Abstract

Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are increasingly deployed for hydrographic survey, coastal observation, and unmanned maritime monitoring. Although autonomous waypoint navigation enables an ASV to execute predefined missions, shore-side operators still require a supervision mechanism that can interpret navigation telemetry, identify route deviation tendencies, and provide timely operational alerts. This paper proposes a VTS-oriented route deviation monitoring framework for ASVs using waypoint-tracking telemetry and navigation alert classification. The proposed framework utilizes mission waypoints, actual GPS position, heading, speed, mission status, and communication streams to evaluate whether the vessel remains consistent with its planned navigation task. Instead of focusing on onboard control performance, the framework transforms waypoint error, heading deviation, and telemetry status into operator-oriented alert levels, namely normal, caution, warning, and danger. The framework is developed using datasets and system components from a catamaran-type ASV testbed supported by autonomous waypoint navigation, web-based telemetry transmission, and onboard logging infrastructure. The available navigation dataset consists of ten simulation trials and ten real-world trials, with baseline results showing a mean waypoint error of 0.49 m and mean heading error of 4.21° in simulation, and a mean waypoint error of 1.15 m and mean heading error of 10.8° under real-world operation. The monitoring infrastructure further supports real-time supervision through web-based telemetry and low-latency data transmission, with previous testing reporting a GPS positional error of 3.66 m, data fetch time of 199 ms, and data transmission time of 165 ms. In addition, mission logging data demonstrated a 618.0 s operational record with 100.0% file completeness and 99.81% multi-sensor continuity. These results indicate that the developed ASV testbed provides sufficient telemetry readiness for route deviation monitoring and shore-side navigation alert generation. Unlike previous studies that focus on waypoint control, communication performance, or onboard collision avoidance, this study positions route deviation monitoring as a VTS-relevant safety supervision layer for small and medium ASVs operating in restricted and coastal waters.

Abstract

Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) require reliable encounter assessment to support remote supervision in restricted and coastal waters. This paper proposes a shore-side collision-risk surveillance approach based on Closest Point of Approach (CPA) and Time to Closest Point of Approach (TCPA). The proposed framework combines own-ship telemetry, target-track data, relative-motion estimates, and communication status to produce a four-tier alert status for the monitoring operator. Evaluation used records from waypoint navigation, dynamic obstacle trials, web-based telemetry, and fail-safe testing. Simulation and field navigation produced mean waypoint errors of 0.49 and 1.15 m and mean heading errors of 4.21° and 10.8°, respectively. Ten dynamic obstacle trials achieved 100.0% avoidance success and mission recovery, with a mean activation delay of 0.004 s, observation-to-maneuver time of 0.881 s, and avoidance duration of 54.184 s. The communication infrastructure reported a GPS error of 3.66 m, data-fetch time of 199 ms, transmission time of 165 ms, and end-to-end monitoring latency below 250 ms. The combined records demonstrate adequate data readiness for encounter surveillance, while full CPA/TCPA validation still requires continuous target trajectories. The resulting approach supports remote situational awareness without changing the existing vehicle-control architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

Energy consumption in educational buildings has become an important issue in efforts to improve energy efficiency and support sustainability. The building sector accounts for more than 30% of global energy consumption, with lighting and air-conditioning systems being among the major contributors. This study proposes an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Classroom system integrated with fuzzy logic to improve energy efficiency. The system utilizes PIR/mmWave sensors to detect human presence, a BH1750 sensor to measure light intensity, and a DHT22 sensor to measure temperature and humidity. An ESP32 microcontroller is used to process sensor data and communicate with the ThingsBoard platform to support real-time monitoring and control of the devices. Fuzzy logic is implemented as an adaptive decision-making mechanism to control the lighting system and an air purifier as a prototype of a cooling device based on environmental conditions and human presence. The experimental results show that the developed system is capable of automatically controlling the lighting system and the prototype cooling device according to environmental conditions and human presence. Based on the estimated energy consumption, the lighting system reduced its energy consumption from 0.14 kWh/day to 0.043351 kWh/day, resulting in an estimated energy efficiency of 69.04%. Meanwhile, the energy consumption of the air purifier decreased from 0.28 kWh/day to 0.16 kWh/day, resulting in an estimated energy efficiency of 42.86%. Overall, the energy consumption of both devices decreased from 0.42 kWh/day to 0.203351 kWh/day, resulting in an estimated total energy efficiency of 51.58%. These results indicate that the implementation of IoT and fuzzy logic has the potential to improve energy efficiency in classrooms through adaptive device control based on environmental conditions and human presence.
