Hajjaj, in stabilizing the Qur'an’s text. Sirry’s position fosters a deeper understanding of the Qur'an’s role in Islamic history, offering a middle path that challenges both traditionalist and revisionist interpretations.
