Abstract

Background: During this pandemic, hospitals, as healthcare providers, play a central role in generating the largest amount of Covid-19 waste compared to other healthcare facilities, especially when the hospital is designated as a Covid-19 referral hospital. This study was conducted to analyze the management of Covid-19 waste at the RSKD Duren Sawit, focusing on the stages of waste management, waste characteristics, facilities and infrastructure, as well as administrative aspects involved in Covid-19 waste management at RSKD Duren Sawit. Methods: This research was carried out using a qualitative study design to gain an in-depth understanding of Covid-19 waste management at the Special Regional Hospital (RSKD) Duren Sawit. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with informants, consisting of key informants, primary informants, and additional informants. A total of four respondents were selected based on specific criteria relevant to the research topic. These interviews aimed to explore various perspectives and experiences related to the procedures and challenges of medical waste management during the pandemic, to obtain comprehensive information on the implementation of policies and practices in waste management at RSKD Duren Sawit. Results: The findings of this study indicate that Covid-19 waste management at RSKD Duren Sawit consists of disinfection, packaging, waste delivery to the Temporary Hazardous Waste Management Facility, weighing, transportation by a licensed transporter, and eventual incineration by a third party with appropriate permits. The Covid-19 waste includes food and beverage waste from patients, infectious waste from medical procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) used by staff, and other items contaminated with the Covid-19 virus. Conclusion: The facilities and infrastructure for waste management at RSKD Duren Sawit need further enhancement; however, overall, they do not hinder the Covid-19 waste management process. The Covid-19 waste management process at RSKD Duren Sawit is in accordance with regulations, although there are still challenges encountered on the ground. Additionally, there is a need for hospital policies related to Covid-19 waste management to ensure that the implementation of waste management at RSKD Duren Sawit can be carried out more efficiently. Abstract

The low awareness of small food traders regarding food safety is a health problem in Indonesia. There is still widespread use of dangerous preservatives like borax and formaldehyde, which are not meant for food. It is crucial for the community to play a role in monitoring the presence of these preservatives in food. However, conducting laboratory tests requires a significant amount of money. Thus, the objective of this community service is to educate the public about the harmful chemicals used as food preservatives and teach them how to create simple detection tools for borax and formaldehyde using inexpensive and easily accessible materials. Turmeric and a formalin testing kit are among the materials used. The food samples that were analyzed during this activity included gendar crackers, meatballs, salted fish, salted squid, white tofu, yellow tofu, and wet noodles. As a result of this service, the public becomes informed about the dangerous chemicals still being used as preservatives and gains the ability to identify borax and formaldehyde in food using natural indicators.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The issue of solid medical waste management in hospitals remains a serious challenge that can endanger environmental health and increase the risk of disease transmission. In several healthcare facilities, including Zahirah General Hospital, improper medical waste segregation practices are still found, such as the mixing of medical and non-medical waste. This condition indicates a weakness in healthcare workers' behavior towards safe and proper waste management. This study aims to examine the relationship between knowledge, years of service, and attitudes toward solid medical waste segregation behavior among nurses at Zahirah General Hospital. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design conducted from October to December 2024. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to nurses at Zahirah General Hospital, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. The results showed no significant relationship between knowledge and segregation behavior (p = 0.412), nor between years of service and behavior (p = 0.200). However, there was a significant relationship between attitude and behavior (p = 0.030; OR = 2.681). These findings indicate that nurses' attitudes play a key role in the effectiveness of medical waste segregation. This study highlights the importance of ongoing education and training programs on medical waste management for all hospital staff to increase awareness, responsibility, and engagement in proper waste segregation practices. These efforts are essential to support a safe and healthy hospital environment.
