Abstract

This study aimed at analysing cultural relations in Black Panther movie with main purposes are to 1) find the kinds of cultural relations in Black Panther movie, and 2) find the realization of cultural relations in Black Panther movie. The study used qualitative research method. For collecting the data, the study used Black Panther movie script. The study analyzed the situation and dialogue in the movie using the theory of cultural relations’ types by Iriye (2002) and cultural elements by Barkan (2012. The study found that both types of cultural relations by Iriye exist in the movie, they are direct cultural interaction and indirect cultural interaction. Direct cultural interactions denote physical encounters with people and objects of another culture. Besides, indirect cultural interaction involves ideas, values, and beliefs proper to a specific culture and often featured in philosophy, literature, music, and art that are acting as cross-national tools, which can foster and strengthen intercultural dialogue. The researchers hoped the readers can understand more about cultural relations and change their mind become more critical when they are facing the problems in society related to cultures.

Abstract

The paper aimed at finding out the significant different between the students’ writing skill taught with and without using PLEASE strategy. The researchers used quasi-experimental research with two groups. The population of the research was the tenth grade students of SMKN Jenawi. The researchers took two classes as experimental class and control class. The researchers gave post-test only for each class and the treatment to the experimental class. To collect the data, the researchers used essay test. The mean of the post-test in experimental class was 83.5 and the mean of the post-test of control class was 62.3. Then the result was calculated quantitatively using SPSS. It showed that there were any significant difference. The researchers concluded that PLEASE strategy can improve students writing descriptive text. Eventually, pedagogical implication of the research, hopefully, can be used as a supplementary reference with different discussion.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out as well as identify the acronym and abbreviations in IJAL Journal, Vol. 7 no. 3 and Vol 8 no. 1. This research used qualitative research design. The data in this research were 50 articles taken from IJAL Journal Vol. 7 No. 3 and Vol. 8 No. 1. It was found 35 of acronyms and 131 abbreviations. The findings of the acronyms did not happen any other types but the abbreviations did. There are 109 initialism abbreviations and 26 shortening abbreviations. It was considered that an acronym and abbreviation are similar but also has differences. Abbreviations are not pronounced like a word, yet they are spelled like pronouncing a letter. The function of acronym and abbreviation used in article are to minimize the space which was provided to explain the paper to the readers, also, for the same sentences are not allowed to be repeated in writing an article. Therefore, at the end of this research, it is suggested to the English learners, they should pay attention about the kinds of acronym and abbreviations, especially for them who want to learn about word formation.
