Abstract

Abstract Referring to the latest curriculum, School-Based Curriculum, every English textbook should provide genres based on the level of literacy of each grade. On this paper, I analyzed English textbooks published by Erlangga – English on Sky (EOS), and by Pakar Raya -- Let’s Talk. This paper focuses on how are the reading passages of the textbooks compatible with “Standard Isi”?. Coinciding with the statement of the problems, the objectives of this paper are to describe the generic structures of the texts, the types of text, linguistic features, social purposes, and then their compatibility to “Standar Isi”. There are some crucial problems found such; the types of text provided in EOS were Descriptive (80%) and Procedure (20%), whereas in Let’s Talk were Descriptive (57.2%) and Procedure (42.8%). Looking at the percentage of both text types, I found a crucial problem in EOS on some texts and in applying simple continuous tense in descriptive text. To sum up the result, I conclude that Let’s Talk is more compatible than EOS. Keywords: Genre, text, social purpose, generic structure, linguistic features, School-Based Curriculum (KTSP), English textbook, communicative competence, “Standar Isi”.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out teachers’ perception, knowledge and behaviour of HOTS in 2013 curriculum and finding out learning model mostly applied by the teachers. It is a descriptive qualitative study which involves 12 English teachers of SMAN 10, SMAN 12, SMAN 14, SMAN 15, and SMAN 8 of Semarang as the participants. Observation checklist, questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to obtain the data. The result showed that the teachers’ perception, knowledge and behaviour is very good (5%), good (85%), and enough (10%). Therefore, it is not enough to have this level of perception, knowledge and behaviour to achieve the 21st century skills. Problem based learning (70%) is the most used learning models among other (each 10%). It relates to teachers’ perception that problem based learning suits learning English language where problem comes first then the students find out the answer/solution. That is the reason why not all of learning models can be easily applied in the classroom. The urgency of conducting HOTS workshop is very high. The time allotment used in applying every learning model need to be reconsidered by the government.

Abstract

To enhance students’ ability in listening skill, the lecturer needs to understand what problems faced by their students. Since listening is still a big issue for English learners in Indonesia, so the processing of Top Down and Bottom Up need to be figured out. Top-Down processing refers to the use of schemata or knowledge of learners to understand the information received, while the Bottom-Up processing refers to the process of understanding the information through the analysis of sound, sense of the word, and grammar. This study wanted to investigate what problems do students have in learning listening since the observation result showed that students’ listening grade is low. A case study research design was applied in this study. Thirty students of first semester of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year 2015/2016 became the sample of this study. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result showed that 90% of the students found that Bottom Up processing is more problematic than Top Down processing (10%). The interview result showed that 44% students have difficulty in vocabulary and 56% in pronunciation. Those problems make them difficult to catch what the speaker says. It leads to another problems that is Top Down processing which needs Bottom Up as the basic competence. Therefore, it suggests to lecturer that Bottom Up, which involved vocabulary and pronunciation, is matters for students to achieve the listening competence well.

Abstract

This study investigated the curiosity of how an eminent senior high teacher handled the communication in EFL classroom when he has problems in expressing ideas during the learning process where English is unlikely to be spoken than Javanese. It examined two repair strategies; repetition and self-initiated repair since these two are prominent features of daily communication mostly in the setting of English as a foreign language. It was a classroom discourse analysis study which used a descriptive qualitative approach. Numbers used in the form of percentage to support the findings. The participant of this study was an eminent teacher of a private senior high in Semarang. The learning session was video recorded then was carefully transcribed. Then, the repair strategies of the teacher’s talk were analyzed through the study. The findings revealed that self-initiated repair was used less frequently than repetition. There were 45 out of 210 utterances done for repetition (13.81%) and 16 out of 210 utterances done for self-initiated (7.61%). It was also found the combination of those two repair strategies in one utterance. The findings indicate that the effort of the teacher to build English speaking classroom atmosphere is very high even though the students were lack of motivation in speaking English. Yet, the teacher shows the repair strategy mostly in the beginning of the learning session, but he finally made it through the rest of the session. The findings may inspire those of many other English teachers, especially in Indonesia, in giving positive contribution in building EFL classroom.
