Abstract

The Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (2014) stated that the problem of scarcity and unequal access to clean water in Indonesia is caused by increasing water demand, such as population growth, increased agricultural, industrial, mining, hotel activities, and the expansion of residential areas [1]. The clean water crisis and scarcity are also occurring in Tanjungbalai City. The President Director of PDAM Tirta Kualo invited the Director of UNESCO Asia Pacific, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, to conduct research on the crisis and poor water quality in Tanjungbalai City. One area of ​​Tanjungbalai City that is urgently affected by the scarcity and unequal access to clean water is the community of housewives in Perumnas Sijambi, Tanjungbalai City. The Perumnas Sijambi housewives social group became partners in this community service activity. These partners are customers of PDAM Tirta Kualo, whose service utilizes drilled well water as a source of clean water, although the water quality is not suitable for drinking. The main problems that are obstacles to the business of the Sijambi Housewives Group partners in Tanjung Balai City are 1) Production Aspects, because the income level of partners is still very low and the local PDAM has not fulfilled the provision of clean water to customers, resulting in the quality of water production; 2) Social Aspects of the Community, the Health Condition of the partners' drilled well water is in an unhealthy condition and is not suitable for drinking. The solution provided by the community service team to overcome the business obstacles mentioned above by designing and making a PILOT PROJECT of Appropriate Technology Tools (TTG) "SMART WELL WATER FILTER in the form of a DRILLED WELL WATER FILTER with a Green Building Concept, namely combining a Water Purification System from Natural Materials with a Paludarium that has Business Value. The tutorial on using the TTG Smart Well Water Filter Tool was carried out by the community service team to partners through several stages, namely: a) Coordination in the Preparation of Educational Socialization Activities in PKM Implementation Activities and Designing/Making the TTG Tool Pilot Project and Mentoring the TTG Smart Well Water Filter Tool Installation Workshop to Partners; b) Carrying out the activity "Mentoring the Installation Workshop for the Utilization of Appropriate Technology Smart Well Water Filter Tools in the Perumnas Sijambi Area, Tanjungbalai City"; c) Carrying out the activity "Socialization and Education on the Utilization of Appropriate Technology Through Smart Well Water Filters in the Perumnas Sijambi Area, Tanjungbalai City"; Sijambi Region, Tanjungbalai City"; d) Carrying out the Inauguration of the Smart Water Filter Appropriate Technology Tool for Borehole Wells, which was Inaugurated by the Head of Perumnas Sijambi with Partners and Local Community Members; e) Carrying out the activity of "Workshop and Education and Mentoring of Business Strategy for Housewives of Perumnas Sijambi in Marketing the Smart Water Filter Appropriate Technology Tool for Borehole Wells"; f) Carrying out the activity of "Workshop and Education and Mentoring Tutorial on Using the Smart Water Filter Tool for Borehole Wells to Get Healthy Water According to Permenkes No. 23 of 2023". The impact of the TTG Smart Water Filter Tool for partners is estimated to increase in: 1) Increasing the level of partner empowerment: Production Aspect (Increased Income) as evidenced by the increase in the quality of the partner's well water production to be healthy and drinkable will create business opportunities to increase the partner's household income by 5% with the existence of this appropriate technology tool that can be marketed/sold to the wider community; 2) Increasing the level of partner empowerment: Social Aspects (Health Improvement) as proven by the TTG Smart Well Water Filter Tool being able to improve the health quality of partner's well water. Based on laboratory tests after using the Smart Well Water Filter, iron levels returned to normal and the water was odorless and no longer brownish in color, in accordance with the standards of PERMENKES No. 2 of 2023 concerning drinking water quality requirements, namely with a Ph of 6.8.

Abstract

Riverbanks constitute an essential component of urban spatial systems, functioning as ecological buffers as well as spaces for community activities. In rapidly developing urban areas, riverbanks are often subjected to intense land-use pressure, which may lead to environmental degradation and increased hydrological vulnerability. This study aims to formulate strategies for the arrangement and restoration of the Bingai River riverbank based on existing conditions and the watershed (DAS) management policy framework. The research employs a descriptive approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, complemented by SWOT analysis as a strategic synthesis tool. Data were collected through field observations, documentation, questionnaires administered to communities living along the riverbank, and a review of secondary data and relevant policy documents. The results indicate that the existing conditions of the Bingai River riverbank are not yet fully aligned with watershed management and spatial planning policies, as reflected by settlement pressure, limited riparian vegetation, and suboptimal environmental infrastructure. The SWOT analysis generates strategic directions emphasizing the strengthening of riverbank ecological buffer functions, gradual control of riverbank land use, and the integration of riverbank arrangement with existing watershed management policies and programs. This study is expected to provide an initial reference for the contextual and applicable management of urban riverbanks.

