Abstract

Culture has an important role in realizing sustainable education. An Ethnochemistry-based Culturally Responsive Teaching Approach has the potential to integrate students' cultural and chemical concepts into classroom learning. However, this approach has not been widely implemented in schools. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of implementing an tthnochemistry-based culturally responsive teaching approach on improving cognitive learning outcomes in green chemistry material in high school. A quasi-experimental design involving 36 students in the experimental class and 36 students in the control class was used, utilizing a post-test with ten multiple choice questions to measure cognitive learning outcomes. The Kruskal-Wallis test was then applied to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. The research results show that the application of the Culturally Responsive Teaching approach which is integrated with ethnochemistry has an effect on increasing cognitive learning outcomes in green chemistry material.

Abstract

This study investigates the structural and photocatalytic roles of Ni and Zn dopants in mesoporous silica–Cu catalysts for methylene blue degradation under light irradiation. The materials were synthesized and systematically characterized using FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM–EDS, and UV–DRS to elucidate dopant-dependent structural, textural, and electronic modifications. XRD analysis revealed that Zn doping enhances crystallinity to 90.80% with a crystallite size of 1.97 nm, whereas Ni doping produces lower crystallinity (80.69%) and smaller crystallites (1.82 nm), indicating defect-rich microstructures. BET analysis confirmed mesoporous characteristics in both systems, with Zn incorporation generating broader pore distributions and higher adsorption capacity, while Ni induces more confined pore structures. SEM results showed average particle sizes of 1.49 nm for Zn-doped and 1.67 nm for Ni-doped catalysts. UV–DRS measurements demonstrated pronounced electronic modulation, with Ni doping significantly narrowing the band gap to 1.02–1.11 eV compared with 2.08–2.78 eV for Zn-doped materials. Photocatalytic evaluation at an initial methylene blue concentration of 5 ppm showed superior performance for the Ni-doped catalyst, achieving 79.59% removal efficiency and an adsorption capacity of 19.89 mg.g⁻¹, compared with 50.98% removal and 12.74 mg.g⁻¹ for the Zn-doped system. Kinetic analysis followed pseudo-first-order behavior, with a higher rate constant for Ni doping (0.01675 min⁻¹) than Zn doping (0.00706 min⁻¹). These findings demonstrate that Ni primarily enhances photocatalytic activity through electronic defect formation and band gap narrowing, while Zn mainly improves structural ordering and pore accessibility. The study highlights the critical role of dopant selection in tailoring structure–activity relationships in mesoporous silica–Cu photocatalysts. Abstract

This study explores the development of nanostructured photocatalytic materials based on cobalt–iron (CoFe1-2) and cobalt–nickel (CoNi1-1) systems for the degradation of methylene blue, a persistent organic pollutant commonly found in textile wastewater. As the textile industry contributes significantly to environmental pollution through the discharge of recalcitrant dyes, this work aims to offer an effective and sustainable solution via visible-light-driven photocatalysis. The synthesis strategy employed a hard-template approach using mesoporous silica-gelatin composite (SPG-20), prepared from a mixture of P123 and gelatin under acidic conditions. Following hydrothermal treatment and calcination, the SPG-20 template was acid-activated to enhance surface reactivity. Metal precursors—Co(NO₃)₂.6H₂O with either Fe(NO₃)₃.9H₂O or Ni(NO₃)₂.6H₂O—were infiltrated into the template with citric acid as a chelating and carbon-forming agent. The composite underwent controlled thermal treatment to embed metal species into a confined carbon matrix, followed by alkaline etching to remove the silica scaffold and yield CoFe1-2 and CoNi1-1 carbon nanostructures. Comprehensive characterizations, including XRD, FTIR, BET, UV-DRS, and UV–VIS spectroscopy, revealed that the materials exhibited nanocrystalline domains with low crystallinity and high specific surface area, favorable for photocatalytic activity. BET analysis indicated a greater surface area in CoFe1-2 (104.526 m²/g) than in CoNi1-1 (83.160 m²/g), correlating with a higher number of available active sites. The band gap of CoFe1-2 (1.180 eV) supports efficient visible-light absorption, which, coupled with its higher microporosity, enables superior methylene blue degradation (85% within 90 minutes) compared to CoNi1-1 (75%). Control experiments in the absence of light showed minimal degradation, confirming that the reaction is photocatalytic in nature. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-first-order model, with CoFe1-2 also exhibiting a higher adsorption capacity (171.184 mg/g). These findings demonstrate the potential of template-assisted synthesis in producing tunable, high-performance photocatalysts for practical applications in sustainable textile wastewater treatment. Abstract

This study aims to develop a photocatalyst combination of NiO, CuO and ZnO metal oxides modified with mesoporous silica gelatin (mSG) to overcome methylene blue (MB) dye waste through photodegradation process. The photocatalysts were synthesized using the hard template method with mSG as the matrix and tested for their performance towards MB degradation under ultraviolet light. Characterization results showed that the G-Ni-Cu-Zn photocatalyst has a larger surface area, better crystalline structure, nano particle size (~26 nm), and band gap energy of 3.16 eV compared to G-Ni-Zn which has a very low surface area, larger particle morphology (~0.46 μm), and band gap energy of 2.13 eV. Photodegradation tests showed a maximum degradation efficiency of 83.67% by G-Ni-Cu-Zn in 120 minutes, which is much higher than that of G-Ni-Zn. Abstract

Optimization and Ibuprofen Kinetical Adsorption Study of Silica from Lapindo Mud (SLM) by Sol-gel Method. This study successfully applied silica synthesized from Lapindo mud by sol-gel method using P123-white egg as an adsorbent for reducing ibuprofen. An initial concentration, adsorbent weight, pH, and temperature were applied to optimize the main experimental reaction conditions using batch methods. This optimization was based on maximizing ibuprofen removal of the silica from lapindo mud samples. The results show that the two most relevant parameters for ibuprofen adsorption are the adsorption temperature and adsorbent dosage. According to the Kinetics model, the optimum condition for the maximum ibuprofen adsorption was determined during 60 min at ibuprofen concentration of 100 mg/L at 45±0.5 °C (pH 5) with catalyst dosage of 0.03 g, resulting in 94.88, 96.04, 95.57, and 96.65% ibuprofen removal, respectively. The kinetics of the ibuprofen adsorption was also evaluated, and the experimental results were well described using a pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order model. The kinetic studies using linear regression analysis revealed that the adsorption fits pseudo-second-order kinetic with the value of the activation energy of 0.441 kJ/mol and the pre-exponential factor of 1.21 L2‧mol-2‧min-1, confirming that the silica from Lapindo mud is a good alternative for removal ibuprofen through adsorption.