Abstract

Water security has become an increasingly critical issue in rapidly growing urban regions such as Medan City, where population expansion, uneven infrastructure development, and localized contamination events continue to threaten the availability and quality of safe water. This study evaluates the effectiveness of three eco-friendly water treatment technologies—Bio Sand Filter (BSF), biochar-based filtration, and Constructed Wetland micro-systems (CW-micro)—as sustainable solutions for strengthening water security across household and community scales. Field testing, laboratory analysis, and Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) were employed to assess each technology's performance using microbiological, physicochemical, economic, and environmental indicators. Results show that the BSF achieved the highest MCA score (0.86), demonstrating superior microbial removal efficiency (up to 97%) and economic suitability for low-income households due to its low-cost materials and simple operation. The biochar filtration system recorded a score of 0.79 and demonstrated strong removal of metal contaminants, particularly Fe and Mn, making it well-suited for areas affected by industrial pollution or groundwater quality degradation. The CW-micro system achieved a score of 0.74 and performed effectively in reducing BOD and TSS, highlighting its potential for community-scale treatment and integration with urban green infrastructure. Overall, the findings indicate that nature-based filtration technologies offer a practical and sustainable pathway to improving Medan City's water quality while promoting environmental resilience, lowering treatment costs, and enhancing community self-reliance. The study concludes that these eco-friendly technologies should be incorporated into local water management strategies, supported by Perumda Tirtanadi policies, and monitored through long-term spatial water quality assessments to achieve a more water-secure and sustainable urban future

Abstract

This study evaluates the readiness of tourism infrastructure in Parapat as a supporting area for the optimization of the Waterfront City concept in the Lake Toba region. Parapat plays a strategic role as the main gateway and tourism transit hub for visitors accessing waterfront development in Samosir Island. A mixed-methods approach was employed, emphasizing descriptive quantitative analysis supported by qualitative SWOT analysis. Primary data were collected through questionnaires distributed to tourists, field observations, and documentation of existing conditions, while secondary data were obtained from official publications and tourism planning documents. The evaluation focused on the availability of supporting facilities and the quality of area services as key indicators of infrastructure readiness. The results indicate that Parapat’s tourism infrastructure is at a moderately adequate level, characterized by the presence of lakeside public spaces, pedestrian paths, and basic supporting facilities. However, several aspects, including area legibility, service consistency, public facility accessibility, and cleanliness management, still require improvement. The SWOT analysis reveals that Parapat has strong potential to function as an effective supporting area for the Waterfront City development, provided that service quality enhancement and integrated area management are strengthened. This study highlights the importance of supporting areas in ensuring sustainable and coherent tourism experiences within priority destinations.

Abstract

Ketersediaan air bersih yang memenuhi aspek kualitas dan mengefisiensikan biaya rumah tangga adalah tujuan dari setiap masyarakat untuk mendukung kesehatan dan pengurangan biaya rumah tangga. Masyarakat di Desa Klambir V Kebun, Kecamatan Hamparan Perak, masih menghadapi permasalahan kualitas air serta keterbatasan pengetahuan mengenai teknologi pengolahan air yang sederhana, murah, dan mudah diterapkan. Kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam memanfaatkan filter air alami guna meningkatkan kualitas air serta efisiensi biaya air minum rumah tangga. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi identifikasi permasalahan, penyuluhan, pelatihan pembuatan filter air menggunakan media alami berupa kerikil, pasir, arang aktif, dan ijuk, serta pendampingan penggunaan dan pemeliharaan filter. Pendekatan partisipatif ini diterapkan agar mitra masyarakat terlibat aktif dalam seluruh tahapan kegiatan. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman peserta mengenai pentingnya pengelolaan air bersih, kemampuan merancang dan membuat filter air sederhana secara mandiri, serta keterampilan dalam melakukan perawatan media filtrasi alami. Pemanfaatan filter air alami mampu meningkatkan kejernihan air dan mengurangi ketergantungan masyarakat terhadap pembelian air minum kemasan sehingga memberikan efisiensi pengeluaran rumah tangga. Program ini membuktikan bahwa edukasi dan pendampingan berbasis teknologi tepat guna dapat meningkatkan kapasitas masyarakat dalam pengelolaan air bersih secara mandiri dan mendukung keberlanjutan penyediaan air bersih di tingkat rumah tangga.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) in the implementation of the Land Consolidation program in Sitinjo Village, Sitinjo District, Dairi Regency. The research methodology uses a qualitative descriptive approach with the SWOT method based on the 2021 Land Consolidation Planning Technical Material document from the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Regional Office of North Sumatra Province. The results of the analysis show that the main strength factors are the potential for productive agricultural land and community support, while the main weakness is limited land accessibility. Opportunities stem from government policy support and the potential for community economic improvement, while threats include the risk of land conflicts and spatial planning changes. The recommended strategy is to optimize land access infrastructure and increase community participation in planning and implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze development planning issues and their impact on traffic congestion on Jalan Luku and Jalan Pintu Air, Kwala Bekala Village, Medan Johor District. Kwala Bekala Village is the second largest area with the highest population density, experiencing significant traffic congestion because it functions as a connecting route for settlements and the main access to tourist attractions (the Zoo). The main problems are spatial inconsistencies such as the conversion of road shoulders into illegal parking and street vendors (PKL), unplanned and overlapping infrastructure planning, and weak institutional controls that lead to violations of regional spatial planning. Traffic density causes congestion that disrupts time efficiency and road users. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through direct observation of traffic flow movements at certain hours at the study location. Data were analyzed using SWOT to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that can formulate strategies for handling congestion. The SWOT analysis results indicate that the main weaknesses lie in road narrowing and misuse of road shoulders, while the greatest threats are the growth rate of private vehicles, which is faster than infrastructure development, and weak law enforcement. This study identifies four main strategies that must be implemented to sustainably increase traffic capacity and smoothness: (1) Accelerating improvements in road capacity and conditions, (2) Developing comfortable and integrated mass transportation, (3) Enforcing regulation of road shoulder misuse.
